Painting cabinets white, need help choosing color

I need to pick a "white" for my cabinets and could use some help. Right now I'm leaning towards BM White Dove or Simply White - but would love to hear about what others have used. I'm looking for a white that is not stark - but also is not too yellow or too gray (dingy). Something that would have dimension and richness.

My kitchen is in progress as you can see. The floors are maple, the bottom cabinets are cherry, and the counter is soapstone.

BTW, any suggestions on wall color would be much appreciated! Looking for a nice inviting neutral (not anything with a real "color" to it) that would compliment the cabinets and floor but not draw too much attention.

Mine are painted White Dove. Not yellow or greyish. Probably a good idea to get a pint and paint a sample board to look at in your kitchen at different times of day. There are lots of threads on whites for kitchen cabinets here. A good way to search is to go to Google and search for "gardenweb white cabinets" or something like that. That way, even the older threads pop up.

Pauline, it sounds like you're on the right track with whites...cloud white, timid white and frostine might be worth a look, too...or they might just confuse the issue! It's easy to get overwhelmed with similar shades that might all work just fine. I'm not sure how neutral a wall color you're looking for, but some colors I like (in the right light - lighting and surrounding colors make SOO much difference!) are: palace white, spanish white, manchester tan, sail cloth, soft chamois, white down, gray mist and alaskan skies. Looks beautiful so far! :)

I also have the Edgemont door style in white -- mine is Nordic. I had custom painted white cabinets before, and I hated how the oil based paint had turned dingy yellow beige, so I wanted a true, clean white. I also have a lot of warmer tones in adjoining rooms, so I didn't want to go with a cool undertone. I like the crisp white. I also like the Edgemont door style. There is -- or at least at the time was -- one door style in Brookhaven that is less that Edgemont. I think that is the Andover. Chatham is a Woodmode door style -- although it appears to be a simpler style, the Woodmode line is going to run more. I personally prefer the softer line and little bit of detail in the Edgemont -- you make like the sharper edges of the Chatham (more rustic or more contemporary leanings). I think that decision would be based on the look you are going for and possibly your budget. Either one is going to be a good choice.

ging9-when we were going with painted cabinets (vision has changed since then), I was also looking for a creamy white that was still white, not yellowy or pink. On the advice of this forum, we sampled BM dove white and loved it. It is truly the color of cream. I didn't try Lancaster white so I can't say if it's much different. Don't go by the paint chip. Go to the store and get them to mix a few samples for you (our BM store will make up 4 oz. of any color for $4.99). Then you can paint some poster boards and actually move them around your kitchen to get a good idea of how each color will look in all the spaces and at different times of the day.

Thank you, lam and peppy doodle! I have to admit I was a little bit in shock when they first took down the tape because it looked so different, but now I'm loving the change! I'm glad I'm not regretting it. I keep sneaking back into the kitchen to look at it. Seems so much brighter and lighter than before, but still warm enough with the creamy white. I can't wait to see it with the doors back on and new hardware installed. Snookums - thanks for the tip. I'm trying to keep everyone out of the kitchen and the painters are very careful, but good to know. I'd hate to have a can of paint spill all over my slate floor!

Love your light fixture and the new chair covering. I would leave your cabinets the color they are; they have a certain presence I like, unless you feel they clash horribly with the floor. Call me crazy but I would paint your table and chairs Fort York Red, which will make them stand out from the grayish floor and yet look good with the dark cabinets. I'm sure others will have completely different ideas, but at least you'll have food for thought.
