Use baking soda, peroxide and shampoo..... sponge it on,let it soak if you can. It's really hard to get rid of but keep drenching his face and it will neutralize.

I don't have any peroxide. I had some apple vinegar and I poured the entire bottle on him trying to avoid his eyes but that is where he got sprayed. I then doused him in baking soda and water then rinsed with a bucket of water, then shampoo then another bucket of warm water, then cream rinse and another bucket of water. He doesn't know what hit him. Poor dog.

My living room smells of skunk. I put his bed outside because when he came in he rubbed his head on it. I don't have any deoderizer so just put out a bowl of vinegar. I don't even have white vinegar in the house.

I will leave him outside for as long as I can until it rains so he can dry off a bit. LOL Now I have to think about deskunking myself. ooowwweeeee.

I don't think I will be getting any sleep tonight and I am sooo tired.

I am mad at myself for letting him go out back. Usually I put him out front for his last pee.

I think I will bring him out some water because he got sprayed in the face. He is not a happy camper.

Well Anne I went thru this exact scenario about 2.5 months ago with my Ben. Out for his nightly pee and into the house before we caught wind of it. Plus it was freezing out so he could go out and had to stay in the laundry room but by then he'd already gone thru the livingroom etc. I shampooed him best I could with dog shampoo, little help but some and then the next day got some De-skunk spray at PetSmart..only helped a little. In the meantime I was going crazy Febreezing the livingroom furniture, curtains, every piece of furniture in the house and putting down that Arm & Hammer carpet stuff too. I don't know what smelled worse.. I guess the combo of all those smells plus skunk. It's taken almost all this time 2 plus months to get 99% of the smell out of the house it was that bad. Oh I got some of that Natures Miracle stuff at PetSmart as well and it worked not too bad..get some right away, big bottle and use it straight. You'll have to pour it on a facecloth and wipe to do the dogs face. Then it has to stay on the dog for about 10 minutes before you can shampoo it out.

I just had to bring him because it is now starting to rain. I took the cover off his bed and brought the bed back in and put a sheet over it.

LOL I did the same thing and Febreezed everything and sprayed some Rose body spray I had. What a mixture of smells - yuck. I don't have carpets thank goodness.

The smell is strong and has an oniony odour to it. My cats are going crazy.

I am sorry you had to go through with this with Ben. I have had dogs for over 40 years and never have they been sprayed by skunk.

I am sitting on my footstool typing this because I don't want to contaminate my couch. I wore my pjs to wash Loki and now I have to toss them. I hope I don't smell like skunk but I am sure I do.

I just wish I didn't have to taste it. I closed the door to the bedroom but I had turned the furnace on earlier to get the chill out and now the smell has spread into the rest of the house.

LOL I just took a look around my house. All my kitchen cupboards are opened because I was looking for peroxide and vinegar and the baking soda. Everything is out of the bathroom cabinet because I was looking for stuff and I dumped stuff on the landing that was in the 2 pails I used. Stuff is falling out of the linen closet because I tore through it looking for old towels and face cloths and room spray which I didn't find.

At least I can laugh about it. Oh boy. I don't wish this on my worse enemy. Well, maybe I do. LOLOL

Anne, I used to work in a pet food store, and some customers had some success using coca cola. It went a long way to neutralize the smell.

If my dogs want out late at night they are usually up to no good. It's usually to chase a possem, armadillo or the neighbors cat. I'd rather clean up a doggie poop than risk a "skunk spray".

When the dogs want out so very "desperately" at night, we shine a flash light outside to see what is stirring before we let them out.

Waaaa, poor me is right! LOL What a night. I think I got an hour of sleep.

My bedroom had the highest concentration of the smell. Loki didn't go in there and I closed the door right away. I think it is because the skunk sprayed him on the bedroom corner of my house. I opened the window but I think that made it worse. I closed it and then opened it this morning. I kept the animals out of my room while I tried to sleep.

I think my nose is numb to the smell, I can't tell how bad it is or how Loki smells but I mostly smell the cedar chips in his bed. I had to toss the cover to the bed out when he rubbed his head on it after he got sprayed.

My brother just got a new van and there is no way he is going to take me way out to Pet Smart to get the stuff I need or anywhere else for that matter.

Will Oust help neutralize the smell in the house?

It only sprinkled last night but now the skies look like it is going to start raining heavy. Loki is outside right now until it does. Loki's fur smells like skunk, sour vinegar and apple shampoo.

I wonder how long I am going to be wearing "eau de Peppi le peu" Not a scent I really like. Gaaaa.

Take him to the vet!!!!! Skunk spray can cause him to lose his eyesight. The vet can give you drops to prevent that. When that happened to Bandit, the vet had super stuff to take away the smell. Good luck--I know from experience what you are going through.

