I am not crazy about tile. It's hard on the feet and legs. I also don't like cleaning the grout although you can make the grout line very small and dark so that would make it easier to clean. I do love wood. I just think it feels nice underfoot, and I think it gives a warmer overall look. Wood is pretty easy to keep clean. I just use a damp dry mop on mine. My dogs are big and have scratched my wood floors, but it doesn't bother me. One day I will have them resanded and stained.

I am not a slave to symmetry -- it's balance that we mostly respond to. I think you'll be fine with sink and stove not centered to one another, as long as their relative position (and related things, like how the dishwasher and oven doors align) makes sense functionally. Your windows are cool, and trying to force them to be symmetrical instead of following the architecture will be a pointless disaster. Also note that you're going to have this question again when it comes time to hang your lights -- easier to have something to align them with on the island (i.e., a centered sink) than to be flailing for a logic ...

I would not want wood in my entry, but we have severe winters, so we drag a lot of snow in with us for much of the year. I would also worry about scratching a wood entry floor, since we don't take our shoes off until we get indoors. Wood everywhere else, though.

What is your question? If you want furniture layout advice we need photos of the space as well as a measured sketch (graph paper is best) showing how the spaces relate.
