Anyone get blown away?

I can't believe this wind storm we are having! I brought in all the furniture from the yard last night so it didn't blow away. It's kinda scary especially after the microburst we had back in April. I do't like wind storms at all.

We made it thru here in north central Ohio. I had high winds and hard rain about 2 pm eastern. Lasted less than an hour. I had a 55 gallon drum size plastic barrel blow in the yard from behind the shed, and the smoker blew over and sent the lid flying, but all is well now. Still windy but not bad. Tornado watch in effect until 4.

Yep, and lawn maintenance is fruitlessly blowing leaves.

Hard to believe that unripe figs may get blown away by wind, unless (unlikely) it is some hurricane. What I think is happening is that they were on their way to be dropped by the tree anyway, and the wind just helped. If you still think that it is just the wind, some sort of a wind breaker, e.g., a lattice fence/guard, may help. But I seriously think that something else is at play here. What fig variety is it? Did it ever ripen some fruit? Some figs require the infamous fig-wasp for caprification and ripening of breba, main crop or both. Others may just complain because of lack of ideal environmental conditions, e.g., lack/excess of water, wrong soil PH level or nutrients.

When adding blown-in insulation to the attic space (under the roof), one should consider installing spacers along the perimenter where the rafters rest on the headers. The purpose of these spacers is to keep the insulation from touching the roof boards and to insure a vent space along the eaves. When my house was built (1976), the blown insulation installers piled the insulation to the specfied depth, did not install spaers, but pulled the insulation away whereever ti threatened to touch the roof. If I were to add insulation, I would specify the spacers and then the installers have more freedom to pile the insulation thick along the outer edges. After additional insulation, the next best payback is reducing wind leakage. If I ever re-side my house, wind proofing and extra external insulation will be ordered. In a 2-storey house, one place the wind sneaks in is at the joist space for the second storey floor. Sometimes, the header is not fully closed, particularily where the outside wall has a jog in or out. The wind can enter and blow between the upper floor and the loser ceiling. I had one of these that would freeze water pipes when the wind was in the right direction. (Had to cut a hole in the wall to patch this leak.) When its light outside, cover the basement windows and turn out all the basement lights. And then, carefully look along the top edge of the basement. Small openings can be spotted by looking for specs of light from the outside. Places that are sometimes missed by builders are spaces under the sills of doors that open to the outside. These spaces are easily sealed with expanding foam. Look at the sump pump outlet pipe where it goes through the wall. Often, this is nothing more than a pipe in a hole and is not sealed. Seal the outside with flexible, weather-proof, long life, caulking. In my house, the 3 largest heat loosers are two big bay windows on the front of the house and a full width, sliding patio door at the rear. The botom side of the bay window boxes did not have any insulation. It was just 5/8 inch thickness of wood between the inside and outside. I cemented foam insulation to the bottom side. The same situation exists at the top of these window boxes, but these are inacessible because these are jammed tight against the soffets. The glass is sealed, double paned glass, but that is too poor for todays needs. Switching to low-E sealed glass can reduce these loses. These bay windows have no storm window coverings. Also, the height of these windows are excessive. My best solution would be to replace these bay window units with higer effecient designs and reduce the height of the glass to about 2/3 of what they are now. Another place to reduce heat loss that is easy to do and low cost is to insulate the headers in the basement. Friction fit, fiber-glass bats work here. Use a breathing mask and protective gloves when working with fiber glass or any other fiberous bat materials.

Hi cncguy I have not yet built here in CT but the PB we will use also works closely w/ an electrician; says he's reliable and since he has experience w/ my PB, the jobs fit well together like a puzzle. Anyway, my PB quoted $1850 for electric. Our pool will be vinyl, rectangle, 18x40 and is set back and off to the side from the house due to septic. It's been entirely too warm here -- a magnet for the clash between cool and warm fronts. Power went out after I made coffee this morning; came on in time to use the microwave at lunch. It's still REALLY blowing, but I hope the worst is over.

