Roses love compost Susierose. If you're able to compost your veggie refuse from the kitchen, you can ammend the soil around each rose easily (and free). They love banana peelings placed around them too. Coffee grounds, banana peels, egg shells, cabbage cores, etc makes gardening gold. Within 6 months you can have beautiful compost. I have had great success with the mini roses from the floral dept at the grocery store, as well as mail order. I have one red mini rose in an old coal hod that blooms 3 or 4 times a year that hubby bought at BiLo Grocery. But critters like to eat it, and I have to remember to spray it with Neem Oil. So far it seems to be the safest and best for me. Being in a container on my deck makes that job easier also. I'm no expert of roses for sure, but you mentioned cost, and yes, that's exactly why I was telling you about some of the beautiful roses I've bought down in my back yard garden. They will start putting on wonderfully in the spring, and before I can get the blooms open, something always starts munching them back to just a thorny vine. And if I don't hike down there and spray them every few days, I will only get s bunch of vines instead of roses & foilage :-( If I had of known 10 years ago the health problems I have now, or that I was going to have 2 grandkids, I wouldn't have bought this hilly property, or this little bungelow that has 2 sets of steep stairs, but thank you for your compliments, it's nothing fancy. Instead I would have gotten a sprawling rancher and a flat piece of land! My health problems aren't life threating, just hard to get around, poly arthritis (5 joints or more), and fibromyalgia. Now I know the reason I've had to live on ibuprofen for the past several years! Duh! lol. Been going to aqua therapy 3 times a week. I love being almost weightless in the water, I can move without so much pain. OK, I'll shuddit, and wish you all a great Sunday~ tenderlee

LOL Next time say 'hi' and that will help you not feel so stalker-ish...maybe. Ok, so here's a small list of the other adenium groups I'm in. Hello my dear friend! You owe me a visit:-0) and soon:-) Now, I can tell you that a Bearrs lime is one of the easiest to grow in out area indoors. In fact, if it is not in bloom, or growing profusely, even in winter, it is either in fruit or the leaves smell good! I don't know about the taste, since I don't eat most citrus, but it sounds good. Patty gave you a few GREAT tasting ones and in fact, the Kishu is to die for, but very expensive. I would also say it is a challenging one if you are just starting the citrus bug. I found that other than the Bearrs Lime, any other lime, except the Kaffir of course was hard to please unless you can provide perfect growing conditions. The Orange Trees of all sorts is one of the easiest and always guaranteed to give you fruit and good growth. They can take a lot of improper care and still survive. The Cara Cara in particular, scrumpteous and I am with Patty and John on this one. The Washington Navel is also a close second. Now I have a feeling what you are going to be looking for..lol Hopefully we will chat soon. You must of had a good summer vacation. Can you believe it's back to the books again? Good to see you again Rebecca;-) Mike

Melissa, I do watch my hummers mostly from inside, at the kitchen window while I'm cooking or cleaning up.I have two feeders that I can see from there. I have one window feeder and one on a large shepherds hook that has a hummer on it (what else??) We have had more hot humid weather than usual this summer, but I've been trying to sit on the patio a bit more so I can watch the hummers better! I am noticing they are using some of the flowers, and boy are they fast at that! They are actually using flowers that are not ones I've heard attract them. My husband made me a very large hummer garden this year...it is about 5 feet wide and runs almost the length of our "typical" ranch house. I really couldn't even afford to fill it and I didn't know what to try. I have a bit of everything and we don't even know where some of the flowers came from! We have two (taller than my 6'4" husband) sunflower plants that we did not plant...and I saw them use them this morning! I also have some regular salvia (can't even find any Black and Blue) that is a medium blue but the flowers are tiny, and also my red geraniums. THey seem to like both of those. I bought about 4 plants that were flowering at the time (and spent too much for them)and the hummers never even looked at them...now the flowers are gone and the plants not doing well. I'm definitely not a great gardener =( My red morning glory plant (I got the seeds from Helena on the forum) has tons of leaves and vines but no flowers. My husband even cut it back as it was so huge, and the Japenese beetles were eating the heck out of it. I hope my garden will be better next year, and I maybe will order some plants from somewhere...I really want a Black and Blue. Now that I've rambled on and on where did you get the cute little hummer by your name in your posts?? Hope your cyprus vine blooms soon. Verna
