Our quirky kitchen: Range hood and faucet installed (pics)

Our range hood (GE Monogram ZV950SDSS) finally got installed today. Issues with this were 1) the vent opening had to detour around major truss ceiling supports and 2) its 25-inch depth meant it needed to be above head height (installed at 71.5 inches). And of course the glass tile needed to be installed first.

The faucet also was installed today and we have working sink and garbage disposal. That is a big step forward! (The contractor twice delivered the wrong faucet, long story ...)

The last major item is the GE Cafe dual-fuel oven/cooktop. I think it will be a tight fit. Interesting to see how they handle that.

susanpn- Thank you for your kind words, right now it's an unfitted and, well, undone kitchen, hopefully before too long it will just be unfitted, we are inching our way towards the finish line. The ceiling is doug fir (untreated) beadboard, the thing that look like a track is actually a cedar board, the ceiling is laid in a grid pattern to break up the expanse of the somewhat fussy beadboard. We have a wood hood (without liner or blower) that I bought when a local tile place was changing out their displays. It was a corner installation over a 36" range, sort of a farmhouse-cum-vintage something or other style, and I think it will work. I will post pics when we are finished. Also, as I look at these pics, I see how pathetic the range looks without the side shelving and counters, I will take a pic of that and try to post tonight. sandyponder

grlwprls, that glass tile comes in 12 inch sheets with 144 glass tiles per sheet. So that makes installation easier. Thy have a paper front and the paper peels off after the tiles have set. The cabinets were custom made by a local cabinet guy, but they were one-half the price we got from a cabinet firm. He calls it a 'Shaker' design but the center panel has a pretty bead along the edge. The medium maple finish has an ebony wash, which clings to the bead.

Chacha's solution is very good. Alternatively, you could have two little 3" long stainless steel pieces made the same height as the front panel of the hood (2"?) and use the to fill the gap between the hood and the cabinets. Then tile below that. You could even have a sort little rail attached to them to hang a spoon from... Or run a kitchen tool rail between the cabinets just below the hood and tile up to the bottom of that. I've linked to the expensive but cool Rosle system below. Here in the Bay Area I feel like things can so easily get out of control...I totally sympathize with trying to get the budget back on track. Unfortunately we had some VERY bad news seismically speaking about the new requirements for the Peninsula. So, the budget got way out of wack during demo but before construction. Very quickly I had to make adjustments as we were doing exploratory digging and realizing that our foundation footings were not at all deep enough to pass the City's rules. I don't think you will ever regret splurging on the cherry cabinets though. A real investment and well worth it!

Any tile by Oceanside gets my vote! I had wanted to do our whole bathroom in it but it is expensive. Ended up with a mosaic "wannabe" and had to change my whole color scheme to match the one color that was on sale! LOVE your warm, rich colors. Simply gorgeous!

Ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh just lovely. The warm browns,
coppers, golds and creams of the funky tiny tiles are
perfect with the movement in your granite. Divine!
I adore the little light in the upper right corner of
your rich warm wood that blend this space
so nicely.

Heh, consider it a case of needing to wait and see, but when I saw your in progress photos I thought your kitchen was one that just didn't do it for me. And now with the hood in place (and the different more dramatic lighting), I kind of love it.

I also would love to know what your cabinets are. The shaker with bead look is great. It's still clean lines, but has a little visual punch, which is perfect. And the colors here are great. If you get a chance, would you mind showing an upclose of your drawer fronts? Do those have a bead around them? Are they just flat? My wife and I are trying to find something along these lines of full overlay shaker with a bead, but they usually end up looking too busy to us when done in a full kitchen. Not here though, these cabs just look great.

The kitchen is fabulous but I have to state for the record that what really got me was the composition of your photos. Great job!! I love the upshot of the faucet with the vent in the background. Someday when I list my house to sell I want you to take the pictures of it! :-)

These pics are for brickton:

The cabinets doors are called an '8-piece' because 4 pieces are added to create the bead around the inset. On the upper drawers only (which are narrower) the bead runs along the outside edge of the drawer and there is no inset.

Yummy shaker with bead cabinets. It's all really beautiful. Love the SS range hood. I especially love the artistic photo (the last photo) from the view of the sink!!
