New Ipe Deck Project - Some specific questions for the experts
Comments (2)Hi there; am just beginning a screen porch project that will replace original PT pine deck on exterior rear of our marshfront home here in coastal Georgia. We thought we had finalized decision on Ipe flooring, but contractor has suggested an alternative product called Exoro redwood. I can find very little info on the web about it and would appreciate any insights, opinions, etc. Our screen porch is sizable, about 1000 sq. feet with southern exposure. Thanks so much in advance; I really value this forum! Leigh Ann H....See MoreIs Stripper needed for new (last fall) Ipe deck?
Comments (3)If your wood has never had anything on it, using a stripper is overkill. It simply needs a good wash with a product that will kill any mold/mildew spores (you can't see them but they're there!!) You can brighten to give the wood a more even look prior to staining. Comments (2)All new wood must be thoroughly saturated and exposed to either rain or water; three or more times to open the wood grain and remove excess surface tannins. Allow a minimum of 48 hours of good drying conditions before applying TWP® 100. This is from twp's website. I also found it at other places. You could hose it down a few times really good through the week.. and then stain it at after a good few days of dry weather. John doesn't stain all sides but I would. Chapter 15 of the forests products labratory claims moisture vapors entering the wood will create uneven moisture and procure cupping. But.... keep in mind you're dealing with ipe and it is very forgiving. Especially when you face install it. It's not a typical wood that will cup like pine. The finishing of 1 side would be much more drastic on a softer wood. Here is a link that might be useful: Forest products labratory...See MoreNew Ipe decking is cupping
Comments (11)We've had to remove the Ipe on the back porch. We're currently discussing our options, hence the update. We are planning on closing the two drains (which is a whole separate challenge.) One of the proposals is fill would go in and, in essence, a reinforced garage floor would be on top of that. Cut stone like flagstone would be the surface. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. This is a screened porch and it will be used a lot. Thanks again. Dalas, Texas...See Morenetty
