LOL

We went sand dollar collecting on Sunday afternoon in a downpour. Here they are.. just got done with the first rinse, need to dry and wash again. takes a while to clean them up.

No LIVE sand dollars were harmed in an effort to get this picture! We "pick" only dead ones!

Great picture!
All the sand dollars on our beach are broken.
Sounds like a lot of fun if the wind wasn't blowing and the rain was gentle.

it's like any other display - -clothing with all the 'right' pieces & accessories that you may not want/to be able/interested to buy... -furniture, again with all the right accessories... -you buy just one or very few-and it doesn't look the same! But it's great for ideas/inspiration, and definitely helps the sales. And you just may be able to replicate over time...

I did a quick bit of slug research and found these little tidbits that I had not seen before. - Grapefruit, slugs love it and will choose it over your plants. (Sounds like an opportunity for a "bait and salt" to me.) -Oat bran, slugs love it but once eaten it expands till they die - Slugs hate mint, geraniums, fennel and garlic -soot sprinkled around the base of plants will kill slugs by drying them out - a squirt of ammonia diluted with water will kill them Then of course there are the slug eaters such as Starlings, toads, ducks, chickens etc. Those moist mild winters do increase the populations. Freezes have to be tough to get them. Oh and by the way, fish love to eat them. Of course your not likely to have fish hanging around your flower beds but you can toss them in the pond if you have one. Well, I'm off to spread some oat bran and feed the fish.

Stacy, We probably are the same age--did you graduate from Sulphur? I know what you mean about loving that part of the country--there is no place like it. I only moved away because my husband was in the AF--I met him when he was stationed at Alexandria with my cousin. There is a "feel" to that area that I haven't felt anywhere else but maybe that was because I was born there. I miss it. I drove to Galveston once--that was a big thing for me because I have an irrational fear of being on the water--and I rode the ferry over--I was so proud of myself for driving my car onto the ferry!! Jali, when I emptied my rain gauge on Wednesday it had 1.4” in it. When I emptied it yesterday morning it had another 2.4” in it! Flood of '65, indeed! I emailed Barb last nite to let her know I had arrived safely—tense, but safe—and I mentioned the Flood of '65 to her! She's not old enough to remember it, but I am! It rained, like this time, for a week or whatever and everything was saturated—and then, like you said, it DUMPED and that was all they wrote! All the bridges in/out of Denver on the west side of town but ONE washed out, including one that was just a couple years old and had been built for a “500-year flood!” I have pics of a span of that bridge laying in the middle of the Platte! Huge sections of I-25 and the train tracks between Denver and the Springs washed out! I still have the newspapers from right after it with all the pics! But I hadn't stopped to think that this was the 50th anniversary of it!!! Cherry Creek Dam was still new back then, and there was near panic on the news that it was going to break—they were releasing water as fast as they could. I lived in an apartment about a half a block from Speer and we were listening to the radio so we'd know when to RUN—and then the power went out! I'm still here—so, no, it didn't break! And 25th anniversary of the Limon tornado! Wow! Some years to remember! Guess you remember that one well! What I remember was I was watching TV weather and all of a sudden the radar went down! Switched channels, and no radar! Switched again—nobody had radar anymore! That's when we knew it was “serious!” If the Limon radar was wiped out—what else in Limon was wiped out! Wasn't long and the channels were picking radar up from the airport, and that's when most of them switched to doppler! Memories! I've been watching Denver radar today, and the forecast, and at least it looks like this is about the end of it for right now, so, hopefully, no repeat of '65! they are interesting, can't say i ever saw one other than a magnet from some souvenier (spelling) shop. live????

what i am interested in is that small plant right behind them. is that a sedum of some sort? did you plant all them or did it spread? i love it.

Love those sand dollars. I have one under glass (for protection). I always thought they were few and far between. I guess not.

Oh, I have an art project in mind for some art on the wall.. then not sure what to do with the rest! Still a lot of clean up! then boiling and bleaching! lol

The green plant is a spurge, and the purple is the dollar plant.. I think that is the name.. or silver dollar...

the spurge was planted in another spot, and the seeds POP! all over and far away! So it has travelled since my Dad gave me 2 from his yard. Have to be careful because a different spurge is considered a noxious weed in this area. Thankfully this one is not!

Oh Kat, love--love--love Sand dollars- My biggest find is 6" by 6" in Treasure Is Fl! I used to hang them on my Xmas tree!

Not too many Sand Dollars to be found........here in Iowa....LOL...No salt water beaches either...

Our Sand Dollars are the size of a Silver Dollar, not that big.

Kat, last time we went to Pacific Beach the kids gathered about that many.
We thought nothing of it, they were dead.
Do you know it's illegal to collect more than 10? It's in the fish and game book! OOPS! Another stupid rule from Olympia!

My aunt (cousin Barbara's mother) made some lovely Christmas ornaments from sand dollars. She painted them with a light wash of gold (or perhaps she rubbed a gilt coating on them?). On some, she painted the tiny design that's in the center. The natural design looks like poinsettias, and she painted it red. They were really beautiful.

Oh my gosh!! And here I thought Sand Dollars were rare! I've only found one in my lifetime and it got broken and thrown away. What a lucky girl you are Kat!!

Holy cow, Kathy! No kidding? yeah, what a rule! I've seen people stripping the beach at Mukilteo (when we lived up htere 15 years ago) of every single living organism.. didn't matter how big the little tiny crab were... stripped the beach.. I hope there are regulations about THAT now! lol of course, they wouldn't know, like I didn't know.. guess I will have to review the regs! lol

The live ones are buried in the sand (most of them) and they are dark.. ours are purple, and they are "hairy", and heavy. The dead ones also have a hole in the bottom.. the lives ones don't.. well, it's sealed up

Yes it is stupid Kat! But, they are listed in the "unclassified marine invertabrae" section. We all got a good laugh out of that!
It's a shame people strip the beach, we see it living here on Whidbey all the time. You'll rarely find a shell on West Beach anymore.
Having said that I don't think picking up dead sand dollars hurt a thing. Can't you just see the game wardens taking sand dollars away from kids?!
