my daughters kindergarten quilt (pics)

I offered to help the quilting project for my daughter's

kindergarten.

Apparently my daugher picked the pink butterfly fabric and

was disappointed when she realized it was going on the back, so I tried to incorporate it on the front... Not sure I was successful, but it's done!

It's donated to a needy family.

I think it is lovely, and the pink adds a nice touch to the front. They did a good job for a great cause.

The essence of celtic is a design appliqued with bias binding that you make yourself. It goes over inserts of fabric or just over the quilt top fabric. You could make your own designs, but I used a pattern I found it in a book on Celtic quilting. I think I mentioned it in my other posting on Celtic style quilting. Someone suggested another book on the subject in that thread. The binding width can vary. I used it in a non-celtic design in a hanging, but I never finished it and have probably tossed it out. We moved recently and you do a lot of purging when you move.

The quilt is so sweet, and probably just the thing she'll appreciate as she undergoes therapy. Oh, how I daydream sometimes of just having the house to myself - being a hermit wouldn't be all bad, I don't think. My husband retired a year ago - need I say more? (BTW, my DD has an eating disorder).

Every year when the kids were little I made their Halloween costumes. 3 outfits, three different sizes.Some years they were the same thing others they had to be their own thing. One year I did all the costumes for DD's high school play. The next I was making Renaissance costumes so the kids could go to the Fair. Next thing I know I have a daughter in college taking costume design. Somewhere along the line she picked up on my love of sewing and making costumes. When I haven't a clue. As far as I knew when she left home for college the only thing she knew about sewing was that you didn't use fabric scissors on paper and visa versa. She got her degree in costume design and right now is using it to supplement her income by making costumes for her friends and doing small tailoring jobs on the side. So for all you mom's and grands who are wondering if it will make a difference to your child...........it might. It did here.

That's darling! What a nice project!

And from an area of the country where K class sizes are 22-24 kids, aren't you lucky that your daughter's class only has 12 kids!!

That quilt is so cute. I also love the 'hand-flowers.' It really makes me smile,and somehow conveys the innocence of little children.

I wasn't part of the finger/hand painting; however, it
looked like they took some kind of fabric paint and had the
children make their hand print. Then it appeared to me
that they took fabric paint and went around the handprint
AFTER it dried. Then did the bees and butterflies and bugs
and stems.
It was fun to do b/c each child had their 'hand' in it...
BUT the paint was such that you couldn't IRON it!!! THAT
was difficult. I'm used to piecing, ironing, piecing,
ironing, piecing, pressing... this was difficult. I
ironed the back and then it stuck to the board and whatever
else... THIS was difficult... The paint was rubbery.
My daughter is in a 1/2 day kindergarten - so they have 15
kids in the AM and 15 kids in the afternoon. Multiply this
by 6 classrooms. Lots of kids, but yes, I'm happy she is at
a 1:15 ratio.
I think the end result was good though.

That was a real cute idea and a great thing for the little ones to do. It turned out very nice and I think the butterfly fabric was a perfect why to tie the colors in the hands togeather. Great job. TFS. Jayne
