I-5 and Hwy 15 come together a little southeast of San Diego. As they each go north, they spread apart -- I-5 heads in a westerly direction, and Hwy 15 more easterly.

Thanks. I was looking on Google maps but I was looking north of San Diego, not at all south. And from where I was looking, I couldn't see them meeting at all.

My DH and my dad are in Del Mar this weekend at a car show. They're driving home tomorrow and was asking about Hwy 15, although I'm not sure why when hwy 5 is right there. Maybe they thought hwy 15 was a short cut but it doesnt look like it.

No, it's not a shortcut to get back to where you are. But, if they're going to go up 15, they should stop and do some wine tasting in Temecula!

What town is Home??? I-5 goes N & S,but there are all kinds of hwys that go off in different directions from that.

They wont be leaving until probably late afternoon (my dad got an award so they have to wait until after the awards are over to leave) so they'll be driving home late otherwise they probably would stop. Thanks for the recommendation though!

It looks like you could head up Hwy 15 to Barstow then take Hwy 58 west, getting you to Hwy 5 in Bakersfield. That would be out of their way though. They should stick with 5.

Kathi, we're in Pleasanton (SF Bay Area - well, more East Bay).

If you head up 15, then 58, that gets you to Bakersfield. Might be a tad longer, but whole lot less traffic. Just watch for the signs at Barstow. 58 is mostly 4 lanes now,lots of truck traffic but good roads and it bypasses Mojave now--big freeway in that area. Make sure he fills with gas, as there is not much between Barstow and Bakersfield. Go to Google Earth or Earth Google--can't remember which. Great directions. You can pick up 5 out of Bakersfield or stay on 99 to 146 and then go across to 5. Just watch for traffic on 146 especially at night. Two lanes and interesting drivers, but we use to take it all the time with the thruck and trailer.

If you stay on 5 from San Diego, it will be heavy traffic right thru Los Angeles. That is why we always took the 15 to 58

YES! SD is a popular weekend spot, so there should be congestion, whether 5 or 15. I remember thinking I was being so clever as to avoid the Hwy 5 congestion and going over to 15, only to be in gridlock for what seemed like hours, for no apparent reason (no accident or cops around). I seem to remember that the commuter lanes in SoCal being 24/7, so it even may make more sense for them to go 405 all the way through LA via commuter lanes and meet up with 5 at the northern end (I did the reverse with my nephew a few years ago -- clear sailing all the way). Hwy 5 commuter lanes go into LA and then end for most of LA. I could be wrong...any LA folks out there? In any case, as Hwy 5 would be better than 15.

Another way is stay on 5, to 57 to 405. Stay in HO lanes, as long as 2 people in car.Just watch the signs. Near Pasadena watch for signs to Sacramento, stay in right hand lane no problem, except of one area with incoming traffic in Glendale area.Don't go on the 134. Forgot about that. That does put you on 5 outside of traffic, and yes there will be traffic until you get pass LA.
