Wrap Around Porch-Paint in Front and stain in back
Comments (3)I hate painted decks. Period paragraph. How did the paint "ruin" the wood? I can't find a Behr product called "Renew". Synta/Rustoleum makes "Restore", Behr makes "DeckOver" - was it one of those 2 products? Can you walk from one area to the other directly, ie the paint will have a line where it changes color? That would be jarring, but if you're not worrying about selling before having to do it over, if it doesn't bother you, go for it. If you're rebuilding anyway, why not roof that section over as well? Thus making the entire porch uniform and consistent and solving your long-term problems with repeated sun damage. It also now becomes a porch instead of a deck so painting the wood isn't quite the problem it is for a deck. Otherwise - this is new construction - I always and only use transparent water repellant for exposed deckwork. You should apply that first even if you want to paint anyway - I just stop right there, then there is never peeling ugly paint that has to be scraped off, scraped up, wire-brushed, and sanded away before you can do anything else with the deck....See MoreWrap Around Porch/Roof Line Help
Comments (1)Your split level style doesn't lend itself to wraparound porch. You could add a porch over the bay window section, like this: http://imperfectlypolished.com/2011/08/29/getaway-cabin/ But be aware the roof pitch will be very shallow. If you add a porch here I would advise you to excavate out in front of the current porch and extend the patio or slab out to the end of the new porch and create stairs there to connect the two. You wouldn't be able to walk under the side of the current porch if you tried to connect the two at that point....See More8 inch or 10 inch columns on our wrap around porch?! Help me decide!!
Comments (14)I think that older farmhouses often had smaller posts on porches - i.e. just enough to hold up the roof. I like the smaller posts - they work, they are not wasteful, and din't block the views. They also allow you to double up the 2 on either side of the front door. I like the simple, square, plain, unadorned columns and they look nice on the rendering....See MoreNeed help placing stairs on front porch on new wrap around deck.
Comments (6)Wow! These renderings are beautiful! I love the stone color with the house. I would love the roof over the porch and keep trying to convince my hubby but probably not. We tore down the old wrap around deck & planned to do it again but I have always loved stone porches. Seeing these ideas helps me to imagine it. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for me. I really do like the steps going off in both directions in the 3rd pic. Just afraid of the cement work cost. Also our land is a bit more sloped than it shows in the pics but these ideas could still be implemented with some tweaks. we definitely have lots of options to consider now. Thanks again. I will try to post updates along the way....See Morepressurepros
