I have only done one which was not with scraps but it is my understanding that as long as the center is the same the others done matter. I believe I have seen them done with scraps. It should be interesting so long as they weren't too far out. Jayne

Deanna, I think I'd keep the values the same for the corners with the squares that get cut maybe a little darker along with the center being constant...but, what do I know....bright is bright and teens love it!

Well I have one block done and I just love it.!!!! I put yellow in the center and will use different yellows and one with a print. I am using different blues and blue prints for the other blocks and will alternate them between the corners and the others. Most of the blocks will have a lighter shade of blue. I have quite a few star prints and they should look nice. I have blocks cut for 15 squares and should end up being 3 across and 5 down. It was so much fun to arrange the one block in all the different ways. I hope I like it as much after all the blocks are done. I went out and bought a half a yard of yellow and a half yard of a light blue print so my only new investment will be the fabric. I will worry about the borders when that happens.!! TaTa for now. Bedtime.

I did a very scrappy one w/out keeping the center the same. I even had to piece some of the original 9 patch blocks together to attain the correct size to start. I really like this design in scrappy!

Your yellows should look nice in this & w/ varying blues should be great -- this pattern looks terrific in bright scrappies -- very lively & upbeat! I bet you'll like the results.

You can see the quilt I'm describing, if you go to the Photo Gallery next door to here & look for my post entitled "Bigger Pix Further Attempts" which includes another quilt too.

But it shows the 9-4 in full, in close up & a close up of the back in turquoises; unfortunately the full shot of the back has disappeared from there.

I love this pattern & I find it GREAT FUN! I'm working on 2nd one now, also very scrappy on front & one larger block of it in very different fabrics on the back -- such fun!!!

thanks for the photos. What size were your blocks?? I made each little block 5 inches because I wanted to use up scraps but I wondered how large you could go without having these huge blocks of color???

I mde a D9P with my neutral scraps, totally scrappy, and it is wonderful. I did the same using batik scraps and it too is very pretty. Also, you don't need to put them together with the small squares touching which gives even more of a random look. So I think anything goes. I don't know how to include pictures on this post... sorry.

I seem unable to post a fresh new thread. This is a work in progress D9P, but not scraps.

It's pieced but not quilted yet. Also need to decide the binding colors.

This is the back side, unrelated fabrics, same D9P design in different scale & different fabrics. I really like how the back came out better than the front.

I just need to decide on this side's binding, either mocha like the stripe or dark brown.

Apologies & pls. disregard the quilts & fabrics showing underneath each of these shots, I see it's distracting, I'm just too excited w/ my brand new camera!

I was unfamiliar with the concept of a D9P. I really like it both as planned colors and construction and as scraps. Seems perfectly suited to the crumb concept if you ask me. Thanks for sharing that!

I also love your neutral quilt, gmaquilts. Love the batiks too. I am certifiably CRAZY about the look of batiks and love working with them. The neutrals are really especially lovely together, tho.

I just saw an Alex Anderson book on neutral quilts. For the most part, the patterns she worked were less interesting to me than the neutrals she used. Mostly, it's just interesting seeing yours within 48 hours of seeing the book.

I just bought a bunch of plaids but I will have to think about doing something with neutrals too. ;>
