Curtain Length Help

Ok,finally will be moving into our new home. I started cleaning today. All of the upstairs is done, so I decided to hang the curtains in the bedroom. Heres a picture, I know they need to be hemed but not sure what length. I was thinking floor length. Do I want them to skim the floor or be shorter than that? Dont want them to look like high waters. Or should they be just under the window sill? The photo isnt the best. The curtains are a cream and tan check from JCP. Thanks for any help.

Congratulations on your new home! Full length curtains would look great at your windows. Whether you hem them to just break, or have them billow on the floor is a personal preference. if you have kids and pets I would hem them so they just break when they hit the floor. If you think of a pair of pants that are perfectly hemmed, they have a slight break in the line of the pant; that's the same idea for hemming curtains that just break.

I am not a decorator but here is my 2 cents. Pin them up, one floor length and one window sill length. Look at them for a couple days then decide. I like curtains to the floor but that's just my personal preference not what a designer might say.

Mine is a little above the enclosure, and a bit of tub sticks out. I think it's normal, but honestly I'm just so happy to be rid of those nasty sliding doors I really don't care!

To follow what Annie is saying... basically it all depends on your windows and personal tastes. I do not prefer the curtain rod to be almost at the ceiling, but that's my opinion. My ceilings are 8ft and I have 84" curtains. The rods are hung about 2-4" (depending on whether I was using grommet vs curtains on rings) above the window casing and about 6in wide on each side. My curtains come to just above my shoe molding, which is too short for many here, but I didn't want them touching the floor. IMO, when the curtain rod is all the way at the ceiling, it loses some of it's relationship with the window. Of course, there are examples I've seen that I like, but I don't think the curtain rod at the ceiling is right for every window.

If you don't want roman shades, you can just do draperies to the floor. The baseboard heater is fine there. All my drapes cover my baseboard heat, and your heater is only under the window. I usually place my rods halfway between the ceiling and the top of the window trim. If buying ready made drapes that are either 84, or 96, you can use rings and drapery hooks on the 84 length, to add more length, and place rod accordingly so that the drapes are just shy of touching the floor. In terms of where you would place the rod brackets, I usually go 3-4 inches outside the outer edge of the window trim. If your curtains are not that full, go 2-3 inches away. You want the leading edge of the drapes to just come to the glass and not obstruct the view.

Place the curtain rod so that it extends at least four inches on each side of the window's frame. To create the illusion of a wider window, extend the rod even further. Make sure you have enough panels so that the curtains look full and not skimpy - multiply the rod length by 1.5 for minimum fullness, 2 for medium fullness, and 2.5 for an extra full look.

I like them full length! I hem mine that they "kiss" (barely touch) the floor so they still hang straight.

You know, if you raised the rod you wouldn't have to hem the drapes at all.

I think it depends on what kind of privacy the room requires, if the curtains will be mostly opened or closed and if those are the actual curtains you intend to use. I think a bench under one of those windows would be perfect. I'd have short curtains or none at all. The wall wood is beautiful and I'd show it off wherever possible. terriks solution is an excellent one if you decide to keep those curtains and at full length.

Thanks for everyones help. I have decided to hem the curtains to floor length.
The idea of raising the rod, so I dont have to sew, is a good idea but wont work because the rod is to the ceiling already. Probably hard to tell with all the wood.
Will post when the room is done.
