Moving on to next decision, Need help with Window style

The next remodeling decision I need to make concerns the replacement windows we need to order to replace the single pane aluminum in the house. The current old windows have a larger upper sash, smaller lower, which I think is the oriel or reverse cottage style. We have been debating whether to keep same style in the replacement windows in order to maximize view out to the back yard. The house sits on 7 acres and we have windows all along the back of the house that overlook that back yard. We want windows without any divided lites to leave the view open as much as possible. We you keep the same style so that while sitting on sofa in family room or master bedroom would have more unobstructed view or does that style window look wrong in brick ranch house, or look too 70's aluminum windows? If you did the uneven sashes on the back, would you just go ahead and do them on all windows in the house? Or just the back?

I'm all for preserving the view. An attractive view out the windows adds much enjoyment to living in a house. We have either bought homes because they had wonderful, big windows (along with house size & condition, of course) or else we've added or enlarged windows to bring in the view.

It would be helpful to post a picture of your house before commenting on the window style, but if you didn't find the large upper/small lower configuration objectionable, then I say go ahead & stick with it. Will you be going with a fixed upper and awning lower?

Here is a photo on front of house, just a very dreary day. We are replacing with double hung windows, but no mullions. Not sure if the picture helps enough

Now I am wondering if I should do both heights of the island in the marble...! Cosmonj, the cabinets are custom, from a cabinet shop in the south of Boston area. I would recommend him with no reservations if you are in this area. Very reasonable for custom, also. The style is slab drawers and shaker doors but with a 1/8 inch offset instead of the more common 1/4 inch, which makes them look more contemporary, with just a but more detail than a slab. Plumberry, the BS is "White statuary calacatta polished, cascading waterfall mosaic". I got it from a Tile Showcase showroom in Watertown, MA. It's not on their website but you can call them to order a sample (www.tileshowcase.com).

The best to you and hope it works. Addictions can destroy peoples lifes. I just went through some things w/brother in law. We had to cut all ties. He has destroyed his life and hurt my son, me and everyone else who care. Now he only surronds himself with people who use him and put up with his distructive behavior. If he were to get better we may forgive but I think/know he is intent on killing himself with drinking. He had been going to AA for years so he knows what he is doing. For your sake and people around you please continue on the path to sobriety.

Thank you all! We are going to do the Restoration casements! Should I have any of those big trapezoid windows tempered? See picture above. My estimate does not have them listed as tempered...just some other windows that are a certain distance from the floor. Anything that I should specifically look for/have put in the contract? This is not full tear out. You guys rock for taking your time to help guide homeowners!

Todd - that’s what I thought. Thanks! Steward of Design - I would love to do some sort of grid I believe that looks more farmhouse. I feel many people are over the farmhouse look but it’s exactly what this home is so I can’t see it any other way. And it’s who I am... way before it was a cool trend lol Good call with the larger window in the middle and two casements on the side. We will be moving the main door to the middle gable eventually, I have to keep that in mind too. I wonder how silly it will look to just replace the bottom window on the right until we get to the rest of the windows. I’m thinking it won’t look any sillier than it does right now - everything all miss matched. Here is a photo of a home to give better idea of window idea placement.

Large upper/small lower would be fine. Your house is mostly contemporary except for the traditional looking shutters. Pretty brick, nice lines & good proportions -- a handsome house!
