New Pictures of The Backyard Daylily Garden Planted Last Year

Well, last year I put in that big raised daylily bed in the backyard that I call the Plateau. It is almost all evergreen and semi evergreen daylilies and most of them came from Maryotts in repeated orders over last summer until I got it full.

I also did some work in back of the garage last year and put in the little fountain garden last year. All these gardens were pictured, along with pics as they were planted, in my post BackYard Daylily Garden, Work in Progress.

Boy what a difference less than a year makes. Those gardens look really good now.

Looking toward the back of the garage and the little fountain garden put in last year. It really looks good with the daylilies leafed out and grass planted in the path. Last year the daylilies were not that leafed out and I could not get any grass to grow in the path because of all the foot traffic there due to all the working.

To the right are my row of blueberry bushes. To the left you can see some of my veggie garden and my tomato plants. You can also see the row of the pavers talked about in another thread here. I put them completely around the veggie garden section earlier this spring. The veggie garden section is like a giant rectangular island in the middle part of the upstairs part of my yard.

The Plateau is different done differently from the daylily gardens I did this spring. Other gardens done this spring are a combination of daylilies and other flowering things. The plateau is just daylilies. The only other thing in there are some tulips and daffodils towards the back. Those I put in for spring color and they will be long gone by the time daylily bloom season comes around here in July. I wanted the look of nothing but mass daylilies in bloom for this raised area in the back of my backyard.

I can't imagine how much time it took to plant all those daylilies, let alone everything else. It is wonderful.

I can see this year just with the small amount of bloom there first year that this iris bed will be just stunning given time. The entire middle backyard that I made last year out of what used to be my veggie garden has just turned out so well. I have all those daylily sections, some with new ones and the late bloomers section that I moved over to the back. Then I just added lilies this spring. And I had spring bulbs in there and intend to add more this fall. The Dutch Iris section has lots of bloom stalks so should be lovely. The entire thing has turned out well even if I was complaining this spring that the iris section wasn't growing. It is doing better than I first thought and the Dutch Iris in there do add lots of color.

I agree with all of you that these guys are so much fun to watch! I'm sure the hummers being chased off have a different opinion, but, at least in the case of my backyard, they do have other nearby options. My neighbor to the north has a rose of sharon at the corner of her house nearest mine, and I did not see my little sentry chase other birds off until they entered my yard. The neighbor also has some sort of bright orange trumpet vine growing along the back fence at the side farthest from me. So, even though the sentry wouldn't let them in my yard there were still other food options only a few yards away. I do have several of the plants most of you mention. I planted four o'clocks behind the house this year. They haven't gotten very tall, but they are blooming. I also have Grandpa Ott morning glories on a 6'x6' trellis intended to shade my air conditioning unit. I have some Cardinal Climber, at least that what I asked Horn for when I bought seeds, although the leaves are not like the original Cardinal Climber I grew. These have palm frond-like leaves. However, these don't bloom much until/unless I abuse them. If I start cutting them back severely they'll start making blooms, otherwise they just grow foliage all over everything around. I haven't tried petunias since I moved into the house. I did grow them in containers, whisky barrels, on the patio at my apartment, but they always withered and died when hot summer temperatures arrived. Maybe they would do better though now that I can plant them in the ground. Of course, the problem with all these is they don't bloom until either late spring or summer whereas the hummingbirds generally arrive in Oklahoma in late March. It does sound like the cross vine Dawn mentioned might be just what I'm looking for, and I would love to plant some native red honeysuckle. Now I just have to find out where I can get them and figure out where they might grow in my yard. Unfortunately, my backyard gets a lot of shade due to tall evergreens that line the entire perimeter. Dawn, how much shade would the cross vine tolerate? Any idea where I might be able to buy some? Also, anyone know where I might find the native honeysuckle? And how much shade the honeysuckle would tolerate? I may have to get creative and figure out a spot to set an arched arbor or something similar just out in the middle of the yard for one of these. The fence from my house to the south property line gets sun in the morning and has a large evergreen branch that was seriously bent by the ice storms in Dec. 2007 that needs to come down. If I cut that branch off it would probably reduce the shade that piece of fence gets during the later afternoon. Might that be enough sun for one of these two vines to be reasonably happy? Thanks for all the suggestions. If you think of more, please let me know. While I'm specifically trying to figure out early spring bloomers for the hummingbirds, eventually I wouldn't mind digging up most of my yards and replacing the weeds with flower beds of various types. Not only would that be more colorful and fragrant, but it would cut down on the mowing. :D Debra

