There are pluses and minuses. I have slept in '80s brass beds, 1880s brass beds, and a more modern wrought iron bed. Here are some things to think about. - Metal beds originally became popular as a precaution against bedbugs. Bedbugs hide in wood furniture, so if you get an infestation simply replacing the mattress won't suffice. For most of my life, bedbugs were a quaint old affliction remembered only in good-night sayings. However, they are now back in a big way. If you travel at all, your luggage can carry bedbugs from a hotel (even a very nice hotel) right back to your own bed. If so, you may have to treat or replace the mattress but at least your bed will be easy to sanitize. - You need to plan out where your head goes. Banging your skull on metal is unpleasant. That means you need good-sized pillows for sleeping and extra fluffage for reading. And yes, pillows do have a tendency to slip behind the bed. - I found it pleasant to touch the cool metal with my hands when I was warm in bed. It sounds like nothing, but it actually made a difference in comfort . - By all means get a well-made bed if you go metal. Cheap metal beds flex and move and bend even more than cheap wooden ones. A poorly made bed will make you feel like you are sleeping in a lifeboat on open seas.

Debra, I stay away from most minis now. They don't do well here between my past lack of watering, extensive tree roots, and hordes of terrorist squirrels. I received Golden Threads in a trade last summer, and the squirrels killed it in a couple weeks. I think the smallest one I have now is Mighty Mouse, purchased from a club auction: Yellow Boa has also managed to hang on (this pic is a month old, nothing recent): Oh yeah, Radiant Star is smaller this year. Combination or poor location and being planted a little deep after the squirrels dug it up, it's also being moved tomorrow:

We recently moved into a home where there's a flower bed enclosed on all sides by concrete (See picture). We noticed that quite often the bed gets waterlogged. In digging deeper, we found that the two gutters drain to a single popup emitter (see red arrows). I am suspecting that due to the stone flower bed edging, the popup emitter is discharging the storm water back into the flower bed causing it to get water logged. Looking for some creative solutions on how i can get better drainage in the flower bed? Thanks! picture of flower bed

I wonder if you might be better off to buy a bed frame, mattress and box spring from a well known company that specializes in them, and then a separate headboard? Then you could be sure to get one that isn't too low, and you'd have a huge selection of headboards. If you choose a tall one, I think it would be best on a wall with no windows, so it would be the star, and could be centered on the wall. I used to have a king-size bed and didn't care for it and it wasn't fun to make it up. I switched to a queen and like it much better, and my 3 dogs fit in it, too, every night... :-) I don't know the size of your doorways, but you might need a split box spring to get a king in the room. I did, as my bedroom is on the second floor, and we couldn't turn the corner at the top of the stairs. We had to FOLD the mattress and tie it up tightly with rope to get it up and into the room. Measure carefully!
