I chose to get a single, a combi-steam (half size oven), and an Advantium (speed oven, replaces microwave, and is another convection oven). And a toaster for toast. Works great here, but I couldn't manage with less.

The trick with the Microwave-convection combos is whether they work sufficiently well on convection only setting to do all of your tasks. Should be fine for rewarming, casseroles, etc. How well they cook or bake is more problematic. Be sure the model you're looking at will actually do all that it needs to.

Also, be aware of your neighborhood. If it's more luxury homes, or if double ovens are the norm, and the interiors are the biggest difference among the houses, you might be at a disadvantage if you have to sell unexpectedly. If all of the houses are very individual, or single ovens are fairly common, it's not such a big deal.

Yes, I did that -- replaced double ovens and separate microwave with one convection oven and one combo microwave/ convection oven. This has met all of my needs, even during the holidays. And I like that we use both units all of the time. Before, I seldom used the second oven.

I did and don't miss it. Except for, you know, a place to store potatoes.

We did because it was the only way to solve a major flaw in our old kitchen. Our original layout was: fridge, double ovens, 6 inch counter, stove stop, counter corner. There was no counter or landing area on either side of the fridge or double ovens. Only 6 inches between double oven and stove top. It as awful. So we are going with a 36 inch range and have counters between all appliances. Because I do use double ovens at holidays, we splurged and got a Meile speed oven to use as a second or smaller oven.

My only regret is that the double ovens were at a better height for access, and as I get older and more decrepit, bending over to use the oven in the range may be difficult.

I gave up my double ovens to gain counter space to the left of my stove (only had 6 inches between the ovens & stove before). Just have a regular 30" electric now, plus the microwave. I don't miss them. I managed just fine without them at Thanksgiving & Christmas. For me, it was totally worth the trade for more counter space.

I'm struggling with this right now....I am giving up a double oven and thought I was totally fine with it. Of course, the more time that goes by before we actually order the cabinets or buy the appliances, the more I second-guess myself. It appears that most people who have given up the double-oven don't really seem to regret it. I'm investigating the possibility of a range with a warming drawer and maybe a micro/convection above. I think I have to do more research....

The main reason I'm giving it up is because I like the more open look of a regular range along my wall -- the actually space/opening between countertop height and uppers. I'm also moving my fridge so it is out of the way (visually) and doesn't break up that line. Right now my kitchen has a big old refrigerator sticking out from bottom to top, maybe 36" of counterspace, and then my double wall oven sticking out. I hate the look. And budget is, of course, a big consideration so I have to be very careful about my range choice - I can't afford a 36" or especially a 48" range, so trying to make up the size of my double oven won't work there. Again, I'll probably go with a 30" range and a micro/convection above. Off for that research now!

DH is just about ready to pull the trigger to FINALLY build our house. Ugh...at least we have finally relocated and renting.
I have gone over my kitchen plans so many times I am sick.
I am giving up double ovens (traditional) because I don't think I need them. I will probably buy the GE 2-in-1 oven.
It is 30" oven space that contains 2 ovens. The top oven is small but it will give me the extra oven I need on very few occasions. I was going to go with a speed oven but have decided this will be enough for us.
I've also decided I don't need a 36" cooktop. I'll find a nice 30"...leaning towards Caldera at the moment.
I'm also doing an all refrigerator and putting a freezer in the pantry or laundry room.
Of course, the longer DH waits, the more times I may change my mind.
I may have odd tastes/requirements but I think this will work for us. The space allocations can certainly be re-fitted with different appliances if we need to replace anything at some point.

Well, I think you're really smart to go with the GE single/double range. I really wanted a single/double wall oven but GE's version for the wall has two equally sized smaller ovens rather than a larger bottom and smaller top. You'll probably find you're saving on electricity, too, cause you'll use the smaller oven more frequently for casseroles and lasagna pan-type stuff and cookie sheets... plus, being taller, it's more comfortable to reach into.

