You have two dogs who have obvious injuries. They need medical treatment. If you knew how to treat by yourself fine. If not take them to the vet. Those eyes have to be looked at and the butt wounds cleaned and possibly sutured. Waiting for an opinion wouldn't change that. Take them to the vet.

What have you done for those poor dogs thus far? How bad are the wounds? are the eyes oozing? Just because dogs can't talk to us and are far more stoic than humans doesn't mean they aren't hurting badly. Take them to the vet.

Oh Patti, that's a shame. Barb should be there soon, right? It's their dogs, and their bill, but maybe you could call your cousin in the meantime to take a look.

I smell a rat! If these dogs were aquainted and have run together in the past without a fuss, something must have happened, like someone sicced them to attack each other.

The other possibility is that all the other times these dogs were together, they were under the control of their masters, and this was the first encounter with no supervision - each dog claimed the territory as his own.

It's unusual for two 'mates' to get into a bloody battle but both breeds are known to be very aggressive.

The butt wound wouldn't worry me very much but I would clean up the eye injury first with warm salt water. If you have betadine mix it with water til it's a tea color.
My guess the wounds are superficial especially the face cuts. You'd see an alarming amount of fluid if an eye were injuried.

Then I'd clean up the butt the best I could. By the time your friend is there you'll have a clearer look at the extent of the injuries. Vet's aren't cheap and I know money is tight at your house. Tell him what happened and what you see. Perhaps he'll send you some amoxicillin tablets to grind in their food.

Okay....boy has this been a mess...

We gave them baths....no more bleeding.

I called the vet and explained everthing to him...

He said since the bleeding has stopped to bring her in tomorrow morning.

We had the pit upstairs and the dobie down here...

Barb was taking the pit outside just a few mins ago...and she went over and attacked the dobie again.

Jeff is soooo mad. That dobie is his baby.

I don't know what we are going to do...It's bad enough that she is attacking the dogs...but what if it was one of the grandkids.

We are all so upset.

I know you are upset but I also know in your heart you can't have a dog at your place viciously attacking, whether it another dog or a person.

If it were me, I would not take a chance of at attack happening again. The pit would be outside, now.
Then euthanized tomorrow. Pits seem to have problem controlling themselves; even those raised in a loving enviroment. I would also keep a close eye on the Dobie.
Although the pit got 'caught' the dobie could also have the same tendencies.

Today it's the doby; tomorrow your, Denny or a small child.

Lori is right. If the dog cannot be controlled, it is just an accident waiting to happen.

I too am sorry about this problem. Sounds like a control issue, so please don't let them be together especially around people and/or kids.
Sorry to say, the pit bull may have to be put down and please watch the doby also. Once a dog gets into a fight like this and taste blood, they can turn on anything or anyone. We had problems with neighbors German shepards and out Huskies. But we too had to watch our Husky.

Patti, I have worried about your kitty in the past but I didn't know one of the dogs was a pit bull. For your safety and the safety of your grandkids, please listen to Lori and get that pit bull put down tomorrow for sure.

I am glad the injuries seem to be superficial.

Now about the Pit. If this is as you state and she has always gotten along well with the dogs and this is a new behavior she could be ill.

I would take her and and see if their is something physically wrong with her. How old is she? Dogs get a form of canine dementia at times when they are older. They also get tumors that seldom pose symptoms until they are quite advanced. Even brain tumors which could reflect a behavior change.

Have their been any other changes in their life? New dogs coming around or someone teasing them?

Is she spayed? If not when was her last heat? False pregnancies are common and horrible for the dog and owner alike. My Rot when through one and her best bud couldn't come near her without her showing aggression for several weeks. Her behavior changed overnight. She became extremely protective of her litter of vinyl balls. When her "puppies" got older she reverted back to her old sweet self. But until then poor Orson kept his distance.

If it does turn out to be a false pregnancy you have to separate them 'til its over. Do NOT spay at this time. It will only prolong it and make it worse.

You could start with a basic check-up and go from there as finances allow. But that dog must be evaluated.

I'm not sure how old she is...we think about 7. She used to belong to Jeff's roomate...but when he moved out he left her so Jeff just kept her.

She is spayed. No new dogs around. Nothing has changed.

She has growled at her a time or two over food but never anything like this.

Only thing that is different right now is that Jeff is gone and he is the "Master"...maybe she is upset with him gone...who knows. Or she think she doesn't have to mind with him gone.

They have been together for 3 years. Since Jeff brought the dobie home as a pup.

I was thinking too you hear where peoples babies just turn and attack one day.My mother use to work with a lady that had a german shepherd,she loved that dog ,one day it too just turnedit attacked her viciously.
Then another guy I know has great danes,he was taking the one to dog training classes,It was in a mall type area.He was walking the dog to this place he got away ran down attacked a man.They had to put him down.

Patti, please be careful, both you and Denny. I had a customer in here a couple weeks ago, and his arm was bandaged from fingers to elbow. I asked what happened and he said his 2 dogs were fighting and he tried to pull them apart and got bitten very badly. I think he said he had 60-some stitches. Please be careful, both of you. I would keep them totally seperate until Jeff gets home.

Pitbulls are very popular dogs around here, even though they are now illegal to own in the city. What I learned, is that the chances they will become agressive are increased:

1. When they reach maturity at about 2-3 years
2. When there is more than one dog in the home, especially of both dogs have strong pack instincts and prey instincts
3. If a situation arises that arouses the prey instinct (a noise, movement, smell, and so on).

