Pls help me start upgrade/remodel (pics)

Hi All,

I am meeting the KD at the showroom on Monday and would like to have some thoughts together to stay more focused in looking at all the choices.

We are removing one wall from our 10yr old kitchen along with an overall update/upgrade. The perimeter cabinets must stay, but the removal of the wall will mean we can have a much larger island so I can remove the large table currently blocking my triple sliding door and narrowing out a main walkway from the kitchen to the rest of the house.

I haven't done much looking yet, but I know Ubatuba looks nice with my maple cabinets. Not sure if I should do a different stone on what will be a very large island. More importantly for tomorrow, what cabinet profile/finish for the island would best compliment/contrast the cabinets I already have? I am going for a fresh, clean, timeless look and with the Ubatuba probably going in, I was thinking the island cabinets should be creamy white, but others have mentioned black or a very dark wood.

Any and all thoughts you have would be appreciated, but especially looking for island cabinet thoughts. I know we are going the following:

Removing wall to widen 5 feet and new bigger island

New countertops

New chairs/stools for island

New stainless refrig

Beverage frig

New triple sliding or french doors

Change/soften paint color for less contrast w/green fam room

I can't have this kitchen b/c not changing perimeter cabinets, but linked below is my inspiration look.

This is the powder room and the line of cabinets behind it that will be moved about 5 feet back with elimination of too small laundry room.

It seems if you like that sunny, light kitchen, you'd want to stay with a light island...especially since it will be large and a main focal point, likely setting the tone for the room.

You have a good starting place with the kitchen you have...Nice looking cabinets and a good layout in which the larger island won't create a big barrier situation in your work area. Do you have a layout/floor plan you can show us of the new and improved kitchen? Your plans sound exciting and your inspiration kitchen is lovely and so pleasant. I'm eager to see how it turns out.

With your lovely maple cabinets, you could go light or dark with your island. Your inspiration photo would make me go with a lighter island. Bluekitchenobsessed has maple perimeter cabinets and a cream/white island. You should take a look at her photos.

The pink spots are botrytis, a fungal infection. The purplish spots are cercospora, another fungal infection. Many red roses are best in afternoon shade to keep from crisping, but most likley they are suffering a bit from botrytis also, but you don't experience the symptoms the same as you do on white roses. There really isn't an organic preventative that works on botrytis well at all. Sulpher does help some with cercopsora, but not greatly. It will burn the foliage like the dickens in hot weather too.

lucycakes - here's the link to the Costco product. I read everything they had - the installation instructions, specs, etc, and it sounds like an excellent product. Costcos heat mat weedy - Thanks for the post. I read your posts and looked at your pictures and I was very impressed. I'm not sure if I ever posted comments or not; I think (hope) so, because you bath turned out beautifully. If mine turns out to be almost as good I'll be very happy.

To answer both questions. 1. We are keeping the existing cabinets. To the left of the wall oven WAS a cooktop. We took that cabinet portion out (haven't finished it when these pics were taken). Above that is where the ventilation was. The only other reasonable spot I can move the range to is the other side of the L, and I don't have alot of counter space and would lose 2 bottom cabinets there if I went that route plus the upper cabinets are all framed in one section and wouldn't fit on the wall where the cooktop was previously! 2. I could take the wall oven section out entirely. We have another lower cabinet (actually came out of the bathroom, but is the same height and depth) but then the fridge sits directly to this cabinet's right and I again would lose that huge amount of storage where the wall oven was (has two double doors above and below) and our fridge is just stainless front, and I would hate to see the black sides. 3. We have built a surround for the fridge and removed those two tiny cabinets that are not functional, and replaced it with shelves above. So my options are: 1. Remove the entire wall oven and replace with just a lower cab, no upper cab, with fridge surround to the left. 2. Re-utilize the wall oven by cutting it down half way where the oven was and use it as an upper cab but shorten the depth of the upper one. (will still be 4 inches more in depth) 3. Leave it the way it is 4.Recess the upper portion of this wall oven so the lower still protrudes, but the upper portion is only sitting out from where the range goes, about 2 inches (I will be using the old wall oven space for plates, etc and that upper cabinet portion ends up with lost cereal boxes!) I'm just torn!

Thanks all. Yes, Karen, that's the light fixture. It's 16" x 6" but I couldn't seem to downsize it to attach. Do you just hate the fixture or the whole idea of chrome with this combination? The cabinet pulls, knobs, and faucet are fairly unobtrusive but still chrome. My3dogs: Here's the cabinet style but painted not stained like this. 60" double vanity, doors on the sides with three drawers in the middle. Oval sinks in white with 2 frame less 24x36 rectangular mirrors over each. I couldn't find a picture that matched. Ck, it's the Kelvingrove Cambria and I haven't seen it used very much although I think it's pretty too. What do you think of this light fixture instead? Still chrome but more industrial style with smoked glass. More in line with the countertop and cabinets? I don't really like Edison bulbs for the bath but maybe with another bulb? Or am I still off base?

chachasea-Sorry to be a pain, but do you know where to find pics of bluekitchenobsessed's kitchen? I did a search that wasn't helpful, and didn't see the name on the finished kitchen list. I was thinking creamy white island to keep thing light, but on the FK, I wasn't seeing ANY that mixed a lightish maple with a creamy white cabinet so I was worried there was a reason for that!

rhome-thanks for the encouragement. I hope to post the hand drawn sketch I made for the KD but I can't get the scanner to work...thinking about just trying to take a picture of the paper! I would love for you guys to take a look.