As far as I know, they are still making the wall unit with the smaller oven on top and the bigger oven on the bottom.
That is the one I am planning on getting.
Caldera would be my cooktop.
I'd thought about a rangetop but with a cooktop I can slide the oven underneath if space becomes an issue.

I have a range and countertop convection-microwave, and I would give anything for real double ovens. I think it completely depends on how you cook, how much you bake, how much you entertain, etc. Think about how you use your kitchen, then decide.

I went the other direction - single oven to double ovens. I am so happy to have the second oven. Admittedly I don't use both every single day, but having both ovens has been such a time saver and makes cooking so much easier. I would never go back to just one oven.

Yikes, Wallycat... Yup, the link worked and I feel like an idiot. I was ignorantly repeating what our KD told me. He showed me the pictures (front only) and steered us toward the GE Profile double wall ovens for that reason. I was foolish for not actually looking into it myself. I guess I didn't think to question or look it up online at the time. I mean, why would a professional say something if he didn't know it was true? I wish that any of the 3 stores we went to had had it on the floor, then I know I would have realized it.

Enjoy your single double oven! I do have one thing to share, if you're thinking about sliding the oven under the cooktop, which I learned for the installation of our electric cooktop. It may not relevant for a gas cooktop, but I'll share it anyway. Be sure to consider how deep the the electronic stuff or other 'guts' are below the cooktop. For example, my KD didn't, and since the electronics on the GE cooktop we selected were deeper than planned for, the carpenters ended up having to modify the drawer immediately under the cooktop by cutting out the right corner. So, now I have a custom "L" shaped drawer.

And, now, I'm off to post about another suspect issue that was just now brought to my attention... I'm hoping this group might be able shed some light on what to think about it.

I gave up my double JennAir wall ovens for a single
range with warming drawer. And I am crazy but I am thrilled
with my choice.

I am not a baker. Sure the holidays come around and I
bake pies, turkey, cookies but the other 360 days of the
year only one oven is needed. Now the warming drawer has
been perfect for the athletes in the house coming home
after practice or warming up some bread with lasagna.
The added counter space I have after getting rid of the
giant elephant has been wonderful.

This is not for everyone. There are many on here who cook,
bake and use their double ovens daily. I only wish they
lived next door so I could eat there.

I gave up my doubles for a single range with a warming drawer. I don't miss my doubles at all - they were 24" & impractical for my cookie sheets & other large pans. I'm loving my 30" oven - with 3 racks, I have so much more room now plus the extra counter space makes a huge difference for me.

Cfire, yikes on your KD....yes, we pay them to know more than us otherwise why bother....sigh.
I think if I put it undercounter, I would offset it so I would not get hot standing next to it and stove.

I have had (in my previous house and my current rental) only a range, which means one oven and agree...360 days of the year it is more oven than I need.

We replaced a range with double wall ovens and a 36 inch induction cook top, even though our kitchen is not large (11.5'x12.5' working area, plus the eating area). We actually gained counter space by replacing a peninsula with an island (30"x@68"), which also opened up previously unusable corner counter space. We do a fair bit of entertaining family and friends, so having two full size ovens is great -- much less scheduling and juggling. On the other hand, I have a friend who raised a family but doesn't cook and never even opens her oven. Her new home has a fabulous open kitchen, but a basic range more than meets her needs:)

I'm with boxerpups -- and not only would I not need a double oven except for once or twice per year, I only use my single oven a few times a month. For regular day-to-day use, I can get most tasks done on the cooktop or in the Breville Smart Oven.

I can't imagine what I would do with double ovens-- except perhaps store pans, or hide chocolate! :) It all depends on how you cook, and what you need.

Like you, we only needed a second oven sometimes, but for that I did want it but gave it up for space reasons. WE now have just a 30" electric and a microwave, but that just requires minor adjustment of holiday/entertaining menus, is all; and I always choose a lot of dishes that can be made in the days ahead, it's just not a problem and I don't miss it. P.S., I'm not a big pastry/bread baker.
