Venting hole towards the back of GE Cafe range?
Comments (5)I just bout a Cafe gas range, they are replacing it Monday, as it came damaged. With scratches. Also Mine has the vent your speaking of, however I do believe they left a part off on the inside of the vent at the left side. In comparison to the right side there appears to be a part missing and I can actually see some white material showing?? It looks like cotton type of insulation maybe? They are picking this one up Monday morning. I'm going this weekend to look at one, in the appliance store and see if the back looks the same as mine....See MoreGE Cafe vs. Bosch Benchmark Wall Oven
Comments (21)Disclosure: I am a grandmother, consumer, non-techie, and considering a move into the Consumer Advocate arena. The sections of this post include: - About Bosch Benchmark - GE Ovens - How Swing Effects Roasted/Baked Food - How to Estimate Your Oven’s Swing (aka variance or range) About Bosch Benchmark I am in the process of replacing my second Bosch Benchmark double wall oven. The top ovens had a swing of 93* and 73*, respectfully. The first oven performed beautifully for 6 months, the second for a few weeks. Faulty electronics were evident in my experience. Note: the first oven was version /01 (installed 12/15) the second version /04 (installed 2/2018). Bosch uses average temperature to determine if an oven operates within spec. Within 28 months, my ovens were operable for 9 months, inoperable for 19 months. **How many households with kids could keep their family on track with inoperable ovens?** Bosch, on their part, offered me a buyback this month. But it took a tremendous amount time and bird-dogging on my part. GE Ovens GE states on their website the acceptable swing is +/- 30* using a 350* temperature setting. Hence, your oven meets spec if it’s temperature ranges from 320* to 380* within a 20 minute cycle time. (Check out the GE Appliances site and search for ‘oven temperature variance.’) How Swing Effects Roasted/Baked Food Here are a few examples of how a high oven temperature swing effects food roasted/baked from tried-and-true recipes: - prime rib (shooting for MR) is well on the outside, bloody red around the bone - a tried and true family fruit cake recipe, baked for at least 70 years on all types of ovens, took much longer to bake, passed the tooth pick test, was sticky on the top center, and crumbled when sliced - a chicken and rice casserole never got done; I used the rice cooker to finish cooking the rice and the chicken was too tough to eat - two cake mix cakes, in which I adhered *exactly* to all directions, were baked using the shortest time indicated; they were full of tunnels, extremely dry, and tasteless How To Estimate Your Oven’s Swing 1. Position an oven thermometer in the center of the oven. (Cooks Illustrated recommends a CDN Oven Thermometer... of course Amazon has them.) - - - do not open the oven door until the test finishes - - - 2. Set your oven to 350*, and let it heat up for an hour. 3. Choose a start time. 4. Every 5 minutes (4 times in 20 minutes) note or take a pix of the oven thermometer. 5. The highest and lowest temperatures registered represent the oven swing. Note: technicians use a special tool to measure oven swing that is much more accurate. Phew! Time to return to my research!...See MoreGE Cafe French door double wall oven. Would this bother you?
Comments (57)To those who asked: Yes….You can easily remove the copper cuff from the handle. We bought stainless Wolf/Sub-Zero/Cove appliances with “Pro“ handles for our kitchen, but wanted the amazing Cafe Advantium microwave (with Pro handles) for the coffee bar area in the kitchen. We do love the Advantium. However, we were disappointed the emblem/cuff was copper instead of stainless, and there isnt even a stainless cuff option available for special order. The company claims this copper cuff was intentionally designed & ”jewelry inspired”. The copper cuff clashed with our other Pro handles, so we removed the cuff in five minutes with two allen wrenches. Looks much better now and matches our other appliance handles. Monogram/Cafe should offer the option of a discrete stainless cuff. Not everyone wants ”jewelry” on their appliance handles....See MoreGE Cafe vs. Wolf ... wall oven and microwave choices
Comments (14)“The french door has been greatly preferred by a friend in a wheelchair. She wheels the chair right up to the door to remove baked foods .” This is a more complex issue. She may need to be closer to the oven but she also needs a thermal barrier for this and possibly other cooking tasks. Hopefully she was able to have an occupational therapist help her with adaptive measures for her kitchen. This might seem like it is a good idea but if she drops anything there is no getting out of the way and there might not be away to remove what is dropped or spilled in a timely manner. A stay in the burn unit is not pleasant. A friend of mine also in a wheel chair was told by an occupational therapist that she could not even use her oven. It was suggested that a countertop oven might work. So much depends on the individual and other ways the kitchen has been adapted. “As for using a drop down oven door to hold a hot pan while rotating another, I would not feel comfortable doing this. While many oven doors might handle the weight , some do not. I once put a heavy pan on a door and sprung the door. “ I’m not switching anything heavy, but I do switch a whole lot of cookie sheets. My background is working in critical care and on an ambulance so much of my life is dealing with unexpected events. We have a business and part of it is providing safe room environments, but not in kitchens. We try to work with evidence based concepts but we don’t always have the statistics we need and it is that way with ovens. You can remove a certain percentage of injuries with a drop down door with spills. One door being less likely to burn over another might depend on the person using it and their build. I agree that that there are pros and cons and some people don’t care about the safety aspect of it. I always bring it up as an additional consideration that many do not think of. The idea is to make an informed choice. If I were wanting a French door oven, I think I would put a pull out cutting board underneath it with some sort of shallow well to hold liquids. It would be adjustable as to how far it comes out and would provide the two advantages of the drop down door. My cabinet maker put one under one of my countertops to attach my hand grinder and there wasn’t too much to doing it....See More- 11 years ago
