Blades for Rotary cutters question

Are blades for rotary cutters specific to their own brand? I have a very old style Fiskars 45mm rotary cutter that is starting to give me problems. I have purchased blades for this cutter - too many to waste. If I buy another brand cutter, same size - will the blades fit without a problem?

My first ratary cutter was an Olfa...very small blade. I bought a 45 Fiskars and love it. I also have a Fiskars 65 and use it quite often as well. The only problem with it is, I can not find the blades at too many places. I look for them when I am in Illinois for my family reunion each August. I have never found them here in Canada although I purchase it at WalMart on clearance. Speaking of WalMart, I was into the closest store today and they are closing the fabric dept. I was very surprised at that because they are putting an addition on the store and turning it into a Super Walmart. I spoke to the saleslady and she didn't think that they were going to put fabric in the new store. I got some great deals but will certainly miss it. I went to the next closest store later on in the afternoon and asked if they were closing the dept and the saleslady said she didn't think so since they were always busy. I guess I will just have to wait and see. Mary

I have a sharpener, but I rarely use it. I usually screw up my rotary blades through clumsiness, LOL. I miss a pin on the cutting mat and run over it with the blade, or I hit the blade on the ruler. If you are really, really careful with your blades, and they are simply dull, the sharpener can get you a few more days, but it will NEVER polish out a nick in the blade. You must also, for best results, use them before the blade is actually dull. Eh, I'm cutting strips for a quilt, the blade is working, and I'm not going to get out the sharpener, the oil, and the paper towels to contain the mess. It's basically the same procedure as stropping the cut-throat straight razors your grandfathers probably used. They probably stropped the razor before every shave. That was his face, so he was probably pretty motivated to keep that razor sharp. I know rotary blades are expensive, but I can cut pieces for maybe two or three quilts before my blade is dull. If I haven't actually nicked the blade, I will use the sharpener, but it's never as good as a fresh unused blade. I keep a spare cutter with an old, duller blade for cutting batting and paper.

Hi Sue. I called Fiskars and they're going to send out a new washer. They have to mail it to my brother in NC, because they don't mail to Canada, and then he will mail it to me. After dinner, I'll post a pic of a bag on a new thread.

Hi Mary A friend recommended me a fantastic new brand, I ordered them a week ago and I will never look back again. They are inexpensive for the quality and product that you receive. The brands name is Improved Cut. You will have to buy them off Amazon.com which was fine for me as it offers prime which means that if you order $35 or more they give you free lighting speed delivery. So I just ordered three to stock up anyway. The blades only cost $15.97 for a 10 pack and the quality both my friend and I agree that they cut better than OLFA's replacement blades. And don't worry they come in a plastic container so the blades will be safe for storage and disposal. I have an older Fiskars rotary cutter.

I buy my blades from GHittle. Right now he has generic blades, which I find to be as good as any name brand, on sale at 10 for $14.90. That is $1.49 each. He also carries other sizes. Check his Specials. Since you do pay a small postage fee, you should be able to find some really good buys to make it worth while. I use their blades and share them with friends, then I buy their pins and bobbin genie and other items.

I have never been dissatisfied.

Is GHittle the guy that had bades on Ebay??? If so, I had a problem both times I ordered.Half the blades had knicks in them. Ive heard pros and cons...

has a business in Kentucky. I doubt that he sells on eBay, but you can check the name. This man is reputable. How does one know who these people are on eBay??? I sure don't know.

I buy from this one all the time. His blades are NEW and I have never encountered any problems. I have bought them about 4 times now. No Problems.

I think the ebay guy was named jnockles. I can't seem to find him now. I bought 10 blades from him about 2 years ago and still have a couple left. They were like a 1.90 a piece if I recall and very good quality.

Yes, it is Jnockles, Rebecca. I have bought several lots of 20 (45mm) blades from him and just ordered 20 more. They are now $1.99 each and he only charges $1.50 to ship them. Like Rebecca, I have always found his blades to be of excellent quality. I have his place on ebay bookmarked, so will list it here. There is no picture for the blades, but you will see the entry if you scroll about 1/2-way down the page.

I visited Hittle to see what he charges and found that though his blades are cheaper than Jnockels and his site is very nice and he has a lot of things to offer, he seems to be charging more than $6 for shipping and handling. This puts the cost of his blades at, if I remember correctly, just a tiny bit more than Jnockels. Not saying whose blades to buy, just that it pays to check on the S&H for anything we buy on line.
