social security card stolen

where do you go to get the free credit scores?

I found one place that gives you all three at once.

I understand that you should check one every four months.

DS had his wallet stolen, he had his social security card

in it. His drivers license, debit card, charge card, aaa card. My mind isn't functioning right now. I claim

chemo brain and tiredness! lol

Experian charges a dollar? He needs to put some kind of

block on it too. I'm so tired! He is on his way home

Because of a federal law, there's a place you can get free credit reports from all three bureaus (Experian,Equifax and TransUnion) once a year. Yes, absolutely free, no charge. The only hitch is you can get them only once a year. The site is called Annualcreditreport (all one word). You don't have to join anything or pay, but you must know your Social Security number.By the way, if you lose your Social Security card or someone else uses your number, you can get a replacement Social Security card from the Social Security Administration for free. The only thing you cannot do is get a different new Social Security Number. Your number is assigned once for life.

Is This True...Social Security Benefits (kinda long)

Alcohol laws vary state by state and even within certain states they can vary by county. Unemployment law varies state by state. If you have questions you need to read what the law is in YOUR state. It is extremely unlikely that you are going to find specifics about Alabama on a discussion board inhabited by Texans, Canadians, Wisconsinites, New Yorkers, and Australians speaking off the cuff. One thing is for sure, and that is that Muni Court cannot control what the Federal Social Security Office does. Now then, Social Security does have rules about paying benefits to those who are incarcerated for crimes they commit, while they are incarcerated. They don't send SS checks to prisoners in jail. Once out, even felons can receive SS checks if they are routinely eligible. Social Security benefits are not paid for the months you have been sentenced to a jail, prison or correctional facility or confined to certain public institutions for committing a crime. And, no benefits can be paid for any month in which you violate a condition of your probation or parole. Although you cannot receive monthly Social Security benefit payments while you are confined, your spouse or children can be paid benefits on your record if they are eligible. I don't know the all the laws in AL but I cannot see a first time offender, young girl working retail, doing any actual jail time over this. Then again I know that Alabama has dry counties and maybe judges have a "get tough" policy regarding the enforcement of alcohol laws and dole out harsh punishments for disobeying the alcohol laws. In my state there would be a HUGE monetary fine for something like this and it could be charged as a felony or a misdemeanor depending on the circumstances surrounding the case. There could possibly be jail time depending on the circumstances of the case. There may be loss of license for premise owner and also for the employee. For an employee to lose their license would be devastating as most employers won't hire someone without one even though they can. If there is jail time AND the girl is currently receiving SSI checks for one reason or another, (some minors can receive if they are in school and a parent is deceased or disabled) her checks would cease while she is incarcerated. Maybe that is what the employer was referrig to. I guess we will never really know. Read up on SS law to find out more. abc.alabama.gov

Social Security at 62 - where to deposit funds?
Q
Comments (20)
Hi Yoda who uses a ruler, Not being familiar with your system, I can't give any suggestions as to what reasons there may be to have separate bank account for taxable and non-taxable assets. In Canada we have accounts looking toward retirement where deposits are tax-deductible and the income over the years is, as well ... but every dollar coming out is taxable, and, after about age 70, there are minimum amounts required to be withdrawn annually. They must be in different accounts, of course. When I borrow for regular living expenses, consumer loans, which I plan almost never to do, I have one line of credit that I use for that. I was a personal financial consultant for years and recommended to folks that they have 3 - 6 months' worth of income as a financial cushion, available when needed, and in recent volatile times in the economy am more inclined to suggest 9 months' equivalent to a year's worth of income available in case of need, emergency, layoff, or whatever. I didn't always have such myself, which I told a number of clients, having used much of that fund for investments ... but had a credit card which I rarely used, which could be used in case of emergency, or whatever (I was self-employed, so could usually see an equivalent to a "layoff" coming before it happened). I had a line of credit, fully secured by stocks/mutual funds, some of them that I'd purchased with the "emergency fund", at the bank or, preferably, credit union, which I could draw on in an emergency. I would make a loan using that consumer line of credit to pay off the amount owing on the credit card for the emergency, just after the first billing, to avoid paying their high interest rate (about 4 times the rate on the line of credit, or 6 times if it were a store-issued card: I don't have any of them!). Then I'd make extra savings strenuously for a time to pay off the loan on the line of credit. I don't like using someone else's money to live on now ... and having to pay it back, later ... with (non-deductible) interest. Sometimes, after a bad time in the stock market, when things began to improve, I might make a loan to make further investments, and, as the interest paid on most investment loans is deductible, I'd set up a separate line of credit for that use, using the investments that I'd purchased using the "emergency fund" (along with some others, as the financial institution will only loan about half of the value of the security held), so that the interest rate on the loan would be lower. That's a place where I keep my deductible and non-deductible financial issues separate. Good wishes as you plan your retirement .. and implement the plan: I hope that you have no/few unpleasant surprises. Which you can usually reduce by careful planning, preferably ahead of time. ole joyful

