My girlfriend who makes T-shirt quilts as a side job backs the shirts with the lightest weight non-woven fusible interfacing she can find. This is just to stabilize the knit shirts so that they don't stretch as she sews the quilt together.

It's entirely up to you to determine the size of the squares. Perhaps the best thing would be to see what you have and then figure out the size of the squares based on how a big of a quilt you want to make.

I've made several t-shirt quilts. Yes, you do need to back the streachy t-shirts. I use a light-weight fusible interface. You can get it at stores like Joann's.

Cut the back of the shirt from the front by cutting up the sides of the shirt and across the shoulders. Iron the fusible to the wrong side of the part of the shirt with the logo. Some logos are on the front, some on the back.

I put the logo face down on the ironing board, place the interfacing on top (be sure the fusible side of the interfacing is down). Place a teflon pressing sheet over the fusible web and press. Do not let the iron touch the logo as many will melt. I cut the interfacing a couple inches larger than needed so I can square up easier.

Once fused, cut out the t-shirt logo to whatever size you want. I'd measure the largest logo and cut the rest to that size, centering the logos within that dimension. My first quilt blocks were 12 1/2". My next one contained all different size blocks from 3" - 9". I've also fused interfacing to the unused side of the t-shirt, cut strips and used it to enlarge smaller blocks.

I made one of these for my daughter last year using her old high school & college t-shirts, I think maybe about 25-30 t-shirts were used.

The width of the t-shirt logos is what I used to determine the width of the columns, some logos were wider than others, so I used the width of the widest one.

I ended up using some lightweight denim as sashing between the t-shirts, just to break it up a little, as the t-shirts tended to be too much visually without a break. I fused the t-shirts onto a lightweight muslin to stabilize the knit material, it worked out fine.

Interesting thread. I have been approched to make one but have been reluctant to try. One of my questions is how is it quilted and what type of batting is used. I liked the one that you made Sue. Nice choice of colors. Jayne

I've got a question about quilting a T shirt quilt. Do you quilt over the logos? I know some of them are that rubbery kind of stuff & I figure it may gunk up your needle.

My tee-shirt quilt top has been sent to my longarm quilter since this picture was taken. She did an all-over pattern called Mozart, which is musical notes and G cleffs to go along with the music theme of most of the shirts.
I backed all the shirts with lightweight interfacing. Figuring out the red sashing was the most challenging part of the whole project.
All I have to do is the binding and I'll be done with this one. Slowly getting through all my UFOs.

I do quilt the t-shirt material but I avoid the puffy parts if there are any blocks like that. I quilt close to the puff but not on it. I have a longarm and only do freehand quilting so it's easy for me. A longarmer who uses a panto, like the musical one above, would not be able to avoid it as easily. I don't think it would hurt the machine or needle. I just didn't want to punch down the puffy stuff.
