These are the first obligatory Texas bluebonnet pictures taken of our granddaughter, Elise who turned one on March 18. She was more interested in them than posing for pictures!

(Yes, chisue, she still has red hair, and its curling in the back! Sorry it took me so long to get back with a picture of it.)

How old is your white concrete? It is more sensitive to atmospheric moisture and is usually said to only be good for 3 months or so, then it's compressive strength dwindles. You might try the exact same methods using fresh gray cement, and see what happens. If that turns out all right, the problem might be with the age of the white Portland. But if the gray breaks too, there is something wrong elsewhere. Three parts sand shouldn't be too much. On this particular forum, I am always uneasy when someone says "pour". To make strong concrete, you need to use the least amount of water you can get away with, and if you are literally pouring it into the mold, I suspect you're using too much water, which will also reduce strength in the project. If you aren't already, reduce the water, adding it only gradually, so the mix is about the consistency of cottage cheese. If you grab a handful and squeeze it, it should hold it's shape without cracking (too dry) or dripping any water (too moist). If you're soaking, may I assume that you aren't using any type of strengthener type of additive? Usually, soaking is not recommended if you are. Also, if you're staining after only a week, you're doing it too soon. You need to cure the concrete for 28 days before you do any staining. A lot of mosses can handle a certain amount of drought when they go dormant. I have seen the same type of moss here, and we have dry summers. Currently 29 days with no rain. It will green up as soon as it gets some cooler temps and moisture. I'd put a little mud on that stump and plant Sedums. Mike

Thanks for the suggestions, Joe. I know I should just give up on the color scheme, but I loved it, and it looked so very different from all of the pink, blue and lavendar gardens around here. I have already started to plant clivias there. The problem is that they bloom so early that there is no red to clash with at that time of year. Nasturtiums may make it there, though. I'll try them this year instead of impatiens and see what happens. The other option you mentioned: different colored foliage- I have a few purply bromeliads there that I haven't killed yet. I could probably go purply and chartreuse, with the occasional red or orange flower blooming. Renee

Oh, THANK you! She's so HAPPY too! I just remembered that *I* had red hair at that age, but photos of me standing on the grass (with a little help) do not show a happy child. My face is a mask of misery. My mother said I hated the feel of the grass on my bare feet. Elise seems not to mind the 'tickles' a bit!

Thank you so much for such thoughtful, sweet comments. They are music to this grandmother's ears! She really is the happiest, easiest baby. Everything is just so delightful to her. This grandparent thing is so much more fun than I ever thought it could possibly be.
