Good update on my dog, I think...

Well, the vet advised me to give Tosha pain medication last night while I was waiting for her blood results. Once the pain medication started to work, she seemed to be back to normal. She started running around outside like a happy, crazy nut! Then the vet called, and he said all the tests came out fine, except that the liver enzymes were a little high. He's hard to understand, but I think he said it was supposed to be around "95", but it was "124"? At any rate, he said that wouldn't be the cause of her symptoms.

So he says that he thinks that maybe she has a little sprain of some sort, that has been causing her pain. I don't know why it would have started to make her worse in the last couple of days, unless the pain could wear her down? I'm supposed to give her the pain meds only two more days and then stop. I'm worried that she really has arthritis, or something like that.

For now, it's really nice to see her happy and lively. I'm still not taking her for a walk so she can heal, if she does have a sprain or something. But I just love my two little dogs, and I worry about them a lot.

The wild rose is probably Rosa multiflora and most often the blooms are white, although there's a naturally happening light pink sport that shows up every so often. (Rosa caninda, the dog rose, has larger pink blooms and can be a more elegant rose, holding itself up in a vase shape.) Can you talk your husband into bushhogging this weekend? IF your temperatures are not yet in the 70s, burn them (with proper permits). Thanks for your replies everyone. That is great that you got to have Casey around for over 2 years, Nancy. Tso has truly been a family pet. When Tso was about 10 months old, he was given to my oldest son by a friend. She gave him to my son because his original owners were being mean to him. I think they just did not know how to deal with a Shar pei. They do tend to have attitudes, but to us that is part of the appeal. Then in 2006, my oldest son moved to Thailand. So my youngest son took his apartment and General Tso. When both boys lived with Tso we would watch him when they would go out of town. In August of 2007, Tso came to stay with us while my son went away for a weekend and basically never left, (my idea) lol. When we first took him to our current vet, I told him this story. He said at least you claim him. Some people still refer to them as their son or daughter's pet. I told him, I claim him, pay for him & am the one who mostly takes care of him but if he could speak he would tell you that he belongs to my daughter & she is the queen in his world, lol. So when the time comes he will be missed greatly by everyone. My son is already telling me I will have to get another puppy so that Smokey (our other dog, 5yrs) will have company. I am not so sure about that, but you never know. He is really doing very well this week. He is drinking just fine but isn't too interested in the dry food. The last time he had an ear infection he did the same thing. My thinking is that it hurts his ears to crunch the dry food. So I am putting some dry food in the bowl with a little bit of water to soften it. Then I add some canned food to that. He really likes it and gobbles it down. I am just keeping an eye on him and will do what I can to make him comfortable if he has a bad day. I will keep everyone posted on any changes. Once again, thank you.

I was just reading this thread, and noted someone suggested an electric fence rather than a chain. I'd like to agree with the electric fence... but sometimes even if they've been trained to stay inside, some times something will call them to go out. My sister in law lost her dog that way. He'd been let out to do his business, but something must have attracted him enough to bounce past that fence. He went missing. My brother found him a day later, hit by the train that runs nearby. That dog was an amazing dog - also a pit bull mix. I'm wondering if a run would be a good solution, give the dog a chance to move around more without getting into a situation like the wonderful one I just wrote about. (That dog had been indoors about 95% of the time.)

Our dog Spot would do this, but he wasn't very good at it. We would hear the cat starting to scratch on something, and say "Spot, get the cat" and he would take off running and barking, but sometimes in his exuberance to do what he was normally prohibited from doing, he'd run in the wrong direction. For instance if the cat was scratching on the rug in the dining room, and we would say "Spot, get the cat" , Spot would just as likely run into the kitchen or even the bedroom, barking like crazy.

Even if it turns out to be arthiritis, thats OK, it could have been worse. Glad she had a good day. Hopefully she just sprained something. I think the blood tests have ruled out anything real bad!!

Yeah! Good to hear positive news. I hope she continues to do well. These furry little beasts sure put us through a lot don't they....but oh so worth it.

Excellent news! Try to keep her from overdoing it, though, as the pain meds will mask the pain before whatever is hurt has time to heal.

Also, certain pain meds are bad for their liver, so don't be surprised if they want to recheck her blood occasionally, should she be put on a regular pain med. We have a dog on Tramadol now, but she's been on others that caused elevations and had to be switched around some.

Happy to hear there's improvement...they have some vitamins that are good for arthritis...just put it in their water, but I can't remember the name of it.

Hope your precious one stays on the mend!

Does she like to lie on warm spots? A heating pad or electric blanket perhaps? What I'm thinking is if she's like some animals (cats especially), they'll curl up on a nice warm spot and snooze a lot. Might help keep he off her feet while she heals and the heat can help relax the muscles too.

Glad to hear the positive news. Hope it continues.

Susan! Do you use Pine Sol or Lysol on your floors or clean with either? It raises liver enzymes! I don't have time right now, but if you Google it, you'll find articles on it.

Just got home a while ago. The vet called again today and said that he wants to test Tosha's liver enzymes again in 3 weeks, and then if her levels are still high, then he will put her on a tonic for a month.

Haley... I answered your new post to me. That was sweet of you to do that!
