Dog sprayed by skunk - HELP!

Y'all are probably already in bed - but HELP!

The dog just got sprayed by a skunk!

What's the cure????

She's in the shower now - Hubbys dousing her with white vinegar, then going to give her a good shampoo.

Any KNOWN cures for this STANKY pooch???

NO TOMATO JUICE! Use a quart bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide, a 1/4 to 1/2 cup baking soda, and a squirt of shampoo. It will neutralize the smell. Leave on as long as possible before rinsing. Repeat as needed.

We had a similar situation with a beagle that we had to put down since she kept having seizures and we also suspected Frontline. Now I make homemade dog food and go as natural as possible with our dogs. With fleas, we've had some success with soaking them down with chopped up lemon peels.

I can't believe your animal control said that - how do they think the cats ended up there to begin with? You might want to try speaking with the Humane Society, or whatever group you've got there, to see if they can help you with the cats. I love cats, and have 4 of my own, but I would draw the line at a feral cat population in my yard. Obviously, if the cat food was gone, the skunks would wander away. I found an Oklahoma animal control company that has links to feral animal rescue organizations - I hope that something here can help you. One other thought - it might be worth a look at your town ordinances about having things that attract wildlife to your yard. There are a couple people here in NJ that are having fights with their towns because their cat/bird feeding is attracting rats, snakes, skunks, and heaven knows what else. We were skunked 3 weeks ago. About 4 am, my husband found our 13 pound dog SHAKING a skunk in the backyard. As my huband bathed the dog immediately, I was looking for instructions on the internet. We did EVERYTHING wrong. LOLOL Well,finally, the house is better, the dog still is stinky but has improved. We ordered products from the internet that helped the house smells but didn't seem to do much for the dog. We think our dog ingested skunk spray and it is still being eliminated from his body via the skin. Fortunately, he did not get ill. Lessons were learned! LOLOL

Our cure works, but you need some peroxide! 3% peroxide, baking soda and dish soap.

We use 2 bottles of peroxide, 1 box of baking soda, and a couple of tablespoons of dishsoap.

Wet the dog completely, and then rub her all over with the soap mix. Let stand as long as possible, we try for 10 mins with the trembling, shivering, shaking dog making us feel as miserable as he is LOL!

You can't use this near her eyes, but you can rub over her ears, top of her head etc a few times to get as much of the skunk smell off as possible.

You can wash her with her regular shampoo after if you have the patience. Bernie has been skunked several times, but the last time was a full face full, and he needed two baths of this stuff to get him completely scent free.

Good luck! Oh, and you can use the mix in the washer for the smelly towels etc if you want! Works well. Kym

Tomato juice! Soak her in Tomato Juice cheap as can be. Scrub her real good with a strong plain soap nothing with aloe or moisturizers because those will take the stank into the skin YUK soap while soaking in Tomato Juice.

I had a bit of success with a large can of tomato sauce and vinegar mix in an emergency but the tomato juice worked the best every time.

Mouth breath and you wont notice it so bad!

Peroxide, peroxide, peroxide. Does that count for three votes? LOL.. It really is the best...The method with the baking soda and shampoo is a good one.

With the peroxide solution, you must add a quart of water too or it will be too harsh on his coat.

Yes, the 1 qt. peroxide, 1 qt. water, 3-4 Tablespoons Dawn dish soap, and 1/2 baking soda solution really does work.

Harry's been sprayed three times this spring already. We keep "kits" of the peroxide/water/dawn/soda made up ready to open, mix, and use.

I feel for you. My Loki was sprayed in the face last April. People who handle skunks use the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and Dawn dish soap method. It is a chemical reaction that neutralizes the scent,

Tomorrow go to the pet store and buy something that you can spray around your house. The odour gets into every closed drawer and closet and it will take at least 3 weeks to a month for the smell to leave.

I don't let my dog out back anymore at night. I can't go through that trauma again. LOL Loki physically cringes every time he smells a skunk.

We went through that last year with Lucy. She put her nose right up to the skunks behind and ahhhhhhhhh!!!!! Tomato juice only works when they are still wet, as soon as they dry the stink comes back. The only thing that worked for Lucy was the peroxide, baking soda and dish soap mixture. Good luck!

We ended up dousing her white vinegar and letting her soak for a few minutes, then followed by a good shampooing. (an emergency call to a friend whose dog is a frequent skunk finder told me this). So far so good - but I have heard that the smell will come back. When it does, it looks like the peroxide, baking soda, dish soap mixture will be in order. I don't think she got sprayed afterall - I think it was on the lawn and she rolled in it! Why do dogs insist on rolling in stinky stuff??

I read the other day that if you don't have tomato juice on hand to use ketchup.

Don't mix up the peroxide/baking soda in advance, it will deteriorate quickly. Peroxide turns into plain water and baking soda will loose it sizzle. Just keep a couple of bottles of peroxide and some boxes of baking soda on the shelf.

Vinegar and tomato juice are acids and will not neutralize the skunk smell. The solution I posted is base, and will indeed work best.

Only thing DB and DSIL found to work was Massingill. She was a little embarrassed to go to the drug store to buy a case of the stuff--LOL--but it did the trick.