I would call a groomer he might help you

DeSkunk Formulaâ¦..Easy, Effective, Low Cost

1 quart (32 oz.) hydrogen peroxide
1 quart warm water
3 tablespoons Dawn Dish soap (DAWN is best; it breaks down oil; skunk scent is oily.)
ý box of baking soda

Mix all these ingredients in a small pail. Work the solution into the dogâÂÂs hair and let it stand for 15-20 minutes. Use a rag or sponge and keep patting the solution into the hair to get it thoroughly soaked. Keep sponging him with the solution while youâÂÂre timing it. DonâÂÂt get it in his eyes or mouth.

Rinse the dog very well and towel dry. Repeat if necessary, depending on how much spray actually got on him. Use old towels to dry him. The peroxide may lighten his hair, especially if heâÂÂs in the sun a lot.

This solution works very effectively. WeâÂÂve used it four times on Harry! He was able to come in the house right after being washed and dried off.

When I tell people my dog has been âÂÂskunkedâ they usually tell me to âÂÂbathe him in tomato juice.â IâÂÂve asked several people if theyâÂÂve actually bathed a skunked dog in tomato juice, and did it remove the odor? The answers have always been, âÂÂNo; but IâÂÂve heard itâÂÂs good.â IâÂÂve also asked folks if they know anyone that has successfully removed skunk odor with tomato juice. I get more, âÂÂNo, not personally.â If you ever hear of a real, live, tomato-cleaned dog, let me know!

We keep a couple of âÂÂskunk kitsâ made up. We store two 16-ounce bottles of peroxide, a small bottle of Dawn, old cleaning rags, and a box of baking soda in an ice cream bucket. Open the ingredients, pour them in the bucket, add a quart of water and youâÂÂre in business! Wes keeps one kit at home and one in the truck.

Thanks Caroline. I will have to make up a kit just in case there is a next time which I hope there won't be. LOL I had everything but the Hydrogen Peroxide last night. I usually keep it on hand because if Loki eats something he shouldn't I give him some of that to make him throw up whatever he ate. I need to replace the empty bottle.

After talking to Heather on the phone I called my vet and he said not to worry about Loki's eyes and I did the right thing by rinsing them with cool water. He said the skunk spray may irritate his eyes but won't make him go blind.

I was outside brushing Loki to remove any dead fur and Paul showed up after his Dr's appointment. LOL He asked if I had my shower yet and I told him I had 5 showers since this happened. I wanted him to take me to Pet Smart way across town but he took me to the Pet store a few streets over instead where I buy my dog food.

I asked if they had Nature's Miracle and they told me to try this other stuff instead because they feel it works better. This product is called Nok Out and can be used on every type of odour to remove it. I had never heard of either product so I decided to try the knock out and if it doesn't work will go back for Nature's Miracle like PK suggested.

I sprayed Loki down and massaged it onto his skin, I sprayed his bed, furniture and curtains and the throw rugs and then I sprayed all the rooms in the house. I The label said ot take odours out of a room to put some in a cool vaporizer or humidifier with some water and keep it going for 4 hours. I just put some in a bowl and put it on the mantle to see if it works.

LOL I noticed when I was in the pet store I could smell the skunk especially when I opened my purse. I sprayed that too when I got home. My eyes are stinging a bit but I can live with it.

Raining now and I don't want to close my windows. LOL

I also bought Loki a new collar since his took a direct hit and a new lead that matches. I like it because it is reflective and we do a lot of walking at night.

I am going to relax a bit and make myself a pot of coffee and have my breakfast/lunch and then maybe take a nap. I am exhausted. LOL

Hi, I have an American Eskimo and am dreading the day my guy gets skunked and I know it will happen! I am going to paste in the instructions I copied from another pet forum some time ago - which are basically the same as Caroline's. Except one thing, I know that my guy's groomer has had great luck with adding REGULAR Tooth Paste to the mix - on its own though and then doing the Peroxide business. Tomato juice sure doesn't work. Was very happy to note that you had tossed the collar and lead that were sprayed. So many people have taken their pets to our groomer, but have forgotten that the collar was sprayed too. I, too worry about the eyes being sprayed - and should my Eskie get sprayed by the skunk that lives behind the neighbour's shed, I really hope that the Groomer or the Vet is open - an Eskie would not be a pretty thing to have to de-skunk. What follows is what I have saved in my Advice file. (Now if only my husband WOULD STOP OPENING THE PEROIXDE - HE DOESN'T SEEM TO BELIEVE ME THAT IT WILL TURN TO WATER AND BE INEFFECTIVE WHEN THE WORST HAPPENS!.

