New pool - want to put out speakers

So we just recently built a new pool (late last year) and I am looking to add music outdoors. Rather than bring a boombox in and out of the house every day, I would like something more permanent. I have looked at the rocks and the unidirectional speakers, but I am not sure on which one to get. Also, how do you recommend I power them?

I use the rocks and love them. I powered a marine stero to drive them... I went through this step to get a water proof remote to control it from the hot tub and pool with no worries.

We just installed some outdoor speakers from Home Theater Direct (do a search), and I am amazed how good the $79 outdoor pair sounds - plenty loud for any regular size lot, and excellent bass. I did install some high definition in ceiling speakers in a covered patio a few years back without any problems (they are awesome for home theater). Don't be fooled by the cheap prices - the speakers are high quality and come with 5 year warranty. There is no better deal to be found anywhere.

Thanks shavedmonkey, remember I told you in another tread that we only get superthrive here in Jamaica well I use it with 20-20-20 every other watering. Oh and I prayed a lot too Ã°ÂÂÂ that's it. Get everything priced individually as Damien suggests. This way you can compare cost of different parts of the project. If you decide you don't want to do a particular part of the project you know how much you don't need to pay. Or you may want to get multiple bids for only certain parts of the project. If the company doesn't want to itemize everything, they are trying to hide costs. The only way to know if you'd save substantial money is to compare to keep the contractor honest (&let them know it). I would caution against doing everything at once since what you envision may not come to life. For example you may think everyone will congregate in one part of the yard but they actually end up using another. Good luck!

cmc- I recently put in a fence to replace one that had been destroyed by several falling trees in a freak windstorm. The neighbor sharing the property line had their yard fenced on the other three sides, and it was clearly to their advantage to have the fourth side fenced as they have a dog. I talked with them about splitting the cost, but they had recently moved in and were tight on cash, and said they would only be able to chip in if we could put if off for several months. We decided to go ahead and pay for the whole thing because we wanted it done. We didn't feel bad about how this worked out, and we like our neighbors enough that we put in a gate between the yards. The bottom line is that it's ok for her to ask for help with the cost, and it's ok to tell her it's not in your budget. As a compromise, tell her you'll contribute 1/2 the cost of a shock collar :-)

I bought some rock speakers from a now defunct home store(HQ)for around the pool and some JBL outdoor speakers from J&R for the pergola above the hot tub. I had a stereo integrated amp from an old HT setup for one pair and went to CC and bought the cheapest stereo receiver I could find for the other. What I couldn't find was outdoor speaker wire that didn't require a second mortgage. While at HD I told one of the associates of my dilema and he suggested using low voltage lighting cable. I did and my speakers havn't missed a beat in almost 15 years. Just FYI.

great info... how do i power these speakers with an amp? are their weatherproof ones?

Speakers outside good, amplifier outside bad....

Amp has to be out of the elements, either under cover or inside.

I run an Apple Mac Mini computer through a Denon A/V receiver, which is connected to speakers throughout our home as well as outside in the pool area. I can play my entire iTunes library or access my Sirius Internet Radio off the Mac Mini. All the speakers have their own volume controls located throughout the house and outside at the bar, cabana and hot tub.

We power 5 pairs of speakers around the pool. 2 rock speakers, 2 inground, 2 "PipeAudio" speakers in the cabana, and 2 Bose 301's at the bar and 2 marine waterproof speakers located in the planter pedestals that surround the raised pool spa.

I can control the Mac Mini from another laptop that sits in the cabana and is connected to my wireless computer network. I use logmein.com to do that. It's just like gotomypc.com, except it's free. This allows us to choose channels on the Sirius Internet Radio, and control what plays out of iTunes, never leaving the cabana. W

Sounds complicated, but it's really not. I did all the hookups myself.