This country is so into an over abundance of laws in all areas of modern life. It is becoming impossible to be a law abiding person. We can't keep track of them all. I just learned that it was $150 fine for not turning ones brights off accidently. This concept of changing to a white list was supposed to be for nurseries shipping in and out between Canada and the USA. All natives were not on the white list. So there was to be no trade of native between countries. What was weird about that white list was that Whole plant families were Xed off of the White list for no reason at all and only 12th of known plants were on it. It had only the normal trade type plants and nothing very unusual. I took Sally Waszowskis book on gardening with Texas natives and over 2/3 of the plants mentioned were not on the list. I looked and many invasives were on the list. It was crazy. I am amazed that this concept of White list versus Blacklist is becoming the norm. One gets lost in the detail and can not focus on the true problem plants. I am really concerned that I won't be allowed to grow my natives. It was not originally to be turned on the populous but be a import export vehicle. A way to control the professional growers. I agree, it seems so arbitrary , so draconian and unenforceable. We are now all possible criminals. Guilty till proven innocent. That Ruella (chi Chi ) is a monster. I got hit in the I eye by some seeds. I won't be sad to see that one go. Some plants should have warning labels. The fact that we make plants illegal that are inhabitants of this world shows how nuts we have gotten.

Me, too! Your post reminded me that this was the year I wanted to clear the hill and plant climbing hydrangea on our chain link to hide the neighbor's spite fence. :) Sigh, my yard will never be as lovely as yours, so keep the photos coming! I will live vicariously!

I vividly recall your pics from last season, right after you'd planted all of those new fans. You must be loving all that beautiful green foliage! Absolutely fabulous job on the whole garden. The little pond is so cute. Keep posting pics as everything progresses.

I planted three large pots of Purple Coneflowers right by the end wall up on the plateau to make a splash.

I weeded it so here it is. Nothing near blooming although there is a scape here and there showing up.

Oh my goodness, Rita, that daylily bed looks awesome now -- and just wait until it is in bloom! I can hardly wait to see the pics.

Hi Rita,

Just wanted to say WOW! I love seeing all of those daylilies together like that as that is what I'm going to be doing this week.
Although mine won't be in such a high raised bed there will be a section of perennials with a few daylilies and a section with pretty much only daylilies...
I was wondering when you planted those daylilies last year how far apart did you place them?
I've heard that they should be around 18 inches apart.
Your's look closer together, so I was just wondering.

Yes, they should be 18 inches apart. Some of mine up there are 8 inches apart, others 12. One of the reasons it looks so full this year even though it was planted last year.

On all my new daylilies planted this year I have them spaced between 16 to 24 inches. But I have made those areas mixed gardens. This plateau is just daylilies and I wanted an effect like that with no large spaces of mulch or annuals in between. It probably was not the best way to do it and I will have to divide them quicker but we will see how it all turns out.

I was just wondering because I've got around 90 daylilies to incorporate into some new beds this week.
I loved the look of your new 'Plateau'.
I live in northcentral Manitoba, Canada ( USDA Zone 2-3) so I don't think all of these daylilies will multiply quite as fast as some of those southern US zones.
I don't like the look of alot of mulch between plants for several years and don't have a huge yard either.
I think I'm going to copy you and put them alittle closer for the 'daylily only' bed and see what develops.

If you are planning perrenials in between, you more or less have to leave the room as the daylilies will crowd out the other flowers. This only works in all daylily sections in my opinion. I didn't crowd them like this in my mixed beds but instead spaced them far apart and put in annuals in between.

But you could do them in clusters and later when they fill in too much you could move the middle one.

This is just my idea and the close spacing goes against conventional wisdom. I have been gardening for a very long time and beaking the rules most of that time. You should see my rose gardens. Planted really, really close and some I have had that way for 4 years already. Needs more plunning but works for me. My yard is also not big and I refuse to waste space.
