Slugs and other pests eating from my hydro system outdoors
Comments (9)With hydroponics as opposed to soil growing, it's not as simple to use many of the slug solutions. You don't want to add much weight to the raft if possible, and you want to make sure you're not adding stuff to the nutrient solution that will cause problems. With your design I'd focus my efforts to the area around the tubs. If you can keep them from crawling up the sides you should be able to stop them cold. You might also try ringing the upper rim with duct tape. Tape around the rim so that half the tape (long-ways) is sticking up with the sticky side pointing outward. So what the slug sees as it climbs up is the top of the rim, and then an immediate sticky wall going up a little further. Then, coat the sticky part of the duct tape with as much salt as it will hold. Just don't let any salt into the reservoir because it's bad for plants. Also, I'd recommend looking into the reproductive cycle of slugs. If they can reproduce in the conditions found on the raft, hydroton, or reservoir you may have a bigger problem on your hands....See MoreFeedback on stereo equipment from electric supply
Comments (19)Tube amps, by their nature, will have some hum, as I understand it, more than solid state. True, they sound nicer, but there's more hum. As for 'interconnects' or fancy power cables, 'Monster' cable or others, it's all a bunch of nonsense, as any real engineer will tell you, or, at the very least the 'gain' in these fancy cables are not worth the money. Whilst I'm not working at the moment, I've spent my entire working life in the film and tv industry and spoken to many many professionals who know more than me, and they're all agreed about how much bunkum there is about fancy cables. The other thing to consider is, I presume there are signals sent through the power network like there is in Australia, for off-peak power etc - that means there's a modulation if you like, over the waveform - I don't know better how to explain it, but you'll hear this as varying different hums and buzzes in things like audio equipment or sometimes in fluorescent lights. A separate circuit with a dedicated ground (if legal) is considered best practice for audio and video stuff, the hospital grade thing ought to work, but there are limits to what you can do. Power conditioners are great and sexy but should be unnecessary with correctly functioning equipment, that's correctly designed. Other things to look out for is coiling of power cords, or running power cords and audio and speaker cables too close to power cords, or in parallel with them - if you must go near the power cable, try to cross it at right angles. It may be worthwhile, if you're handy, to shorten the power cords to just what you need, to reduce clutter and to help keep cables apart....See MorePlease help me plan a Teen Outdoor Boy/Girl Party!
Comments (20)I think it's great you want to start this tradition! I did something similar with my kids, and I thought I was lame because I didn't plan too far in advance. And I never consulted Pinterest, the bad mom that I am. But every year my kids and their friends (and their parents) kept participating and appreciated that someone was providing the venue. They won't remember your food or how you decorate, but will remember how you brought them together for fun. Saying that, 13-year-olds are completely unpredictable and irresponsible when it comes to serving themselves food. Unless you want to police how many slices of pizza or how many sundae toppings they can have, I recommend planning for much more than you think will be eaten, unfortunately. I love this age group, but they haven't learned the "my eyes are bigger than my stomach" mantra. Regarding what type of food, I would serve a variety of healthy foods presented in a fun way, like fruit kabobs and fun veggie dips, as well as easy-to-serve like pre-ordered deli sandwiches or pizza. Maybe an ice cream sundae bar if you have the means to keep the ice cream cold during serving time. I would not serve any virgin version of a cocktail. Even among parents you think you know, someone will misinterpret this in a way you did not intend. Water and lemonade are all that I would serve. A craft root beer is as adventurous as I'd get. Music, a few activity items available, etc., and the kids will create their own entertainment. I love what they can create to keep themselves entertained!...See MoreChoosing a Make Up Air system for a 1959 house
Comments (0)I have a 1959 house in Gainesville, Florida. I am buying a 30" induction cooktop on an island. I am looking either for a hood or a downdraft system, maybe Captura Best, but I think I am gonna go the healthier way (a hood). I have these questions: 1) I think I want to have a Make Up AIR system (MUAs) even if I choose a 400 CFU unit. Although in Florida I can probably go up to 800 CFU, cause I think I have no "gravity vent appliances" (no fireplace and no gas, I will double check with my HVAC if the furnace in the heat pump heating/cooling system is an issue) I still think its better to have the MUAs and not to draw air from gaps and crawl space (where I actually have a Radon vent to vent it outside). Besides the obvious better performance of the hood compared to downdraft to remove fumes, is there a difference in how I should design the MUA system given the CFUs (e.g., is the MUAs design and cost the same for a 400 CFU downdraft or a 400 CFU hood)? 2) I have no ERV system. Can I buy an ERV system that has an embedded MUAs, or it does not make much sense (Spurpura on this post says that she has one, she says "high-end ERV systems (including a mix of other parts and computer and analog controls) can control the mix of indoor and outdoor air on the fly. Under sealed home conditions, this would result in positive, negative, or neutral pressurization for the home. When the vent hood is taken into consideration (providing a source of negative pressurization for the home), the ERV system can be set to mix more outdoor with indoor air to achieve positive/negative/neutral pressurization (as desired)."). 3) assuming that a ERV with embedded MUA is a bad idea since my house might not be sealed (how to test?), where should the MUAs air enter my open space kitchen/family room area? 4) Is a silencer needed for the MUA? 5) What is the best way to activate the MUA once I turn on the hood?...See Morestonesmama
