Penguin Wallhanging

I made these penguins by tracing the feet of (almost) all the kids I care for. Each famly was given a wallhanging with their child/children in the center & the other kids around them. I added each name below w/fabric marker. Not sure it you can tell, but the white fabric is tot snowflakes.
I had a lot of fun making these, even w/two weeks of the month spent in the hospital. No sewing for quite awhile -which was a real bummer & got me way behind the 8 ball! lol All better now - just looking for where I left my energy, it's got to be around here someplace...
Will be popping in more often - pending no hospital stays, God willing & the creek don't rise!!

Cindy, that is just TOO cute! I love it. What kind of fabric did you use for the penguins' bellies? Your families are lucky to have you - and receive such a cute gift.

That's darling. I hope you're better now. Sorry you had to go through that. You should just leave a list for Jim and let him sew when you can't.

Are the kids names in there somewhere?

Woo Hoo....yesterday, after 3 attempts at sewing my first seam in almost 15 years and then finally getting it right, then sewing my next two seams on the incorrect sides of the pieces (I had to use a pin to pick it out because I don't know where my seam ripper from 15 years ago is), I finally got into a good rhythm and was able to finish up the inside 4 patches of a 9-patch block that is the first of two January birthday blocks. Then I made a mistake from misunderstanding a "how to" picture on a pattern. This required much more seam ripping than what I could do with a little pin and I decided to put it away until I was less frustrated and could go out and purchase an actual seam ripper. THEN...my eyes beheld a small tin of sewing supplies that I just inherited about 10 days ago from my grandmother. I wondered "Could there possibly be a seam ripper in it? Please, oh, please!" Tentatively, I looked through the tin.....YES! I hit pay dirt. I haven't felt so elated since....who even remembers when. So I ripped out the seam and tonight I WILL FINISH THIS BLOCK!!! These were my goals.... 1. One birthday block (finished) 2. 1 or 2 lotto blocks (unfinished...I cut out pieces to make one. They were brights, mostly batiks with WOW as background. I decided to keep them and make a "WOW, That's Colorful" pineapple block quilt with it myself!) 3. Finish washing all my fabrics for stashing...since I'm new, it's not like a truckload or anything. (washed some, purchased more, need to keep washing!) 4. Decide on a pattern for an April birthday block...maybe make it. (This has been started, but can't finish until I wash one of the fabrics!) 5. Begin and organize a notebook of birthday block participants (Bobbin Babes) along with photos of blocks I've sent and received. Hopefully everyone will post photos of all their blocks...I might add those to it also. (Started this, but won't be able to finish until the end of the year when everyone has gotten their blocks and hopefully will post photos) Not too shabby for a slow, deliberate doer like me! Salijo

As I feared, this wasn't a very productive month for me, but I did accomplish a few of my goals. 1. Label bear paw quilt. (Such a small task, but not done.) 2. Bind and label larger penguin top. (Bound, not labeled.) 3. Work toward finishing the older Lover's Knot tops. (Not even touched!) 4. Continue working on DS#1's tee shirt quilt. (Have all of the shirts cut apart.) 5. Make at least one crumb block a day. (YES) 6. Finish table toppers for DS#2 and DIL's nightstands. (No) 7. Make and send three May lotto blocks. (YES) I joined a once-a-month sewing group at my LQS this month. We sew from 10:00 to 4:00, with lots of chatting and snacks along the way. To have something different to work on, I pulled out a Thangles buck-a-block sampler, purchased at least two years ago and never started. It will become part of my June list. I made quite a bit of progress on it, prepping the pieces Monday and Tuesday and starting to assemble the blocks when the group met on Wednesday. My late April/early May wintersowing was very successful, so I've been tending hundreds of seedlings for several weeks. We have a freeze warning tonight, so I've tucked old blankets around the containers. They should be tough enough to handle the cold, but I don't have the nerve to gamble on the tender annuals when they're almost large enough to transplant. It's fun to follow everyone's monthly progress. Keep up the good work!! Bonnie

1.one or two block's for son's quilt 2.work on B&W&___Challenge (TOP COMPLETE AND SANDWICHED) 3.work on small quilt project for my friend (BLOCKS COMPLETED) 4.find and attempt Applique block for July/Aug. paper pieced/applique lotto (FOUND 2 POSSIBLE BLOCKS, CUT SOME FABRICS AND FUSIBLE) The weather this month has not helped any with getting things done. Last weekend, after hours of practicing and adjusted the machine for quilting my B&W Challenge, it stormed and the electric went out! (AND that was after discovering that the brand new needle I JUST put in was the problem behind all the skipped stitches I was getting!) Now I've lost my MOJO and have put off trying to quilt the B&W until I find it again. While the power was off THIS week, I cut out some fabric and fusible sheets for the applique blocks I want to try. ( That was before I found some other blocks I'd like to try!) So, I quite probably will need to cut more fabrics/fusible for the applique lotto blocks. And I also traced a jeans pattern onto pattern paper so that I can sew a custom fit pair of jeans. I really wish I could find a class on something like this as it's hard for me to grasp exactly what they are talking about during the whole 'tissue fitting' thing in the book Â I just can't find ready to wear jeans to fit anymore! Waaa! (It's h**l getting old and out of shape! :0) I also just spoke with my friend about her quilt and will think some more about how to put the blocks together and see if I can add borders/sashings and ties for her needs. The bellies are warm & white batting. Those little pieces I don't throw away (no comments retreaters! :) ) Linda, the names are written below each penguin.

Jim sewing??!! He now does laundry, vacuums, sweeps & scrubs kitchen, makes the bed, loads & unloads DW, & does a little (very little) cooking. This me being laid up & now him retired is awesome!! And all this from a man raised w/all sisters by a stay at home mom who did EVERYTHING for him! I didn't try to change him - honest! He has just 'evolved' over time! :)
I'm keeping him!!

Cindy, The feet penguins are so cute!! Great idea!! Glad you're out of the hospital. Give yourself some time to get your energy back.....make sure to rest when your body says it needs a break.

Adorable little feet! What a cute idea! And so much work!! Your love for these kiddies show......I hope the Parents know how lucky they are to have you caring for their children.

So sorry you have been ill. Congrats on Jim's retirement - well earned! Jim sounds like he is keeping busy even if he isn't sewing - haha - we don't really want that anyway.

Stay well.....and hope to see you in September.

What a clever idea. They turned out just adorable. I know everyone was thrilled.
Sorry things a going slow but it sounds like it's going to get better sooner then later. Keep looking for that energy it can turn up in the strangest places........