Did You Get Yours? (Social Security Letter)
Q
Comments (22)
I haven't gotten a letter yet, but there has been a lot of talk about it among the residents here at the retirement community. Because so many of us are in the "older generation" and our SS was based on the rates many years ago, we were making jokes about what the increase would mean for us. We pretty much decided we should all go out to celebrate . . . maybe at the local hot dog shack!! Laughter is good for the soul. Sue

Cell phone required to access your 'My Social Security' account
Q
Comments (60)
Haha. The email is clearly real. I got one and thought nothing more of it until coming upon this thread. There's an irony with this. Two-step authorization measures are implemented, in part, precisely because people get hysterical about security and perceived risks. So the very measure used to address those who are worried about security, is distrusted by those same people and leads to more feelings of risk and insecurity. Too many folks, especially oldsters, don't want to be confronted with truth or fact that conflicts with a view they've reached and want to cling to. It's unbelievable. Those of you who want to think of the email as being phony are entitled to do so. Just don't be shocked with what happens the next time you try to sign in to the SSA website (you'll be asked to supply a cell phone number to receive a text). I just tried it out, it works fine. Those who don't have a cellphone can call or visit a SSA office. This isn't a big deal, it's just an added security step for web access. Yawn.

I think that if your SS card is stolen or your CC you can check it more often due to identity theft. I'd check with your son's bank. They may have some experience with this.

There is information on the internet, from your credit cards etc what to do. Just some of the things I remember, is to make a police report, and if you do not have any kind of identy theft program, you might have to notify each credit card co. etc. Also I don't think any of the credit bureau's charge for reporting this. If you get the free report, it also tells you what to do. I hope this helps.

thanks everyone. last night on the equifax site that
rajun posted in SamKaren's post, DS did the 90 day alert.
And it was sent to the other two credit companies.

He won't be able to get a replacement DL until Tuesday.
He has his old license that expired in 2005 in his
new wallet. He had the spare key to his truck in his
wallet also. Thank goodness the bad guys didn't find that
and steal his truck. He drove my car to work this morn.

The bad guys charged a redbox dvd. They tried to get a
$100 cash advance that was declined, but they DID charge
a little over $102 at a (as the chg card co. says..)
convenience ret... I'm assuming that is convenience retail, lol
So they are doing a fraud report.
He spoke with the police department. I'm guessing the
bad guys bought gas, what else could you buy for that
much money at a convenience store? Beer and gas maybe?
DS is soooo angry. Not too many people will match his
pic and description on his drivers license! 6'6" 280 lbs.
big BALD white guy! scary looking! lol

he was in Hayden Lake, Idaho (the home of many neo=nazis)
with his summer baseball team a few years ago. And
the owner of a little convenience store confronted him
and told him to get out, he didn't serve people like him.
DS was like, "Ummmm, baseball players?" lol It took the
coach and other team mates to talk the guy down and
let DS buy dome food for lunch.

Sounds like what happened to me. When my wallet was stolen, they tryed a few small purchases first--to make sure I hadn't cancelled the card, then a larger one (which was turned down), then a smaller one again, to check to see if the refusal was because I had a limit on transactions.

These things are done by organized theft rings--your husband's fits the pattern. On the upside, they tend to take the credit cards and cash and toss the rest of the stuff in the dumpster. You do have to be on your toes for the next several years, but luckily, I've had no further problems. And it was fortunate, at the time, that since my bank's computer was aware that I don't use my card for day-to-day purchases, the unusual activity kicked it right out as something unusual and the card was immediately frozen after the second suspicious purchase.

I know how he feels, and hope he can relax a bit, and get past this--it's horrible when someone does that.

Oh, keep track of all the losses this involves for you--it may be possible to use them as a deduction on your taxes next year--ask your accountant.

Azzalea, it was my son, he had forty dollars, and the cards. He thinks it's some younger guys. He uses redbox and when a video is checked out, it sends him an email. Well, he got
an email about 2 or 3 video games being checked out. He
said those particular videos are ones that teen boys tend
to use. what a pain. I hope they threw out the wallet,
and didn't keep his dl or extra truck key!
