Our quirky kitchen, some lights installed today (pics) ...

No much progress today, since the contractor has twice delivered the wrong faucet. Maybe tomorrow we will have running water. But the real can lights, under cabinet lights and main pendant light were installed today.

(The light rail hasn't been installed, and yes, those open cabinets will eventually have doors.)

Still no stove, no hood, no faucet, but some lights were installed today:

How pretty! I love the rich caramel colors in your wood, granite and backsplash. What granite is that? and your ceiling and light fixture are beautiful! Good luck!

jterrilynn: That's more or less a medium cherry with an ebony wash on the cabinets. (And it is very nice.) plllog: Nope, that pillar is for design purposes only. It does not hold up anything. Our designer, who correctly called very other decision, felt it was needed to anchor that peninsula. It's not an island, and the ceiling squares off. The dropped ceiling was needed for plumbing reasons. On the grainte: The fabricator had never seen a notched in job like this, but was game and did a great job. A seam would not have been a big deal really, but he did it according to the design.

A2, how much longer until completion? I bet the 27th seems forever away. Your kitchen transformation will be amazing once the counters go in. The main sink was easy to figure out as far as placement goes. The prep sink . . . . well, that was tough. Definitely didn't achieve symmetry but was looking more for function. Wanted to make the sink usable from both sides in spite of the corner. It is interesting watching each others progress considering we started at the same time. They are going definitely taking different routes to get there. Your kitchen looks so great with all those doors up. I really want my doors! Can't wait.

Thanks, guys, for the compliments, especially for my little cutie-pie. I was so happy when he walked in the kitchen and said "wow, it looks kind of nice." Made my day. The light granite is Golden Queen, although it looks like Gold and Silver to me. Maybe they are the same thing? They only had the one slab from that lot when we went to the granite yard, which wasn't enough for our kitchen. Our KD found the dark granite, which he loved, and really wanted us to use for the perimeter. They called it Bronze Macchiatto, but I've searched and searched and never found a granite called Bronze Macchiatto anywhere else, or anything that looked like it. Honestly, when I first saw the dark granite, it made no impression on me. And although I can agonize for days over a faucet, I questioned how the two granites would look together for about 1 minute, and then just said "okay, go for it." That was in December. I hadn't seen the granite since, and was really starting to worry that we'd made a big mistake. I really give credit to my KD for finding that granite. I would have walked right by it, but now I love it.

This looks to be a great space for cooking and feeling good. Good thinking, good taste, even downright classy. Where are the quirks? I envy your high ceilings. Nice job!

The quirkiness comes in the dropped ceiling (plumbing issues), which lead to the coffered ceiling, which led to that unique light fixture at the center.

The granite is Typhoon Bordeaux and that glass tile is Oceanside Coppertone. The cabinets are medium cherry.

The light almost looks like a living creature (I mean that in a good, organic way). Very cool. I think your whole kitchen is pretty amazing. I would have thought it a risk to pair a mosaic tile with Typhoon Bordeaux but heck, IT WORKS! Love it! It's very warm and inviting!

Lovely - and I really admire the effort of your tile setter! Whoa. I'm always too lazy to work out details like that and just Tile It All! :-)

I am in love with those cabinets. Simple, clean details. Any chance you'd tell us the cab company? Or that you wouldn't mind if I showed those to my contractor if they are custom?

grlwprls, that glass tile comes in 12 inch sheets with 144 glass tiles per sheet. So that makes installation easier. Thy have a paper front and the paper peels off after the tiles have set.

The cabinets were custom made by a local cabinet guy, but they were one-half the price we got from a cabinet firm.

He calls it a 'Shaker' design but the center panel has a pretty bead along the edge. The medium maple finish has an ebony wash, which clings to the bead.
