Psst..Wanna Help Me Surprise DH?

His birthday is April 29th..and I'd like to give him a "Card Shower"..but I need your help! He's been through so much these past few months, after being diagnosed with lung cancer last August! I think this would be something he'd really get a kick (and pick-me-up) out of.

Don't give him cold shoulder. Lay it all out. Specifically. I don't like it when you _____________ because I feel _____________ when that happens. Then tell him what you will do. Example. My 7 year old (yep, because that's how old your dh is acting!!) keeps not appreciating what I do for her. Not only that, but acting like a little brat prior to us doing fun stuff. I finally told her today that I am tired of feeling like this. I told her I cannot control what she does, but I can control how I react to it. So the next time she doesn't listen to me about eating in the living room or whatever, I'm not going to get all upset. We're just not going to do the fun stuff we had planned. Then I won't feel that she's taking advantage and martyr myself. End game. I think she got it. So, what will you do when DH does something like that? DH: I think your tattoos are hideous. You: I apologize for my husband. That was innappropriate to say to you, a guest in our home. Would you like to come with me to the patio for some tea? DH: Rush Limbaugh is an idiot, I don't see how any smart person could listen to him. You must be an idiot. You: It's obvious we have different opinions on this subject. Aren't politics a heated subject!! By the way, Aunt Jen, this is a lovely coffee cake. How did you make it so fluffy and light? By doing that, it takes the attention from him, lets him and everyone know that you won't stand for it, and lets him off without the humility of being kicked or told off. Just smile, and cut him off at the chase. Diffuse while in the heat of it, then when you get him alone have specific things to tell him, without anger or blame.

Scarlett, I had a c-section with my 3rd baby so while I was opened up they did the tubal ligation. There is actually something like a 3 percent failure rate on tubals, and before surgery you sign a release form releasing the doctor from responsibility if you would get pregnant and that you understand that there is a risk of pregnancy. Well today was the day that things really hit me and got to me. My mom was up and told me that my family is concerned about how DH treats me and how I do everything as far as the kids, house, and family are concerned with out much help. When I do get some help it is like we should have a party lol. I told DH I was fed up and physically exhausted and was a step away from calling our minister. Well I did call him and he came over and we talked for some time over the things that were happening, he even had my mom go out and talked to her about things. DH is going to be gone through Sunday but I am hoping that he will go and talk to Mel the minister sometime next week. The things that he doesn't understand are: The physical effects of pregnancy and breast feeding. Over the past 6 years except for 5 months I have either had a baby in my belly or at the boob. I am physically wore out. Hayden was only 5 months old when I got pregnant and Dr. was the one to recommend the tubal because my body had a hard enough time with the last pregnancy that she didn't know how I could handle another pregnancy, surprise baby comes in November. The effect of his actions and reactions on our kids as far as his spending time with them and yelling at me and our arguements. That even though I am a sahm I don't have to to everything for him, that he can help too. And that being a sahm is a job, and one that I work hard at. That because of my health, mentally, physically and emotionally, he needs to step up. I will keep everyone posted. He is at a conference all day tomorrow and leaves Thursday for Sturgis bike rally with his younger brother. So will be home alone with 3 kids for 5 days, will be tough. I think that they might go down to my sisters this weekend, and I might have the weekend to myself. Except for an hour this morning when I went to town to the pharmacy and grocery store, I haven't had a free minute with out one kid or another or all for months and I need a break. I will keep in touch and let everyone know how things are going. I am at the point where it is touch and go and I am just about ready to go. Stacie girlsingardens

Outdoor Kitchen - grill help? surprising my DH...

We researched grills for a year before we bought, and basically thought Weber is the best in that price range (didn't think the high-end grills were that much better or would get that much more use to justify going up to that level, in the multiple thousands, even though we did splurge on high-end indoor appliances) Our previous grill was a Weber that lasted about 12 years before it finally rusted apart - but it still worked! We had it propped up for months before we gave it up. Of course we use the grill often where we are only grilling the meat and the rest of the meal is indoors. We use the side burner pretty much every time we plan to eat outside for whatever the side dish is (beans, vegetable, rice, whatever) - prep inside and cook it outside. We also use the rotisserie pretty regularly for chicken and pork roasts. We always have a spare full propane tank handy. The next door neighbor just changed it out last night while he was cooking his dinner, and you're going to think this is crazy, but we took down the fence and we share the giant grill and tiki hut with our neighbors. The arrangement works beautifully.

It sounds to me like someone checked off the names they wanted in Outlook or a similar contact manager and paid no attention at all to how the names were said or if there would be a question as to whether it meant plus spouses, plus children, etc. Not so much lacking in etiquette as utterly clueless about how to make a guest list in the first place. Anne, good for you for sticking with the notion that these are good friends even when feelings were being hurt. There are a heck of a lot of clueless people in the world and it would be a lonely place if we dumped all of them just for one thoughtless gaff. As to gifts, thinking along the lines of Littlebug's joke, how about a home organizer kit? If they're combining two households, plus wedding gifts, they probably have a lot of stuff, some of it valuable. A home organizer kit, with one of those engraving pens for marking electronics, ledgers (spreadsheets) for insureables, pouches for receipts, a binder for insurance policies, bank documents, trust papers, etc., a file box for instruction manuals, plus things like note paper to write the stories of heirlooms on, colorful stickers, maybe even a garage sale kit, could also help them learn to be organized. :) Or you can get them something as random as the invitation. Go to a china shop or department store with a good return policy for bridal and get the most interesting looking random thing in your price range. Maybe a glass and silver pickle jar or a strange art glass vase.

Sure...feel free to pop it in the mail anytime! As a side-note..any kind of card is fine, but know that he/we do NOT have a problem with "religious" cards!

I really appreciate all of you doing this! He's gonna be so surprised and if I can keep a straight face when he starts asking questions..I may just ask him about "all his girlfriends" that are sending cards!! lol (I know I can't do it with a straight face..but the thought of it IS funny).

Mine should be there by now. I was afraid to wait too long to mail it. Our mail service is sometimes slow getting to us, I didn't want that to happen getting to him. Hope he has a very special birthday Bump.
