Vinyl pool liners (pvc) and health concerns
Comments (8)Currently, phthalates are used to create the extreme plasticity of all vinyl pool liners. Phthalates can be absorbed through the skin and are commonly known to be associated with various cancers and endocrine/hormonal disruptions. All pool linings for any type of pool ultimately get worn down by the mechanism used (chemicals, salts, minerals) to keep the water clean. Whatever is lining your pool will ultimately end up in the water. If that includes phthalates then they're being absorbed by whoever is swimming in the pool. Something I read once but, haven't confirmed: "it only takes about 3 grams or so of plastic to start affecting the human endocrine system." I don't know if that's true, but when my daughter was barely 7 she was tested and diagnosed with precocious puberty. Her endocrinologist thought she'd finish by 9. After extensive research, I ended up ditching all our food plastics, clothing plastics, and personal products with any kind of plastics, and no longer let her swim in vinyl pools. Her numbers indicating puberty went down slowly over the years and now she's 10 and still hasn't started her cycle yet. We use plastics in moderation now and still want a pool, but we're going with concrete, probably with a fiberglass lining so we can do saltwater and avoid the excess chlorine. It is more expensive so we have to save for an extra couple of years, but the price of the alternative risks being so much higher....See MoreWater color with different liners--vinyl pool.
Comments (4)Thanks gals for the help. This picture (link) I posted is actually kind of off on the monitor. The liner I linked is truly more of a tan color than gray. I wish I could find a better picture. Does anyone know what color the water would be with a tan colored liner. Georgiapoollover--I am seriously considering the same liner you chose. The tile color doesn't go very well with my house (sounds silly huh?), but I love how the gray walls make your water look. This is an absurdly difficult decision :-) Thanks!...See MoreConcrete Wall and floor on vinyl IG pool
Comments (2)I replace liners in pools with steel walls that are 20plus yrs old with no problems all summer long. The bottoms are mostly done with a sand cement mix. The rusting over the lights is the pool nitch itself not the outside. Most builders are useing plastic nitches now so this is not a issue. Price a replaster of a gunite or a new liner that may help you decide also.. Concrete walls seems like a lot of overkill to me.....See MoreGunite vs. Steel Vinyl Liner with High Water Table
Comments (15)The well point is at the deepest end of the pool. Be careful installing one. A hydrostatic valve might work better. Sometimes depending on what is surrounding your property if you are constantly pumping water out from under your pool you could also be pumping water from underneath other structures. Many times the water is what is supporting the structure. If you dry soil out than your soil will fail. That's how sink holes happen. Consult a soils engineer and do some testing before you install a pool. I have a soils report done before I even finalize a bid on a project. He can tell you what type of soil you have so you can appropriately design the engineering for your pool. It's cheap insurance. Hope this helps....See Morepoolguynj
