Ed, I am so sorry to hear this. Is there anything that any of us can do for you? Are you at home or with your son? I've been on rat poison for almost three and a half years. So far I haven't grown a tail or am not covered with mouse like hair. One thing, there are many things besides leafy veggies that effect the warfain. They had so much trouble adjusting dosages for me and so many frequent trips to the lab to have the blood tested, that I asked to monitor the food I ate and tabulate the Vitamin K content to help keep it level. They were sure I wouldn't keep doing it but I have for over 1 year now and it has made a huge difference. Vitamin K ( not Potassium) thickens the blood so works against the Warfarin. Mine got out of whack a awhile ago and I didn't know why. I learned that I had eaten quite a few strawberries when they were in season, along with california grapes, and cherry tomatoes and tomato juice. They all had salicylates and I was not aware that the salicylates thined the blood too. If there is anything that I can do to help, even with this information, please give me a call. Did you go to ER by ambulance? You will have to get the INR blood test done quite frequently for awhile, and then probably once a month, if you can keep it level. I don't know where you go, but they are really good at the new lab on Bradley and it might be closer to you than the hospital. If you go shortly before 10 in the morning you miss a lot of the rush of people going before work and the reports go out at 10:30 to the DR.s I understand. My G.P. told me they only get 1 hour of training on the effects of foods. That is very very little. There are a lot of good sights on the net,and if you are able to be on the computer, I can give you some of them. I don't know if your computer is working or if you still were going to the library. You would be surprised the foods that make a difference. All the best and please, please don't take any chances.

ole joyful's experience doing Wordle today Aug. 7
Q
Comments (32)
Another great experience just the other day ... was it while I was in hosp.? Don't remember. First word I tried "wares", as often do, or "swear". "R", third position, was green. "A", second, yellow: correct letter, wrong location. Wanted to try "a" at location 1, so what word would I need with "r" as third letter? Where did "acrid" come from ... sliding into my brain? Let's give it a try. First letter was green, also second, and third was green from the start ... and so were 4 and 5! Comment was something like "Magnificent"! And I was pleased with myself: was it once that I'd ever before got it on second try? Don't remember. By far the largest number of winners on the way to 93% success rate for me is the fourth try. ole joyful P.S. I've had a phone with multiple capabilities for just over four years, so do a lot of stuff using it. Having some problems, and the guys where I got it are trying to get me to pitch it and get a better one (pretty well same price). o j

Mother's Day gift from ole joyful: 28% - 42% return on some your money
Q
Comments (23)
Mother's day has come and gone... so should this thread! I am struggling with some of the statements. I justified the reference to our levels of earnings by saying that most of the stuff that we buy using "credit" cards isn't deductible, so using them isn't going to increase our amount of after-tax cash on hand, which will have an impact on our pre-tax income, as well. Almost none of the things we buy are tax deductible, so this is simply not relevant... because it doesn't change between the alternatives. The only way this becomes relevant is if you are taking money out of your traditional IRA to use for interest payments... So the entire before tax / after tax logic pretzel only works for one specific thing that is not mentioned in the original post. Next, a 28% credit card rate is not equal to a 28% savings rate. This is the difference between compounding interest and effective interest. Even though the two are calculated the exact same way, and compounding is a type of effective, compounding grows but effective interest can shrink. Credit cards are basically rolling installment loans with an 8 year and 4 month payback and no early payment penalty. So the total interest you pay on a $5,000 purchase would be $5,892 over 8.33 years. People will often struggle to convert avoidable interest to investment returns, and most people shouldn't need to do this. The easiest way to do so is by using a version of the Modigliani-Miller theorem. If you want to equate a loan into an investment, then just hypothetically use the loan to purchase the investment and find the interest rate where the total payments on the loan = the total return of the investment. The equivalent investment rate of a 28% credit card, is 9.38%. However, if you are not working with the capital structure of a business, that is pretty useless information. Unless you are borrowing to invest, you should just avoid equating loans to investments. It isn't going to provide useful information. ---- Math questions are best solved with math and not an application of some vague wisdom. Interest is not that hard to calculate, so learn to calculate it. There are times when using your credit card is wise and there are times when it is not. Generally speaking though, balances on high interest credit cards are a symptom of another problem. Typically, either frivolous spending or insufficient income. So, if you can, work on that problem first and the credit card problem tends to fix itself.

Thank you, everyone, for your congratulations and best wishes.

I'd learned that I wasn't restricted to only one or two more tests, but could continue trying (every three weeks or so) until I passed.

Some more info that somewhat relates to this, over on the "Retirement" forum, that may be of interest especially to seniors, coping with some of the restrictions of living as we age.

Do you remember this song by Steppenwolf? As soon as I read your post I started singing it.

"Born to Be Wild"
Written by Mars Bonfire

Get your motor runnin'
head out on the highway
lookin' for adventure
and whatever comes (your) way
Yeah, darlin', gonna make it happen
take the world in a love embrace
fire all of your guns at once and
explode into space

I like smoke and lightnin'
heavy metal thunder
racin' like the wind
and the feeling that I'm under

Yeah, darlin', gonna make it happen
take the world in a love embrace
fire all of your guns at once and
explode into space

Like a true nature's child
we were born, born to be wild
we can climb so high
never gonna die

Born to be wild
Born to be wild

Get your motor runnin'
head out on the highway
lookin' for adventure
and whatever comes (your) way

Yeah, darlin', gonna make it happen
take the world in a love embrace
fire all of your guns at once and
explode into space

Like a true nature's child
we were born, born to be wild
we can climb so high
never gonna die

Yes, I do tend to be loquacious at times (especially when talking about how money works).

But ... I'm not sure that I'm ready to head for Mars, Caroline!

That's some song, though, isn't it?

Congratulations! Just so you realize when it IS time to stop driving. I don't know how old you are, but I'm 79 and have stopped driving because of several diabetic issues. A classmate's son-in-law turned him in for irratic driving and he took some lessons but still didn't pass because he was hugging the middle line.

Actually, when you have to have a 4-year-licensed driver sitting beside you ... and can't drive on the freeway ... and not between midnight and 5 a.m. either ...

... somehow, one gets the feeling that one has arrived at one's second childhood!
