Bathroom Doors Too Short

We finally did our bathroom remodel. The tile around tub came out great, all the work was fantasic. Just a small bathroom.

The price from our contractor was very reasonable. He has done previous work in our house.

Anyway we had just regular old fashioned slab doors. For years I have been wanted to replace all the doors in the house with the panel type.

Contracter would install the 2 doors, no problem. For installation he charged a total of 120.

My husband really did not want to get it done but I insisted.

So a few days ago they go the doors in but needed to be trimmed. When he had the in, you could not open them up over the small bath carpet. So i mentioned to him to trim them so the door would not get stuck.

So he trimmed them, and they are terrible. They are so short. Both doors. I swear they are 5 inches above the floor.

I guess its my fault for not being more careful.

The doors were only I think 30 or 40 (they were not pre-hung).

I think I will have to buy 2 new doors and have him come back and replace them. I guess its not that quite expensive for him to do over.

He has really done a good job on everything else.

Oh man, bummer! I can imagine this happening to any of us. I'm sure folks will chime in here with more experience with contractors than I have, but it seems to me he should bear some or all of the financial responsibility for what was obviously a mistake on his part. What is your DH saying about this?

Did we use the same guy? This happened to a few of our doors. They were cut at random heights as though they had not even been measured. Anyway, we found the cut off pieces, got the guy to glue them on, then we repainted. I didn't think it would work but it did.

Thanks so much for your input everyone! Bevangel, special thanks to you for modifying my picture. It definitely helps to have a visual! I think moving the doors further into the hall will work, and should be very easy for the builder to do. We'd lose a little more exterior hallway space (the bedroom doors were originally at the dotted line), but having the longer hallway within the master bedroom will be more dramatic. I love this website! I'm glad I finally decided to join and stop lurking. ;)

"this is in Manhattan and I have no idea what the logistics are of getting demo done there are like and what disposal costs are " yes it's a lot of money- but perhaps you shouldn't weigh in until you've had a chance to park your truck in Manhattan, then wait on the service elevator or take the stairs, then wait on your tradesman to show up and find his parking, then pay for both, the actually demo the stuff and cart it out one trash can at a time and then fill up that truck and send it out to Jersey or Conn. for disposal as there just aren't many places on the little island that take busted up tubs and broken tile. You'll also need to markup these services and add a profit to the costs if you're running a business, so this stuff adds up quick ! This is EXACTLY why most businesses don't itemize costs, it simply invites discord because I'm sure anyone with an internet connection can find a cheaper price on a shovel or Moen faucet or laborer to cart out trash. You are paying for MANAGEMENT and expertise - not just a pretty faucet or trash removal and everyone want to make a PROFIT along the way.

Elphaba, I'm in Houston. We have completely gutted our "new" house and are in the process of rebuilding. Throughout the house, we have installed pockets for 4 pocket doors. One of those is in the master bath. I am really excited to be getting those doors out of the way. I can share my experience. We have 3 pocket doors in our office here, and we have not had any problems. The office is on a slab, and the thermostat is only kept at a comfortable level 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. This means that it gets fairly humid in there on the weekends. The office pocket doors are rarely used, but when I do use them, they work just fine. They were installed about 3 years ago without any problems. It's true that it is humid outside, but I wouldn't think with central air that it would be any more humid than anyplace else on the inside of your house. Of course a bathroom is more humid than other rooms, but if your cabinet hardware isn't sticking or rusting, I would think that the pocket door would behave in the same way. At least that's what I'm hoping since we just installed 4!!! My vote is for the pocket door. Best of luck with your project! Enduring, that's great info on the pocket doors. Thank you for sharing. Per the 2008 NEC: Article 404 "Switches", Part 4 "Damp or Wet Locations": Switches shall not be installed within wet locations in tub or shower spaces unless installed as part of a listed tub or shower assembly. Article 406 "Receptacles", Part 8 "Receptacles in Damp Locations": (C) Bathtub and Shower Space. Receptacles shall not be installed within or directly over a bathtub or shower stall. (Note: A "receptacle" is defined as an outlet where a user connects a plug.) Article 410 "Luminaires, Lampholders & Lamps", Part 10 "Luminaires in Specific Locations": (D) Bathtub and Shower Areas. No parts of cord-connected luminaires, chain-, cable-, or cord-suspended luminaires, lighting track, pendants, or ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans shall be located within a zone measured 900 mm (3 ft) horizontally and 2.5 m (8 ft) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. This zone is all encompassing and includes the space directly over the tub or shower stall. Luminaires located within the actual outside dimension of the bathtub or shower to a height of 2.5 m (8 ft) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower threshold shall be marked for damp locations, or marked for wet locations where subject to shower spray. Is this your fault that he cut them "way too high"? I'm not sure I'm excusing him from responsibility. He should know not to cut a door that high. When he installed them he should have installed them to clear your carpet and not wait for you to mention it. Sorry, my DH is a contractor and he just doesn't do stuff like that.

Hopefully fussy chicken's glue will work for your doors.

If it were me, no way would I be gluing my doors together because of an error he made.

I think this is the contractors fault here. You know "measure twice, cut once". As brutuses said, too, the contractor should have measured the opening and been able to tell BEFORE he installed them that the doors were a little too long for the opening. If the doors were only a bit too long and were rubbing, there is NO way he should have had to cut 5" off!

DH works for a door company that does commercial business. If they do something like this, they have to eat the cost. It's THEIR screw up, their fault.

This guy needs to correct this!

If you're not exaggerating and they are in fact 4" too high, why on earth would you have this guy back? My DH is in the remodeling business, too, and I'm with Brutuses on this - it never should have happened. At MOST, those doors should clear by about 3/4" and even that's a lot. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt, he's been great on the rest of your job and he had a total brain f*rt doing those doors for some reason, there's still no way you should be responsible for shelling out for new doors.

How in the world could he trim a door that much without cutting into the hollow core? It's my experience you cannot trim a door that much without ruining it.

Not to laugh at your misfortune, but this reminds me of a door my dad installed when I was a kid. My parents were building a house (DIY). Mom complained that a door was too short. Dad (getting the DIY grumpies) yelled, "D*mn it! I've cut that thing twice and it's still too short!" Oops. :-)
