Unintended consequences....... Oh, my. OJ messed up, but I'm not really understanding all the issues. Guess I'll keep rereading the post and maybe more of it will sink in. OK. The plan is to build a 9by14 GH on the south side of my home with a window that will open to the house to help with temp control in winter months only. Because a fireplace burns in the house pretty much all winter, the house is VERY dry. I did not anticipate the additional humidity would create serious problems. Do you think the window opening or the house siding could lead to the type of damage OJ talks about? I would love to keep the GH warm enough for tomato plants to survive the winter, but may add extra insulation around the tomato to limit the space that gets the higher temps. I brought a container in from the garden with a grape tomato in it. It sits in front of what will be the window into the GH. The tomato started blooming first of Feb. My experiment this year is to take cutting, with blooms, from that plant to root. Just trying to see if the blooming cuttings result in an earlier production of fruit. If so, I'll plan on keeping choice tomato plants going all winter. I LOVE homegrown tomatoes! Paul Robson is my most favorite of all time.

Hi Kevarose some of the suggestions are great - I especially liked Garry's idea of Buff Beauty or Phyllis Bide. I am looking out my window at the ferral rose garden and had another idea. What about climbing Softie? She is normally shown as small - to about 1.5m, but mine has grown to the top of a pine pole (about 3m)and I once saw one that was about three times the size!! She is constantly in flower with sweet lemon blooms which are fully double and fade to white. Not that I can actually see her - Lamarque has smothered her! I'll atempt a rescue mission on the weekend. Softee is a climbing minature and so could be planted on the side of the structure so she could almost 'sit' on the roof. Softee s thornless!! and does not have 'canes'. Her growth habit is like an everyflowering rambler - which is what that think you are asking for. Another climbing miniature I have read about is Golden Garden. Though she has canes 'Penelope' the hybrid musk is a perfect colour and has the advantage of lovely hips in autumn/winter - her growth is similar to Buff Beauty. Cheers Deryn

Oh thanks so much, everybody, for helping me through this little mystery! I neglected to report back on the brand new sheet that I washed as an experiment: with the Twindos at its regular setting (14ml for white, I think,) the gasket looked suds-free at the end. I've been adding a rinse using the app, and it does seem that everything is back to normal. Some things needed to go through hot/ Sanitize washes more than once, with an extra rinse.I haven't tried STPP yet, because I think it's OK without. We'll see. Jerrod, I'll try bumping it down if the problem persists. I never considered our water super soft--at least I don't hear people complaining about it here. It's just city water. I know it's on the lower end of "hard," whatever that means. Thanks for the tip. It must be challenging with 14 gpg! And Jenny, glad to hear you've survived the snow. The Lysol product's active ingredients are quaternary disinfectants. You could buy a gallon jug of quats at Menard's, etc., to treat the laundry--in a top loader. I would soak for the requisite time, spin out and then run the laundry in a regular cycle with detergent. Since the objective is to kill odors & bacteria & virus, just kill them at the get-go, then launder to avoid having residual product left on your clothing. I'm going to guess that buying a gallon jug of quaternary disinfectant is going to be a lot cheaper in the long run. I have a couple of gallons of it around that I've found at garage sales. Useful stuff to have around for exterior use if you live where you have lots of rain/ humidity.
