blown away with electrical quote

my pb recommended an electrician for the job and 1st off i can say that i like the idea of the 2 of them working together and having that kind of relationship.the quote i recieved today consists of trenching (which is about 100 feet)wiring of the pool w/ timer,bonding of pool,pool light with switch in house,110 volt convenience outlet within 20 ft of pool,and lastly.subpanel.my electrical box is not easily accessible from the back of my house due to addition w/ crawl space so he has to trench it to the side of my house and run the wire thru this sie to my box which is about another 30 ft or so from outside the house.the price i recieved was $2400. what baffels me is this same electrician quoted me 1600 when we were thinking of an above ground.anyone wish to chime in?

seems reasonable to me but I live in Southern California where I couldn't get an elecrtician to show up and take a leak on my lawn for less than a grand.

An ingound pool with the light adds more to the bill... the light alone is ~$200.00 plus the bonding wire, potting compound, and added labor. I do pool electric in SoCal and it may be a bit higher than we would charge, but it isn't totally out of sight, either.

For the record, to show up and take a leak on your lawn would only run you about $125.00 if you are in my regular service area. :)

thanks to all for responding. If you'll pardon the pun, I think a light just turned on! the diagram on the switch carton showed the motor 'load' (thank you) attaching to the two 'top' connectors. (top, as in the top of the switch). I think you've shown me my error. Apparently, I need to attach the power lead to the top brassy terminal and the motor lead to one of the bottom black terminals. my switch has four terminals and a ground terminal. I'll let you know how it works out. I do appreciate the feedback. P.S. what I meant by 'stops working': I go on vacation. Turn off the switch so the gate doesn't accidentally get opened while I'm away. (it happens with remote controlled devices) Thus, the importance of a switch, right? So, I turn off the switch--which cuts power to the unit. When I return home I turn the switch ON and that's when my problem started: I got no power after I turned on the switch. It's as if I'd burned out a fuse/breaker--which I didn't since I could directly connect my power leads to each other instead of the switch and the gate opened/closed just fine. And, finally, I'm fairly certain that the switch is the correct type because the carton specifically states it is for use in applications involving motors. It is rated at 20A/120-277V. The switch used previously was a common house-hold switch installed by the previous home-owner.

I had some simple electrical work done, basically adding two new outlets, replacing two GFCI outlets, and installing a ceiling fixtures. Estimates ranged from 1000.00 to about 250.00 plus materials. I chose a small family owned business; the master electrician did excellent work, it took him about 2 hours, and I ended up paying about 320.00 including material. The 1K estimate was based on about 7-8 hours of work plus material. I live in an expensive neighborhood and have found that the local companies charge a lot more than the companies that are about 10-20 miles away. Frequently, I'm baffled by how some people come up with estimates, and quite frankly, I feel ripped off. (For example, I got an estimate for carpet re-install, and when I said that that I would go with someone else, the contractor offered to cut his price in half! What???)

It is the pits in ND this morning! 6 to 8 inches of wet, very heavy snow on the roads. Still snowing like mad and still blowing like a banshee.Cars and semi's in the ditches every where. No paper delivery, no school, the clinic is closed here, and the frosting on the cake was when cable tv and internet went out!!!!! Can you say borrrrring? I thought I was in for a long day of watching the snow come down. I have internet thanks to a devoted cable tv employee (my DB!LOL) who drove in this stuff for many miles early this morning to fix the outage for lots of towns.

Lily, Your place is SO beautiful!!! My Blossomtime is own root, but still very vigorous. I'm growing mine as a shrub rather than a climber, and as oldrosarian said, it can kinda look like it has a hangover...but LOVE it nonetheless. Mine is in full sun and does repeat decently...not as strong as its spring flush, but regularly has a good number of blooms throughout the summer. Its blooms can be quartered, high centered, nodding, outward or upward facing...usually some of all at the same time. At several years old now, it is about 5 ft tall and about twice as wide. I have not yet built here in CT but the PB we will use also works closely w/ an electrician; says he's reliable and since he has experience w/ my PB, the jobs fit well together like a puzzle. Anyway, my PB quoted $1850 for electric. Our pool will be vinyl, rectangle, 18x40 and is set back and off to the side from the house due to septic. Three or four years ago, a 500' roll of 12 AWG wire was $20.
Today, it's $51.

I had to have a 220 line moved for my above ground spa. That was approx $1200. That was from an electrician I've used before. PBs quoted approx $1500-2000 to move line. The price will vary depending on how much trenching they have to do, plus the cost of wire (which has gone up in recent years).

Sounds fair to me. You're asking for at least three circuits that I can see. Pool timer, light and outlet. None of which can be on the same circuit. You don't mention if this is a labor only quote or includes light, etc. Three circuits with 3 wires each x 130 feet is almost 1200 feet of wire and that does not include the solid copper bond wire, potting compound and junction boxes. An above ground install is way different. A simple plug and a GFI in most cases.

i purchased a colorlogic light thru my PB which alone cost me over $900. but when a plain white light was going to cost me $638.00 i figured what is another 200 bucks therefore going w/ the colorlogic.so his price is for his labor and trenching,which also includes what materials he needs to get the job done.

It's amazing what the builders charge. I'm in so cal and we install two color logigs aftermarket for what you paid for one. A standard white light is about 425.
