Good Support Summer Shoe

Hi all-

Since I started running last summer, I have developed plantar facsitis (sp?). One of the ways to help is wearing a shoe with good support in the arch/heel. Normally I LIVE in flip flops all summer. So this year, I need to find something inbetween that is still cool & easy, but good support. I found this shoe on Land's End

When I first got PF, my Doc told me NO sandals. I did wear Birkenstock for a while, then went to crocs.
Birks have the best support if your gonna wear sandals. Check ebay for the best prices.

Well, I'm a huge crocs fan! They make a ton of styles. Sandals, clogs, non-slip, hiking etc etc. What I love is that they can get wet (nothing worse than a soggy tennis shoe!). But your feet DON'T SWEAT in them (REAL CROCS not the $5 Target ones. They're made of plastic and DO make your feet sweat)!!!!!!! My DH had the stinkiest feet in the world til he started wearing them! They're made out of some sort of vegetable protein (soy????) that doesn't make your feet sweat. I'm not sure - but I'll list them and see: 2 pair basic pumps for work (black/navy) 1 pair black loafers (work/casual summer) 2 pair black ankle boots (work/asual winter) 1 pair knee-high snow boots 2 pair dress flats (silver/brown) 2 pair "dressy" heels (black/cream) 1 pair tennis shoes 1 pair yard loafers 1 pair flip flops for summer 1 pair black vinyl knee length heeled platform boots (for Halloween type dress up) 14 total, looks like. I'm okay with that - the "dressy" heels and flats I hardly ever wear, but I do need to keep them for those rare occasions I need a nice shoe in a specific color for a holiday party or some random event. I never wear the navy pumps, so those could probably go, but it's nice to have the option should I want it, and they're in good shape. I wear the heels out on a pair of pumps and ankle boots every year (due to daily wear, I'm sure), so I generally buy a new pair once per year, toss the old ones. This year I might see if I can just have them re-heeled though...

I havent worn crocs in years but they do keep your foot cool-- the textured bed and air vents are the key, I think. I loved them for dog walks, gardening and for quick trips to the grocery store. I also think those keen slip ons would be the same and likely offer more structure. I also love fit flops (not flip flops-- FIT flops) -- they offer great support and even the thong style fits so securely that you don't have to worry about them coming off as you run around. I have a bronze and a silver sequin pair but they come in many styles and colors. I also have a couple of pairs of these nike rosherun shoes-- they are mesh so very comfortable, light and airy even though they have a closed toe. You can't tel from the photo but the mesh around the foot is very thin-- in fact, I have the lime green and it is almost see thru. They are very comfortable -- so much so that I don't like to wear them for serious exercise kind of walks. They definitely wear more like a slipper than a nike sneaker.

There are some good recommendations here. What I would recommend is that you go to a good shoe and have them properly fitted. I have been suffering from severe Plantar Fasciitis for the past 6 months. After seeing a massage therapist, podiatrist and physical therapist, I am finally getting some relief. In both the physical therapist and podiatrist's offices, they had a display of Vionics. I almost bought them, but was concerned as neither place seemed to know much about them. I went to a local shoe store that carries only the great brands, many of which were talked about above. The sales woman knew what she was talking about. I tried on the Vionics flip flops and hated them. I bought another style of Vionics as well as a pair of Naot's, a pair of Olukai and a pair of another brand I can't remember now. It turns out, I was wearing shoes a size too small. I tried on many, many different shoes and this woman analyzed each pair on my feet. Best thing I ever did, expensive but worth it. What works for one person might not work for someone else and if they don't fit properly, it' s even worse Take the time to be fitted properly. You won't regret it. Good luck!!!

Kat-read my summer shoe take 2 post. Hit submit a bit early!

Joann-I do have a pair of Birks that I like! Were you able to "get rid" of PF? Is it something that can go away? I'm afraid it will be aching forever!!

Will it go away? If you follow your dr's advice, and do the excercises regularly, you should be able to get rid of the symptoms, but as a fellow sufferer, I have to say, unless you do those exercises constantly, you probably will have flare-ups from time to time. However, as you become more aware and recognize the symptoms earlier, you will probably be able to head off any really severe episodes with the exercises and proper footwear.

As I said in my other answer--your dr. is the best one to ask these questions of,though. Follow her advice to the letter. I'm a little surprised that your dr didn't recommend shoe brands for you--maybe a second opinion would be a good idea?

I've had plantar fasciitis for about 25 years, and yes, you can get rid of it, though as Azzalea said, you'll be subject to flareups. The best advice I received from my doctor is that you should never, ever, even for one step, walk barefoot. Your foot needs a good arch support at all times.

I used Birks for awhile, but the arch is a bit high for my foot. (Lots of PF sufferers swear by them, though.) I recently started using Orthaheel sandals as slippers, to wear around the house. (I always have a pair of sandals that I use as slippers, because you can get better arch support in sandals.)

Joann_fla is right that doctors usually say no sandals, at least at first. The best thing for me is a pair of sneakers with orthotics. (I had custom ones at first, but now use the green ones from Spenco.) However, most people do want to wear sandals, and the Orthaheel ones are made specifically for plantar fasciitis. Plus, they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee. Also check the Foot Smart site for other brands that have good arch support.

Whatever you do, don't go back to wearing regular flip-flops. They're flat and have no arch support at all.

I also love birks but wear Mephisto shoes and find them to be very comfortable. I've also worn Fly Flot shoes and like them, too. Both are made in Italy. Fly Flot are much cheaper and work as well.

teresava, my PF lasted about 3 years. I had my foot taped in the beginning. I could hardly walk and I was waiting tables at the time so it was tough. I kept it taped probably 3 months, DH did it for me. I took lots of ibuprofen and iced my foot often. Then I got better shoes. It seemed to get somewhat better and I just wore a arch brace, like a ace bandage. The pain would come & go and if I worked too hard it hurt. I tried some exercises but hated it and it never did anything to help anyway. I read everything I could about the problem and it finally got better over time. Good luck, take care of your feet. I still suffer with my feet. Now, its other stuff like corns callouses etc...

You should check out the FootSmart online site. I get the catalog in the mail and they have a lot of good sandals and other stuff for folks who suffer from foot problems.
