Hello! Just wanted to let Cheryl,Darlene(Chickie 1),Sharon, and Jayne know that I have received my beautiful batik and black birthday blocks. My birthday isn't until next week but I couldn't wait. I LOVE them!!! Thank you! Judy

Of course you couldn't wait! And there's no reason you should have! You know we're going to want a picture of all those beauties.

Something I might recommend is to put the name of the block-maker on a seamline on the back of the block if they didn't sign it. Makes it much easier to remember who it's from...at least it does for me. @:)

Sharon - are we suppose to sign the blocks??? How do we do that? Please share.

Judy, your block is going to the post office today. Your block was my inspiration for the BOM I'm doing w/the BA Kate organized. I needed your completed block to find the "perfect black" for the background I needed - it should have been mailed immediately after I finished it, but it has been out shopping with me :). I hope you like it.

Sherry, I don't think anyone has mentioned Lobelia. It is a low plant that reseeds itself, about the height of Alyssum. The particular variety we had when I lived in the California Central Valley is a very dark, intense, blue with bronze/green leaves. It's great in a pot with something else, as it will trail over the side, and its color just sets off colors next to it, especially apricots, creamy yellows, etc., but actually lots of other colors as well. It's best (IMHO) as a companion, because just on its own it's low, and the flowers are small, although there are a lot of them. You might like to look at it in a nursery - it also comes in a lighter blue and a pink, but neither of those two did for me what the dark blue did. I don't know how it would do in Florida, but it did fine for me in Merced. Now that I'm in Sacramento, I'm going to plant some in a few pots that I can place among my roses in their bigger pots. I think anything bigger would overpower my potted roses, which are still pretty small. By the way, Mlle. Jeanne Philippe is finally hitting her stride (I remember that we both bought that at the same time, although I think something happened to yours). I use a spray that is called Lime-sulphur. I buy it from our Farmer's Co-op (and the brand I have now is Bionide). It's a product used by orchards, as well, so that might help you search for it in larger than pint size. Mine has dormant strength dilution of one cup LS per gallon of water. Judy, Mid to late Feb may be too late for you. Start watching in late December. There is a point where the buds start to swell and you'd have about a week to react. The LS dormant strength needs to be applied by someone wearing a serious respirator AND goggles AND old clothes. The LS doesn't wash off the rose canes and you don't want to spray it onto the side of your house. It stinks of sulphur=rotten eggs. As for when to prune: you can take dead canes off anytime. And for some of the thornier roses, cutting the dead canes out is easier to do when you are armed with heavy clothes protecting your arms.

Thank you for the song and all the good birthday vibes! Apparently the word was put out that I'm at DD's here in Indiana as I, surprisingly, received cards here today. Those girls are soooooo sneaky (taught by the best....heh heh heh). DH thinks he cracked a rib....he'll be ok and 16 yo DGD is staying with him this week-end so she'll be keeping an eye on him and keep him in line. Hi, Eileen and others - Within the US, I would suggest 7 - 10 days before the birthday just in case the mail is a little slow. Maybe allow up to 3 weeks for those being sent outside the US. It probably won't take that long, but that would get it there in time for the person's birthday. Now, I was in an "early bird" group this year, so you may run later than what I am saying ... and we all know sometimes something comes up and you just can't get it out exactly when you planned. It's great to get it there before the person's birthday, but if not - at least aim for her birthday month. If your questions was more in terms of how early is too early, I think most people would be happy to start celebrating 2-3 weeks early. I will be following up by sending another e-mail to everyone with the list of your group members blocks, etc. I have been sending out updates as they come along, but I would like everyone to have the current list with the updates in place and all and we got the lists out early so they may have been misplaced. Just wanted to comment on the issue of signing the blocks. I would recommend that you do not sign them unless the birthday person asks you to do that. I have been in this swap for 2 years prior to being hostess and we have not been signing them. Something permanent to the block should be at the option of the recipient and if the birthday person wants to, he or she can write it on the seam line at a later time. Just my 2 cents worth...

ok....I won't sign them anymore.....I usually put it on the seam allowance where the fabric is doubled.

Please do not think you did the wrong thing by signing the blocks! The question simply had not come up before. (The hostess learns a lot the first year of being hostess! LOL)
Also, I think your technique of signing them on the seam allownace is a WONDERFUL one. We may hear from someone in the groups who will like to have them signed like that or who will want to add the names that way after they receive their blocks. I guess my problem is I couldn't write that small to keep them a quarter inch in height. LOL

Gwen, I see you, too, are cold. On the weather last evening they said this was the longest period of consecutive very cold nights that we have had in 25 years! If it's this cold in the south, I can imagine how cold everyone else is!

Judy - mailed your block today. The postmaster was happy with me - sent to 2 provinces in Canada, several US states and an envelope to Australia. Hopefully the pony express will get it to you soon. If it's not right, please let me know. I selected a block I thought would show off the fabric well, and after it was made, I realized it was only a 10" block. I hope the solution I came up with was okay with you.

Good Morning Patchwork Pines! Thank you very much Jeanne- cute graphic! Just wanted to update the group about the wonderful birthday blocks I have received since my last post.
