Suggestions to replace thirsty impatiens here (2 pics)

Hi all,

I have this lovely new bed that I created specifically for screaming orange and scarlet red flowers with chartreuse foliage. It has become a nightmare planting area.

I started with a grassy path, orange and red impatiens with red hippeastrum, orange tiger lilies, orange and red canna and daylilies, and chartreuse Duranta and acorus. It looked good for one season.

Then we got Sam the dog, and no more grassy path.

Then the locust tree overhead and the duranta grew, no more sun, except for one 11- noon blazing hot hour in the summer and all winter when the tree loses its leaves.

Then it dawned on the hippeastrum that it did not like to be wet and the impatiens realized they hated to be dry. The lilies want more sun. What a mess.

Here's the spot, any ideas for screaming orange, red and/or chartreuse replacements for impatiens and daylilies?

The only thing I could think of was Heuchera 'Limelight'.

Tough spot.

I'm not sure any of these are "perfect" but each has some good qualities:

Bergenia cordifolia ÂWinterglutÂ BERGENIA

Heuchera hybrids (many) CORAL BELLS
Lobelia laxiflora angustifolia MEXICAN CARDINAL FLOWER

Phygelius CAPE FUCHSIA
Primula x polyantha ENGLISH PRIMROSE
Stylomecon heterophylla WIND POPPY
Tagetes lemmonii COPPER CANYON DAISY
Tropaeolum majus NASTURTIUM

Two other thoughts:

1) Trim the trees to allow more sun in.
2) Think white flowers and variegated plants

Thanks for the suggestions, Joe. I know I should just give up on the color scheme, but I loved it, and it looked so very different from all of the pink, blue and lavendar gardens around here.

I have already started to plant clivias there. The problem is that they bloom so early that there is no red to clash with at that time of year.

Nasturtiums may make it there, though. I'll try them this year instead of impatiens and see what happens.

The other option you mentioned: different colored foliage- I have a few purply bromeliads there that I haven't killed yet. I could probably go purply and chartreuse, with the occasional red or orange flower blooming.

my vague sense is that grafted roses may lose their graft, but selfrooted cv can't. I've seen roses grown dry. they flower in spring, then dry back. drip. streamside/watercourse plants should like drip. (grapes, brambles, bermuda grass, aesculus c., iirc oleander. poplar would like drip so much, it would soon clog your water meter :-) ) ca natives have brief history of cultivation (nursery, hort abuse and hybridization, selection), so non-watercourse natives (diplacus?) likely lack hort-flexibility of non-watercourse ancient hort plants (perhaps olive is good example?). soil. suburbs are usually clay. most aesthetically popular dry plants are native to coarser soils (or are large) Reading years ago, I decided that all major Mediterranean climates differ significantly from each other. We grow plants without their native fauna and flora. so much is different... so, nothing beats (somebody's) hands-on research :-)

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I think 6 is it and I've told DH he's outnumbered:) (well..6 until I get bored and change again!) I'll play around with the pics in the hallway as I still need to decide on what I'll be using in my home office. Les917-I also thought about placing the white mirror where the 2 bright prints are now, however, I do have 2 other decorative mirrors on the wall opposite the 6 prints so could be mirror overkill in this space.(the fireplace is opposite the 6 prints-2 mirrors placed on both sides above cabinets) kgibbins-The frames are from Pottery Barn. They're called Thin Metal Profile frames-I believe now Disc. on-line, but perhaps still available in some stores. I'm thinking of getting a few more myself... The B&W prints are done by a Photographer, Allan Manus, from Montreal. I bought them at the 'One of a Kind Show'...great show for those of you living in Toronto, Vancouver, Chicago and NY areas. (It's held 2x/yr, Spring & pre-Christmas) and features works from various Artisans and Craftspeople. I love the show...so many wonderful things. I had already removed the peonies and changed the white vase below the shelves in the hallway. I now have white twigs with glass flowers...here's the latest set-up t="Photobucket"> Thanks again:) L.

Olychick, I totally agree with you about variation and depth. That's what I was going for, even though I know I haven't achieved it yet. I love texture in decorating. I bet softening even just a few of the edges more will go a long way towards what you're saying. This is definitely a work in progress. I really wish the lighting was better. I will dig out my real camera and try to get some better shots. Thanks, rafor. I also agree with you about the sharp edge of the top of the white panel. DH suggested dental moulding, but I don't like that idea. I'm more inclined to put up a thin, one- or two-inch shelf with shells and stuff up there as I describe in my OP to funk up the top of it...haha...love that!

I started writing a response to you in the Caesarstone Dreamy Marfil~ new and beautiful but then decided that it should have its own thread. Hopefully others will also offer replacement suggestions for your Blue Pearl counters. We briefly considered pairing Bianco Romano with Blue Pearl but only because we love Blue Pearl. Both are gorgeous stones on their own but not so much together, IMO. Have you considered a charcoal-colored granite or quartz? We're pairing leathered Steel Gray (aka Silver Pearl) granite with leathered Bianco Romano; the Steel Gray granite compliments the blue-gray veining of Bianco Romano and because it's a "quiet" stone, it lets Bianco Romano be the star, as it should be. Here's an image of our 2 stones with tile choices. It was taken at the stone yard so the lighting is a bit flat. I also looked at Caesarstone Pietra Gray but since it's a warm gray, it didn't work as well with our other color choices but check it against your counters since each slab of BR is unique. Some of the soft gray quartzes may also work. I also think BR would look good with stainless steel counters. SS is often paired with Carrara marble and BR is considered a good granite sub for marble. how about fibrous begonias instead of impatiens. They seem to like it much drier.
Crocosmia has screaming orange color. 'Emily Mckenzie' is my favorite.
Just an annual (at least here), but the Sweet potato vine ('Margarita') is definitely screaming chartreuse. Also coleus comes in wonderful chartreuse-y colors, as well as orange
Sedum makanoi 'Ogon' works well in shade. Also 'angelina' and 'lime coral' and take little water.
Liriope 'Sunproof', Hakonechloa 'All Gold', Acorus 'Ogon' might be other considerations
and that Geranium 'Vancover Centennial' definitely!

Just came in from the garden and I thought of another....

Salvia 'Golden Delicious', dwarf pineapple sage with chartreuse leaves and bright red flowers. Mine is in partial shade and looks great right now!

Wow, Wanda! What a list! I have the Acorus 'Ogon' there now. As a matter of fact, I have it all over the place I love it so much. I should consider putting bigger drifts of it in that bed.
You certainly know my taste- I just looked up Geranium Vancouver Centennial and it's the same one I have in a pot just five feet from that bed. I love that thing. I don't know why I never thought of putting more in.
To finish it off, your Salvia 'Golden Delicious" recommendation will fit perfectly with the orange from the geranium. DONE! Thank you, thank you.

I'll post photos when it's all in.
