Jinny Beyer's Quilt Shop

I had to spend a few days in Washington DC last week on a business trip and managed to find a little time to get out to Jinny Beyer's shop in Great Falls, VA. OMG, I was in awe. I love her fabrics, especially the border prints, and the shop has all of them. Bolts and bolts of beautiful colors, plus all her tone-on-tone small prints for blending and matching. I could have bought a yard of everything but tried hard to remember my budget.

The first quilt I ever made was done with her fabrics - all from the old Bordeaux series. I've been a fan ever since.

I know how you feel about wanting everything -i used to work in a fabric/patchwork/quilting/needlework shop in Cornwall and often did the buying - it was very difficult to stick to a budget as to me all of the fabrics were gorgeous and if i had had my way would have bought the lot!!
Have been to Washington D.C. in the early 70's - wonderful city but unfortunately as i was on business did not get to see all that i wanted. Have a great weekend.

What a wonderful site. I had never heard of her, being new to the quilting world but I bookmarked the web site AND bought the rainbow sampler. Her fabrics are fabulous, plus the site offers free patterns, quilting tips, and lots of other useful information.

Your nursing home sounds great, but am hoping I am a long way from ever having to use it. In recent years hubby has cut back on my fabric budget. In years past I would spend like $50 - $80 and buy all my fabric for a queen-size quilt all at one time. And in years past, and am finishing one up now, I have been very controlled in my quilting making quilts like backwards pinwheel and card tricks quilts. I am finally starting to accumulate some scraps and am finding that buying fabric in smaller quantities seems to gives me less fuss from hubby. So am starting to buy more fabric quarters and 2 yard segments here lately. So my next quilt that I make for me I want to be a scrap quilt, a Grandmother's Flower Garden, a simple version of it with just one ring per block. I have also learned how to machine applique and how to hand applique during the past 9 months so am finding it handy in those projects to use fabric quarters. I am finding ways to be a frugal quilter and buy things in small amounts so my husband doesn't freak out on me, LOL that way we can both be happy with my quilting projects. I have found a good pace though. I spend 2 to 3 years making a queen-size quilt and then in the years between I start additional queen-size quilts and make lap quilts and baby quilts. I try not to have more than 5 or 6 quilts going at any one time. The last 2 years I have been working on 9-inch block quilts. This year I am starting one that is a 12-inch block quilt. I am also participating in the Round Robin Seeds-N-Stitches Swaps and that has me trying out new things like machine applique. It does take me a little out of my comfort zone, but am happy to be learning new things. And I like to browse through the internet and print out free quilt patterns. Ones I might possibly make in future years. And I print them out in case those websites aren't there in the future. Well back to my quilting. :-) Best to you, Sandra

Happy Birthday Kate!! I'd sing for you, but really, no one wants to hear that. Well, I was going to quilt, LOL. I sewed a little yesterday, the temps dropped overnight, so I went out to the studio to warm it up around 8 am this morning. I went out at 9, got some cleaning and cutting done before lunch. But my hands got really cold, and I was happy to come in and warm up. At noon, we began having what the weather people had been forecasting - wintry mix of snow, ice, freezing rain. I had to shut down my studio. My path from house to studio is across the deck. It faces north and is about 6' above grade where I walk. It's going to be a sheet of ice in another 1/2 hour, LOL. This happens only every few years here in Central Texas, so we're not really prepared with heavy clothes, etc. I'm going to stay inside. I have a pot of French onion soup simmering, the baguette sliced and toasted, the Gruyere grated and ready to melt. The ingredients for a salad are ready, and it only takes a few minutes for a simple vinaigrette. DH has a fire started, and it's lovely.

You know, when I make a list of something to work on, it's usually something off the list that I work on, (unless it's really necessary) and, NO guilt!!! Why no guilt???? because I said so!!!!! No 'guilt' police either! Thank you, LindaB. I know he wants what's best for me. I'm not sure how I'll put these barns together or if I'll make a silo barn, too. I'll ask Holly how big she'd like it to be...she's lost over 50# now and since she's been going to the gym and working out, there's minimal flab. I am just so proud of her!! Sandra, Thank you.....I appreciate the prayers. I was telling someone the other day about how you hand sew your quilts from start to finish. Just so awesome.... Lois, Lois, Lois.......I was just looking at oriental fabric at The Blue Bamboo website earlier today. Their fabric is, well, fantastic! And, yes, I'm jealous that I don't have a store close-by like the Blue Bamboo. You have a talent of using the perfect colors/fabric together so I cannot wait for pictures!

Thank you all...your kind words and encouragement feeds this constant urge to quilt something...anything...LOL!!! Murphy_zone7: I dare say you may be correct, I did the 64 patch over two week nights and made the tote in no time over the weekend...already thinking of more totes. And the bling...well that's actually curtain / drapery hardware to be used for holdback...never used for my curtains and it was just sitting there saying Use Me! V.

I agree! I love Jinny's fabrics, especially the tone-on-tone prints. You can always find something to "blend" with something else. The best part is, they keep reprinting some of the classics! She also has a great book on choosing colors "Color Confidence." That book was very helpful to me, explaining about shading, deep darks and accents and why they work. I've been designing applique lately, and I can see the influence it has had on my color choices.

I am now really impressed! Click on the Block a Week and you can get a list of past blocks, the patterns for which are all free, and you can even bring up a design board for the quilt and (over to the right), calculate the yardage.

I love Jinny Beyer's Quilts and fabrics. I think we will be heading south this spring I think I may have to try and find that Quilt shop, it sounds wonderful. Jayne

Jayne, the shop is in Great Falls, west of DC and just south of the river. It's well worth the effort to find it. It's not large but if you like her fabrics you'll be overwhelmed at the selection. Be sure to go up stairs to look at the quilts and check out the sale table!

I notice some of her fabrics on the sale rack at one of my favorite online shops. It may be only a super bowl sale thing, don't know, but I may order some.

That's a great price on her fabrics. I attached a link for one of them that's really beautiful. I've spent way too much on fabric lately or I would be ordering some of this! I need a bigger budget and more storage space!

As I was sorting through my stash, looking for prints (I know, I'm always talking solids, but I do use prints sometimes), I came across an old Jenny Beyer print from 1980. I still see this particular pattern in quilt stores.
