Need help figuring out wallpaper quantity

I've had two estimate for a room for wallpapering and one person said we need 5 rolls, the other said 12! The Cole and Sons website says, based on the size of my walls (a 6 ft 5" square room) that I need 5 rolls. But, that site doesn't factor in the pattern repeat. How do I figure this out? The paper is 11 yards long by 27" wide and the pattern repeat is 40". Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks.

The 5 rolls is probably based on double rolls, the 12, single rolls~most wallpapers are sold in double rolls only. With a 40" repeat I would rather be safe than sorry, and order 6 double rolls, but the ideal could be 6 double and 1 single, which is 13 single rolls. I think if it were me, I would order 7 double rolls to be on the *extra*'safe side~the larger-than-average size pattern is going to be the trouble maker. ;o)

How high are your ceilings? You need to figure out how long each piece of wall paper needs to be first. So if your walls are 8' then each piece needs to be 96" long + 40" for pattern repeat=136".

Then how wide are the walls. If 77" then you'll need (77/27=2.85) 3 drops per wall. With 4 walls you'll need 12 drops of 136" each or (12x136=1632") 45 yards. Obviously you have a doorway into the room you may be able to get away with a little less, but probably not. Windows will potentially also save some room too.

Then you need to make sure if the 11 yards is per single roll or more likely per double roll. Wallpaper is sold in double rolls. So you want to make sure you get enough double rolls to make it work.

Of course if you have shorter or taller ceilings, then the measurement will change. And just make sure the repeat is correct as that is a very long repeat...40"...over 3 feet....

I had tin tiles in a bathroom in my old house. They were ugly and rusted, but I painted them anyway. Made a HUGE difference and lasted several years! I think we used epoxy paint, but it was a long time ago. I'm sure a paint dealer would sell you the right stuff. It was not hard at all...just like ordinary painting, looked flawless and there were no brushmarks at all...had a high gloss, mirror finish! Easy to keep clean, too. As for wallpaper, I love the stuff. I have it everywhere! I have vinyl type in my kitchen, where I do a LOT of cooking, and it washes easily and well. I have it in my main bathroom, too, and despite all the steam four of us could put it through every day for the past 9 years, it still looks terrific. And those walls were (still are) awful underneath the paper. I think paintable wallpaper is a good suggestion, but why not just use wallpaper and eliminate one process? You will always see the seams on wallpaper, paintable or not, but done correctly, printed wallpaper seams are almost invisible - IMO, they are far less visible on printed than they are on paintable wallpaper. If you didn't notice the bad walls under the old paper, you probably won't be able to see the bad walls under new paper, either. I also think 5 years is not long enough for such an expensive investment as good wallpaper. But, then, I'm not much for change in my house. And whatever paper you use, be sure you size it first!

Karen: which technique are you doing? Textured wallpaper over old wallpaper? Or one of the others? Rereading my post (after getting some sleep) it reads more like I am asking about texturing with drywall compound (like imitating venetian plaster, or a tuscan stucco look). PLEASE come back and tell me how it went! I have seen the paper bag technique done on home improvement shows. ItÂs actually simpler. Dipping in poly would be very messy and sticky. You adhere the paper with latex glaze or acrylic matte medium. Then cover with the same clear liquid to seal it in before painting. My hesitation with doing that is if someday down the road you didnÂt want such a texture, you could NEVER get it off. The entire room would have to be skimcoated by someone with the skills to get it really flat and smooth. I donÂt think I want to go that route. At least with drywall compound texturing it could be sanded off smooth easily.

Need help - wallpaper removal gone wrong!

Last night I finished removing all the wallpaper. I scored it, sprayed with water and a little dish detergent, scraped, and pulled. I don't think that this stuff would ever have disintegrated. If I sprayed and came back 5 minutes later, it was dry. I could not see any way to saturate it, but I kept spraying as I worked on it. Most of it came off OK, but there are a lot of places where the top layer of drywall came with it. The drywall guy is coming tomorrow and I'm hopeful that he can fix it. I am glad that I removed it, especially since I found a small spot of mold. I also took a ceiling sample for asbestos testing even though the guys working on my house didn't think it was necessary. I hope they are right, but $95.00 is a small price for peace of mind. I'll give another update after the next step. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I'm confused. Why do you need a rod pocket if your are using hooks and rings? I would get a linen in a color of the background. As much as I like orange, I think it will upstage the wall paper. Do you have to mount it on the outside, because the interior screen takes up the depth? Take a look on Vermont Country Store. Many of my rooms have curtains from them. I like these Sheers in Natural.

At the price of wallpaper, it's hard to justify purchasing more than you think you will need, but it is definitely better to be safer than sorry!

You can use the extra, you know! You can cover many items like old chests, drawer fronts, picture frames, and boxes to use for gifting.

The repeat is huge on the paper because it is a pillar and arch paper. I second verifying that they are both talking about double rolls. You may also be able to get input from the vendor since this paper has such a large pattern.