Of all the people I know that have pits and tell me they are babies, not a single one has a dog that is more than 5 years old. As soon as they get close to that, they get a new "baby doll" pit and the old one is put down for one reason or another. True, that observation is in a vacuum but I call 'em as I see 'em.

Patti, I hate to say it, but I think you might have to consider putting it down. We know it has a strong prey drive already from previous posts, and now this. Not to say the dobe isn't a fighter, but who was attacking who afterwards?

Okay...today....

The vet gave Denny a phone number for a Pit rescue.

The vet will not just put her to sleep.
She has her shots up to date...but they want to keep her for 15 days to make sure. That will cost a bundle. Jeff's job is just starting...he doesn't have money yet.
I could probably come up with it...but I'm hanging on to every penny I get so maybe I can soon get a car. If I gotta I gotta.

I don't know about a rescue place. I don't want someone to get ahold of her that will stick her in those illegal fights.

She's not a good candidate.

She has a plate and pins in her back leg and she has messed up her right shoulder at sometime. If you take her for a walk she will limp for days afterwards. She's fat. although I think she has lost about 20 pounds since being here. I put her on "lite" dog food.

We are keeping them all separate for right now. And they are all whinning. They are lonesome for each other. Crazy huh.

Emotionally today is a little better...Giving her away or putting her to sleep is really going to be hard.

Today Alice (the dobe) is a little stiff but she looks good.

Taisa (pitt) who is twice the size as Alice looks terrible.
Her head is a big fat ball. All swollen up and eyes swollen shut. I can't imagine little Alice did all this..

Patti, I am so sorry, I was so sad when I read your gut wrenching post yesterday. But as said, once they cannot be trusted then often the best thing for all involved is to euthanize them. Take care of your loved ones, Patti.

Patti, we had two dogs that would occasionally get into it..
But most of the time life was good...I remember one time they got into it over some meat scraps my mom was tossing at them as she cleaned off a turkey or something..My husband grabbed one (the instigator) and flung her across the table..(He didn't mean to pull her away that hard.)
She was a Brittany Spaniel..the other a Springer Spaniel..2 dogs that worked very well together when a loaded rifle and birds were present and usually shared the dog house and dog pillow.

It's not just "big bad" breeds that act out.
However, something has aggitated them..and things may never smooth out for long with them.

I too would warn to be careful. Some one (dog) is not happy with their situation and is acting out.

Anydog can get unhappy for whatever reason and act unusual.

Both breeds have a little higher tendencies for aggression.

They are probably tired of their close quarters, and you could be right..missing "daddy".

Now that they are cleaned up..I'd just watch the owies closely.

I agree with Linda. I don't think that dog can be trusted. I wouldn't want to chance it after 1 good attack on Alice, and another try at it, that was prevented. I'd hate to have someone take her and use her for bait, in the dog fighting world. That would be worse than just putting her down.

they can turn on a child just as fast and for no reason. My step daughter liked macho dogs at one time. She had two of them at one time, they got out and when she found them they had a cat they were playing tug of war with it in the owner's garage. They could have done the same with a toddler. Another time she had a German Shepard and started training him as a guard dog. Her vet could not handle it after a few weeks of training, he told her to stop the training or she would have to have him put down. I believe he would have killed my husband if we had gone in the back yard and she was not around. She finally went to small dogs.

I am in agreement with calling and finding a vet who WILL euthanize. Why risk rehoming this pit for the 3rd time? She isn't a good candidate for it.

Also I would be worried about her being anywhere near a Grandchild or Denny; or for that matter yourself.

We had a 6 year old dobie, (we got him at 8 weeks). The day I brought my second son home from the hospital he lunged and repeately tried to get him in his crib. Everytime I got near he snarled at me as well. Trust was forever gone right there. After one day of it, I had him euthanized.

If you can't trust the dog, never place it with a different family, and risk them as well. I know this probably isn't a popular opnion, just mine. Kathy

What did the vet say Patti when he saw how serious the Pits injuries seem to be? I would be very concerned as to what internal damage there might be. Not to mention the damage to her eyes. I would imagine just treating her is going to be expensive with it that bad. She must be in horrible pain. And also missing the other dog, even tho they fought.
Poor dog, she is in a very bad situation and the last kind thing you can do for her,
and for all your safety is to put the dog down.
I wouldn't trust that dog ever again, not for a second.
We sure don't want to read a note that YOU were the one she attacked.
Big hugs to you cause I know this has got to be so hard.
The last kind thing we can do for our pets is to not let them suffer.

You know I've been thinking about this. No one saw the fight start. Only the ending. How do we really know the that it wasn't the Dobie who attacked first? When you took her out later and she went for the Dobie she was already injured by him and in pain.

I have known many Pits that have lived to a ripe old age so that stuff about them turning bad at 5 years or older is BS.

That said if she is the problem she must be put down. I hate these bleeding heart vets and rescues who refuse to do the right thing by the dog. I went through this with a Bullmastiff who was "flat-eyed" (attacked without provocation) we got from a rescue. Turned out he was rehomed several times before us. The rescue wanted him back if he didn't work out for "some reason". Right We ended up having the vet put him down after 2 days. Paid the "rescue" $200 for the dog and $250 to put him down. An almost $500 dog I got to own for 2 days because those heartless idiots didn't do right by the dog and put him out of his misery.

If it turns out that she is turned into a "vicious" dog please do the right thing and love her enough to euthanize her.
