Combos with Heliopsis 'Summer Sun' - Ideas?
Comments (6)Take it from anArtist--the complimentary color of yellow is mauve and the color next to yellow on the color wheel is orange who's complimentary color is blue. Since many blues are mauve based those 3 colors work well together. In fact I have a bed that contains those colors plus variations of those colors and it looks good. I tend to go for long blooming or reblooming perennials Goblin Gillardia has large orange red daisy like flowers tipped in yellow. It grows 12 to 18 inches tall. I have stella de oro day lilies and a peach one called mini pearl t6hat are both reblooming I have correopsis moonbeam which has small lemon yellow daisy like blooms and feathery foliage. I have tulips for spring planted in clumps in the bed and I surround them with annual purple petunias The petunias spread out and cover the space where the bulbs are that would otherwise be bare after the foliage goes. I have long leaf veronica with it's spikes of purple flowers I have annual forget-me-nots that reseed themselves. Along the edge I have a variety of blue and white carpathian bellflowers called clips It is interspaced with a low growing purple aster. The clips bloom first followed by the asters which bloom into fall. As you can see it is a rather big bed and you may not be able to use all of these but I hope you can find some you can use...See MoreNew Pictures of The Backyard Daylily Garden Planted Last Year
Comments (10)If you are planning perrenials in between, you more or less have to leave the room as the daylilies will crowd out the other flowers. This only works in all daylily sections in my opinion. I didn't crowd them like this in my mixed beds but instead spaced them far apart and put in annuals in between. But you could do them in clusters and later when they fill in too much you could move the middle one. This is just my idea and the close spacing goes against conventional wisdom. I have been gardening for a very long time and beaking the rules most of that time. You should see my rose gardens. Planted really, really close and some I have had that way for 4 years already. Needs more plunning but works for me. My yard is also not big and I refuse to waste space....See Moregood news on shrubs from last year

Comments (11)Here's an update on where I left this left bed as of Wednesday. Over the last couple weeks, I moved a few existing hostas and added a few more for green or chartreuse color. Decided not to worry about overcrowding, what with the tree root competition. Still need to trim the azalea encroaching on the left to bring in a little more light. New hostas are Lakeside Shore Master (top left corner), Lakeside Down Sized (front to right of Touch of Class), Heat Wave (front to right of that), my mutant Giantland Mouse Cheese (right side past Halcyon), and Little Treasure (front right corner)....See MoreEleven