Ingredients:
1 quart (or liter) of never opened 3% Hydrogen Peroxide available in most drug stores.
1/4 cup (50 ml.) of Baking Soda
1 teaspoon (5 ml.) of liquid dish soap

Using a pair of rubber gloves mix the ingredients together IN AN OPEN container like a bucket and watch it get fizz up. Try to see where your pet got hit and rub the mixture well into the fur while avoiding the eyes, and other sensitive parts like the nose and mouth. Let it stay on for 5 minutes or longer if the smell keeps lingering. Rinse extra well. This usually works well once but you may need to do this twice if your pet took a particularly nasty spraying. The solution will not change the colour of your pet's fur. DO NOT STORE or REUSE MIXTURE as it will build up pressure in a closed container and possibly explode. Dump it all after using it once.

If after your best attempts at bathing and cleaning your pet is still very uncomfortable, especially regarding its eyes (red, watery) then a trip to the vets is a must.

Remember if you have skunks in your area, try moth balls --BUT KEEP them away from dogs/cats/kids. Where my DD lives, I put them under the sheds, where the other animals don't go and even hung them up in a wood shed, inside a homemade bag HIGH where the dog could not reach. I also sprayed the area with kitchen cleaning spray --don't know which worked, but skunk left. Maybe he/she got tired of the noise I was making putting all the stuff around.

The skunk was out again last night because while I was sleeping I could smell it. We have always had skunks around here but I have never actually seen one, only have smelled it.

I don't have anything in my backyard that would attract skunks unless it is the composter. I have a plastic composter that sits in the corner surrounded on 2 sides by fencing. I did notice though a burrow on the other side of the fence going under to the composter so I wonder if that is where they are nesting. I haven't used the composter for years so it is dried up. Maybe if I take the lid off of it but if that is where they are I don't want to be getting to close, if you know what I mean. LOL When I put the composter in I buried the sides of it quite deep so nothing could get underneath.

I only have a yew bush and a rose bush in my backyard other than the grass so I don't know why they would be in my yard. My neighbour has a big wooden outbuilding and the other neighbour has huge gardens and a pool on the other side.

Our city offers free traps to trap skunks but you are responsible to get rid of the creature. I don't like the idea of poisoning any animal. I will just keep Loki out of the back yard at night. I should dismantle the composter but I want to be sure nothing is inside of it. LOL

Loki still has a slight smell of skunk around his neck. I don't want to put his new collar on yet so I have been using his choke chain on him when I tie him out front. I use it when we walk so he is used to it but it is heavier than the collar. When I put it on him he thinks he is going for a walk. LOL

Loki's coat is nice and fluffy and shiny from all the bathing. I will spray him again tomorrow with the Nok-Out again when it is nice out so he can lie in the sun. I think the odour is staying around the house because of the moisture in the air from the rain.

Last night I went to put on a clean t-shirt to wear to bed and I could smell the skunk on it.

I also don't like the fact that I will probably carry the scent on me for a while no matter how many showers I take. LOL

I need to get a deskunking kit made up just in case there may be a next time which I am going to try to avoid at all costs. LOL

Spring air should be nice smelling flowers not eau de skunk.

I too went through this exact same thing 3 years ago. My dog got sprayed in my backyard and I let her in just before smelling the awful smell that came with her! I used tomato juice which everyone's heard of, and I swear it made the smell worse! I quickly ran my DD's prom dress over to a neighbours, cuz I didn't want the kids turning their noses up whenever she walked by if that stink got into her dress.

My sister found the same solution mentioned by caroline and eccentric on the internet. I ran out to a 24 hour Shopper's Drug Mart, and got the ingredients bathed the dog. She smelled 90% better after the first washing, and that was good enough for me since the spraying and 2 baths (the 1st in tomato juice) had traumatized her. The next day it rained and the skunk smell kind of intensified again when she got wet. So I rebathed her in the peroxide solution and the smell was pretty much gone after that. I tried using sprays and stuff to rid my house of the stench, but it still needed about a week keeping windows open to really get rid of the smell completely. Rebathe Loki in the solution if there is still any skunk smell, it really works!

I'm just heading out for pizza with friends. I took my coat out of the closet and whoa did it smell of skunk. I sprayed it with the Nok Out and have it hung outside on the mailbox in the wind until they pick me up. LOL I told them no comments from the pizza gallery and that some people pay lots of money to buy musk. LOL I just got mine free but from the wrong source. God help me. LOL

I am going to ask my friend to stop at Shopper's on the way home to get the peroxide and I will try that. Loki just has a faint smell around his neck as far as I can tell but then I think I am immune to the smell now. I think his bed smell irritates me more, the cedar chips make it smell like a hamster cage and is terrible without the cover to mask the cedar scent. Cats like it though. I have used almost all the spray bottle of Nok Out and wil probably have to get another. That spray bottle cost me $15.99

Amazing how this skunk smell gets into everything, closed up spaces that Loki wasn't even in or near. Everything in my drawers and closets reak of skunk and they were all shut tight.

I am glad you got your daughter's prom dress out of the house before the odour clung to it.
