Running out of time which deck stain do I use?

We have a home in south eastern Pennsylvania. We have bleached, stripped, brightened, and power-washed a 500 sq ft deck located on north end of the house that is prone to moss and mildew build-up. Used Cabot stipping products and finished that phase in September. It has been raining every two to three days since then. Were going to use Cabot SPF48 but read some very negative reports from users. Morning temperatures are now in the mid to low 40's. Should we use Wood Tux, TWP516, Defy, Sikkens SRD, Deck Scape? What is most suitable for these conditions? Running out of time! Wait til Spring? Diligent

Diligent,

Use an oil. Almsot all commercially available sealers stink. We have the tightest VOC laws in the country (I am in Delaware County PA) If you have to buy something commercial get something from a paint store. The temps ar still going to be fine into early November. If the deck is older I recommend a paraffinic oil based product. I just started selling Baker's Gray Away and so far everyone loves it. It will bring older wood back to life and condition it as well as provide easy maintenance and recoat.

Diligent, we were in the same boat as you with the deck prepped and falling temps. I researched a majority of the products that you listed and more, and decided on the Baker's Gray Away that pressurepros spoke of. It was easy to apply, soaked in nicely and looks beautiful. We applied it a week ago last Saturday, and had a few good warmer sunny days until we actually got 3 inches of snow. I don't generally order a lot of products over the internet, but I found the customer service to be excellent as well.

What about paint remover. I once saw an article recommending specific brands and some were commercial products that were supposed to be more effective and came in large (can't recall if it was 1 gallon or 5 gallon) cans. Once they are done soaking, a blade like the edge of a putty knife could be used to remove the visible stuff. Since you are only worried about looks, you wouldn't need to go too deep. Then a little steel wool and you would be done. A little water rinse and some paint thinner on a rag should make it pretty decent. I don't know if it will take stain if the pores are plugged tho. Might need to get a little can and work in a corner somewhere where you can try it out without spoiling the whole deck project.

It is interesting to me. I thought I liked it as is, but the pictures you posted are fabulous lukki. I love the green. I would probably lean towards cream though too. I just find it jarring to have the front so different than the rest of the house. I actually do not like it at all, yet have somehow ended up in that kind of house twice in a row! the one i Have now has brick on the entire front and then White vinyl siding on the other three sides. Why? why? :)

These are a couple chairs I really like. This is my favorite, but is this one too "grand" for an everyday eating area with my kids? It's a bit pricer too, but I like it a lot. My preference is the grey chair on the right. Thoughts? I really like this chair as well and it's very well priced, but I'm not sure if it's plush enough or the look I'd like. Our previous chairs were actually living room accent chairs and we really got into lounging and talking at the table long after dinner. Again, this grey is my color preference (far left), but they are only available in a charcoal grey (looks black in photo on the right, but one review says charcoal, not black). They may make my life easier with kids, but not my golden retriever! I question if the dark grey may be too harsh for our space though.

the thing on the floor that the gray and the dark choice are resting on should be the perimeter counter color. A CREAM. You can certainly do a solid surface like corian etc as that perimeter counter isnt going to be a focus at all when you consider the island. Keep it simple.....If you want something more go to a hardware option for a tiny bit more of visuals. TRY a champagne bronze hardware considering that warmer shade of veining I see.

Thanks so much! How does one get Baker's Gray Away? Is there a website? Customer Service number? Is it carried by a specific dealer (e.g. MAB Paints, Sherwin Williams, et al)? Couldn't find anything on-line.

Check out Pressurepro's page- he has a link listed for his website and how to order it. He also can give you more specifics about the product itself. From what I understand, it's a smaller company that has sold it's product primarily to contractors. Ken (pressurepros) has recently started getting the word out about it and selling it to the public. The guy knows his stuff- if you look at past threads in this forum he is quite well respected around here. That is one of the reasons why we went with the Baker's. Also, you've already prepped your deck, but in the future if you ever need a good deck cleaning product his Restore A Deck works great, too.
