Good Support Summer Shoe take 2

Hi all-

Since I started running last summer, I have developed plantar facsitis (sp?). One of the ways to help is wearing a shoe with good support in the arch/heel. Normally I LIVE in flip flops all summer. So this year, I need to find something inbetween that is still cool & easy, but good support. I found this shoe on Land's End that looked decent? Anyone tried this style or have one to recommend?

It doesn't look like any support in those. Go with the Birkenstocks until your feet heals more.

I love the Lands End sandals. It's just like wearing an open sneaker.

I get mine cheaper by buying the youth sizes. A girl's youth size is equivalent to a ladies size that is 2 sizes larger. So a girl's 5 is a woman's 7, and so on. The youth foot bed is nicer for wider feet also.

Well, I'm a huge crocs fan! They make a ton of styles. Sandals, clogs, non-slip, hiking etc etc. What I love is that they can get wet (nothing worse than a soggy tennis shoe!). But your feet DON'T SWEAT in them (REAL CROCS not the $5 Target ones. They're made of plastic and DO make your feet sweat)!!!!!!! My DH had the stinkiest feet in the world til he started wearing them! They're made out of some sort of vegetable protein (soy????) that doesn't make your feet sweat. I have never tracked my points on a daily basis on CORE. I probably should -- my weight loss has really slowed down in the last 6 weeks. But I did lose 2.4 lbs this week. My typical daily menu -- Breakfast steel cut oatmeal w/ 2 Tbsp. raisins and 1/2 c milk Snack Apple or banana Lunch 2 eggs scrambled with mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, spinach and FF cheddar cheese Fresh fruit or Large toss salad with turkey or smoked salmon -- lots of veggies --- FF dressing with blue cheese tossed over it Afternoon snack - more fruit or carrots --sometimes, I eat one serving of FF/SF pudding here to get past the chocolate cravings. Supper WW pasta with variety of sauces -- maybe with beef, shrimp or chicken or Grilled meat with roasted potatoes and salad and veggie or Soup with salad or a sandwich on 1 pt bread (always fill the sandwich with lots of goodies --spinach, roasted red-pepper strips, cukes, FF cheese) Snack Popcorn or WW ice cream treat I use most of my 35 extra pts on dried fruit,cheese,nuts (love almonds!) wine and the occasional slice of bread or English muffin. We try lots of the WW recipes -- just got the new Comfort food cookbook. Looks good to this midwest farm girl! Not a lot of pure CORE recipes but some can be used with simple changes -- like whole wheat pasta or FF cheese. and some things -- I'll just count into my pts. I don't have the patience to count points and since I am a bit of a health food nut (we can all our own veggies and fruits --over 500 jars a year) and buy all of our meat from local organic farmers........... CORE works well for me. But you have to "shake it up" -- If you eat grilled chicken everyday for supper and a salad everday for lunch -- you will get bored quick. Cathy

Waymom, Your post caught my eye. I have rheumatoid arthritis and my ankles and feet also pronate severely and I have no arches. I went to the nearest Foot Solutions store and they have saved me! I bought a pair of fexible but pretty strong dress arch supports from them. They were under $100. The supports flex a little but still offer enough support for comfort walking type shoes. Granted, I will probably never wear "dress" shoes again because there is not enough space for this arch support. But I can wear some comfortable walking type shoes with them. Shoes like some Naturalizers, Softspots, etc. It's a real pain to have to try them all on with the orthotic, but that's life. I also found Finn Comfort shoes. They are made in Germany and sold at Foot Solutions, Nordstrom's and several other American shoe stores. They have a solid cork arch support in their shoes and sandals. I could not ever wear sandals if it weren't for this brand. I love them. They are so supportive and many of the styles are cute. They are worth every penny. In fact, the arch supports inside the shoes are removable and the pedorthist (not sure I spelled that right) at Foot Solutions even adds a little more arch for me. She glues a thin layer of a hard flexible plastic under the arches and then grinds it down smooth. This adds another 1/4 inch arch for me. I may go this week to buy a pair of Durea shoes that I tried on before. The shoes are extra depth but they look great. They have a steel shank and a removable half orthotic arch support. They seem so strong and comfortable. They look really nice with pants. Look for a store that carries orthopedic shoes and go there to see if you can find some help. These people have saved my life. Ginny Ps I don't want to go on too long, but I also wear a pair of Spira tennies. They are "posted". By that I mean, the sole on the inside side (post side) of the heel is made of a more dense material than the outside side. This gives you a lot more support so you don't pronate as much. Look for tennies that have this more solid material on the inside side of the heel area. It's called "posted". Also, the "running" shoe styles are the best because the heels are flared out somewhat and that also gives more support.

No, but I once had a party where the guests (by their own design) removed their shoes. The following day I had several callers saying their feet had swollen from something they consumed at my party while a few others called to say that something they ate had caused their feet to shrink. We had a helluva time getting everybody's shoes back to their rightful owners. Whew! And I thought (for one small moment) I was going to be sued, for one small moment, for the dips and chips that had caused edema to occur bordering on kidney or heart failure. Just that everyone mixed up shoes if they were same or similar shoes in color, style, etc. It was the sangria, no doubt. Oh, yeah as a PS, all the women had their rightful shoes; it was the men; the men; the men who had picked the wrong shoes. Wouldn't ya just know.

I had the same problem, and so wore my Crocs. That eventually cured it. The podiatrist says it is from going barefoot or wearing sandles with no arch support. Crocs make a good flip flop type sandle too. Look for them online.

I have very high long arches. I cannot be comfortable in Crocs at all. They are too squishy. The Lands End sandal gives me firm support. I can walk my active dogs in them and even run in them. Can't imagine running in Crocs.

What does your podiatrist recommend? Heed her advice (and I do hope you're going to a woman podiatrist--they not only know feet, but they understand women and their shoes--LOL--and are MUCH better at recommending reasonable solutions).

I have heel spurs and PF, and my pod told me NEVER to EVER wear birkenstocks--so you may want to get professional advice on that before sinking big bucks on something that may make your condition worse. In my case, I also have--apparently--oddly configured feet. My dr. recommended New Balance for running shoes and either Clarks or White Mountain clogs for every day use. I haven't been as thrilled with the WM, but Clarks are amazing! if I start to have trouble with the PF, all I have to do to get relief is slip into a pair of my Clarks--they come in closed clogs as well as summer sandels. I think the combination of the shaped sole, the fact that it doesn't have a lot of sideways motion (very important according to my dr), and the heel height are the things that make it so theraputic for me. With wearing Clarks, I've never needed orthothics--and when I was diagnosed, thing had gotten so bad, I couldn't walk a step without excruciating pain.

But you really want to get a good recommendation from a professional who is familiar with both your medical issues AND the shape and needs of your own feet. They really aren't all created equal and what works for one person might be all wrong for another.

My Pod recommended New Balance shoes or brooks addiction.

Actually it is a female pod. She said if I HAD to wear flip-flop/sandals this summer Crocs were okay and also Birkenstocks. I already have a pair of both so I'll wear those more.

I have had really good luck with New Balance in the past. And the running store I go to recommends shoes based on your gait (they watch you run on the street, NOT a treadmill). I got a pair of orthotics fit to my arch and tried them out the other day. Felt pretty good! I ran 100 miles last summer, so we'll see how it works out this year?
