twin comforter at bottom of king bed?

Hello. I have a king-sized bed in my master bedroom. I use a quilt as my main bed cover. I'd like to put a comforter or duvet with cover at the bottom of my bed, folded. However, this will be for decorative purposes only; we will not sleep under it. I wonder if I could use a twin-sized comforter, placed lengthwise across the bed, for this? I'd like to use the smallest size possible (1) to save money on purchasing the comforter/duvet and cover and (2) so that it doesn't take up very much room and isn't too big and puffy. Any ideas? Do you think this would work? Thanks.

I think that this is a wonderful idea!

I collect antique satin comforters -- and always have one folded at the bottom of our queen-sized bed. Even in the summer here in Dallas!

I used to buy the quilted throws at TJ Maxx and keep one folded at the foot of the (queen) bed for the cats to lie on.

Certainly you can do this. I have done this many times in historic houses where neither a King, nor a Queen, will fit up the stairs. I would not do it based on expecting longer service life out of a bedding set, however. The X-Long Twins will break down at the same rate as a standard King, though you are correct that they're easier to flip that way. Shifman makes a "Zippered King" which has two industrial zippers on each side of the matt. When zipped together they are virtually indistinguishable from a standard King. I've been after Royal-Pedic to do the same thing, but they have resisted to date saying not enough customers have asked for this feature. If you do go with a pair of Twin XL's, what you can do is buy extra firm hotel-grade units, put a 3" Latex topper over them, and then tie-in all in with a high-quality mattress pad that has spandex in it. Thanks for all the input. While I know my parents would be OKAY if they HAD to sleep apart, since they use the guest room the majority of the time, I would rather make them more comfortable and let them sleep together. They spend at least one weekend a month here, and often more. Hubby and I have been married for 12 years, and while we would not prefer to sleep apart, I guess we would if we HAD to. Though like someone else mentioned, we'd more than likely just cram ourselves into one twin...which would not be an easy feat since I am currently 35 weeks pregnant and hubby is 6ft2in and 260 lbs! I guess I am trying to be more accommodating to the less often guests (which is probably silly since they ARE less often...) - my MIL and SIL who absolutely REFUSE to share a bed, so SIL ends up on the living room couch which is very disruptive to our family, as we (especially our kids) are early morning risers and she is not. Or for when my single brothers come and visit with their girlfriends, and my conservative house rules indicate you can not sleep together here unless you are married. So brothers get one room and their girlfriends get somewhere else. It could be awkward to make either one of them share a single bed. Thanks for posting the inspiration pic. I'm glad to see you guys think that would work because I think that is the direction we will head. Since it seems like a relatively easy DIY project, we can size it so it fits the two beds and two small nightstands, which could either go in between the twins or outside the "king." I am not sure if we could fit XL twins in that room. I'll have to look at the dimensions. I was thinking we could turn the mattresses to fit the king dimensions, but that wouldn't work unless we had a separate king bed frame, which isnt going to happen. I do plan on buying that foam filler insert thing as well as a nice plush mattress pad to top the two and hopefully hold them together. Now I get to obsess over colors :) I will definitely post pics when done, though it will be a while. This is a new build that HOPEFULLY will be breaking ground later next month.

We went with a full size bed. our DS didn't need it, but Mom and Dad did......He went through a period of needing someone to lay down with him to fall asleep during the night terror times. So we upsized to ensure if we were laying down with him and happened to fall asleep, we might get a couple hours of decent rest, rather than hanging off the side of a twin..... And he loves the big bed, can share with his cousin if they have a sleep over.

Eons ago when we first married, we bought two twin mattresses that were put on a swing out frame at the salesman's suggestion. We knew we would be spending a lot of our first years moving from one apartment to another and using the elevator to move. (This was when kings were new and elevators did not necessarily accommodate a king mattress.) He said that two twins would be easier. It worked well. The twin frames were on a special metal frame that went across the top end of the beds, but you could use twin bottom sheets and the frames would swing out from the together position to let you put the bottom sheets on. Then we slid them together and used a top king sheet. As broke, eloped newly weds, I just sewed twin flat sheets and twin blankets together at first from what we had for the top sheet and blankets. It served us well for many years. When we were finally able to splurge, we bought a king bedspread to make it all look nice.

I actually did this last week. I have a white duvet on a twin bed. I wanted to add a blue throw but couldn't find one in the right shade. Thanks to Home Goods, I found a thin blue twin size Matalasse quilt and folded it down till it reached the end of the bed. It looks great and is exactly what I wanted.

I do that, too. Usually with a throw. Easier to chuck it into the laundry after doggie-napping.

I always have a throw or quilt or some type of cover folded up at the bottom of my king size bed for my puppies to sleep on. It adds color and looks lovely.

Pretty nice having your dogs sleep on the end of the bed. Mine insists on curling up right next to DH's pillow!
Not the look you're seeking, but I'm planning to stuff a queen down comforter into a twin duvet just for the puffiness of it.

I've wondered the same thing before. Do most people use a king size throw at the end of a king size bed or do they typically use a smaller size? Are there any opinions on how far it should come down on the sides? For example, is this typical as far as how long it hangs down on the side or is the way try_hard is planning, with the twin on king, just as popular.

MSROSE: That picture is exactly what I envisioned in terms of how my comforter-at-the-foot-of-the-bed would look. I don't mind that it doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the "real" bedspread.

leahcate - Ours too! lol She (Riley the JRT) hides under our bed and waits until we are settled in the bed. When the lights are off, she then jumps up on the bench, looks around to see if we are asleep, and then jumps up on the bed. She then tries to "snuggle" with DH. He pushes her to my side, and I push her to the end of the bed. She always ends up next to my back. We have a towel we try to put out if we know she will be joining us for the night.

I love the idea of having a throw at the bottom of the bed, but I am afraid DH would strangle me. He is already grumpingly making fun of all the pillows on our bed. But, if I could find something with the gold of my curtains, that may be just what I need to finish the bed side my bedroom (the other side needs major work!).

NHB - oh gosh no, that's not my bedroom. I've posted that picture as the inspiration for my bedroom so many times that I just figured everyone knew by now it wasn't mine. It belongs to HPJ185 at rate my space.