A tall skinny tree in the conservancy behind us was uprooted and is now leaning on its neighbor tree.

I was so glad to have the electricity back that I plugged in the central vacuum to celebrate. LOL

Almost! We had a whopper of a storm this afternoon here in Cincinnati. Very windy and lots of hard rain - which we did need. I got my FindAGrave pictures done in the morning and it was very windy at the cemetery. We just had a little sun, but it's already setting. I took the doggies for a walk and it rained on us a little. They weren't happy about that, but they had to potty sometime!!

Wind is howling here - saw a tree blown across the street on my way home. We are surrounded by trees - hopefully nothing blows down on me tonight.....

Sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph here with gusts to 60 both today and again tomorrow. A few light rain showers mixed in. At least we're not getting the snow like they are in Northern Minnesota.

Hopefully Connie is not freezing or blown away, but further west heavy winds and snow--blizzard watch--that is not so much heavy snow, but wet snow and blowing sideways. Lots of cancellations and asking people not to drive unless emergency. Stay safe all of you.

OMG typoons and blizzards in the same day??? Only in ND! Pretty much sustained winds of 45mph, gusts to 50 and 60 mph. It's been howling like a banshee since last night.
I don't know how stinking much rain but am guessing at least an inch, that was before it turned to snow! And yep coming down sideways!It was a whopping 33 degrees most of the day. Urghhhhhhh. Don't ask me how much snow we are going to get, first I heard 4 to 5 inches and now I am hearing 10 inches possible. We are in the blizzard warning, 100% chance of snow tonight & tomorrow.
I was SO enjoying the past few weeks of Indian Summer! I didn't want this slap in the face we are getting now! Can't winter come gradually??????

My power is now out and has been for 2.5 hours. Called to report the outage and it's supposed to be back up in about another 90 mins. Thank goodness for the iPhone or I'd be going stir crazy just sitting here listening to the wind.

You can keep that solid precipitation up your way, don't want it in Nebraska yet... But by this time last year we had already had 2 whopper storms and this year the grass is still green and things are growing. I am so not ready for winter, each year I get more and more ready to move somewhere warmer. So if you decide to fly south for the winter, stop by in Nebraska and pick me up, I'll drive!!

Wind blew all day. Not too bad at my place, Picked up an armload of dead limbs that came down and checked my roof - still have all my shingles. south of here in Racine, a tornado struck and part of the roof of the Case IH plant was torn away. Newspaper headline: Case Closed.

A power line was downed and knocked out the power along a shopping mal - all traffic lights were out, but traffic handled this in stride - no different than an outage in a winter storm. I wanted to go to a fast food joint after my medical appointment, but the power was out and those were closed. Had to vacate to another location to get something to eat.

I wanted to cut a large dead limb off a tree in my front yard, but the wind was blowing too hard for ladder work. The old, mature tree was shaking.

Was mild temp (50s) all day until 2pm and then it began to drop. Expecting near freezing tonight. Bad camping weather! Occassional wind driven mist in the air sometimes with open sky above - weird.

My heating requirements go up and down with the wind, Today, it was up.

we're in se mi...once again we lucked out...our section of town got rain but not the real bad winds..at one point heard about 3000 were out for electrical...

we finally had sun about dinner time and it was clear, but hear gusts now and again while i'm sitting here..(1:45am) can't sleep!

It was quite windy last night but I don't think it was as bad as they had in the Twin cities. We did wake up to the grass covered with snow. Alas, guess it had to come sometime. I'm in No, Mn.

It is the pits in ND this morning!

6 to 8 inches of wet, very heavy snow on the roads. Still snowing like mad and still blowing like a banshee.Cars and semi's in the ditches every where. No paper delivery, no school, the clinic is closed here, and the frosting on the cake was when cable tv and internet went out!!!!! Can you say borrrrring? I thought I was in for a long day of watching the snow come down. I have internet thanks to a devoted cable tv employee (my DB!LOL) who drove in this stuff for many miles early this morning to fix the outage for lots of towns.
