Do you have to keep the ledge? It's always going to look like you covered up a window. Do you have cabinets on either side of the sink (top cabs)? How about some shelves on both sides and maybe tile (Painted with a scenery) in the middle. You could make this wall a focal point.

Even though that window is no longer available to let in light you may want to think about installing interior traditional or plantation style shutters?

If you leave the louvers closed it'll just look like a normal window with nice shutters installed.

So many options, the tough part is choosing which one to go with. :-)

I'd go back and opt for the passthrough. To me the only thing worse than doing dishes would be doing dishes in a dungeon -- or feeling like you were. I wouldn't want to look at a wall. I'd rather look out at the people, or the furnishings, or across to a window.

I have to tell you that when I'd just read your title, my first thought was, "Well, sober up and you'll find it again." ;)

I'm not sure why you have to leave the ledge...I "lost" a window (ok let's be frank...I've lost a few over time but found them again the next morning) but one I did "lose" permanently is in our master. We had to let one in a bank of three go so we drywalled over it. The framing all came out though so you'd never know it's there unless you go nuts with a hammer and a drill....(ouch)

I'd do a fake window if the framing has to stay...but if it goes, then I'd work on the whole wall to make the feeling better for the "washer". I'm working on this problem in our rental right now. I need to set the sink against a wall. I hate that. Right now I'm battling with the option of raising the cabinet up a bit, and adding undercab lighting to that cabinet and perhaps a nice mirror or painting. Probably something like this...

I would have kept the window there if you didn't want a pass-through, so that you would have a view and extra light in that area of the kitchen. Any chance you can get a non-working window framed in there now?

If you can't reclaim the window, I would keep the ledge, put a mirror there and then frame it in like a multi-paned window. It would bounce light in that area, and you could even add window treatments on it, etc.

There is a trim piece of wood over the "window" that connects the cabinets on the left and right. I am thinking of taking out the window frame, so it doesnt look like I ever had a window there, and putting 2 small pendent lights under the top piece of trim, and mebey a picture or mirror on the wall above the sink. I dont want a pass thru because the window is over where the sofa will have to sit and its off center also. The window was a small sliding one and a plate wouldnt pass thru it if I had kept it. I could have kept it to see thru to the sun room but I opted to remove it in order for the wall above the sofa to look good. I guess I did sound like I was tipsy saying I lost my window. How funny! Its a good thing to laugh at oneself!!!! Thanks for all the help and ideas.

Sooo... put a small stained glass window in there -- you'll get light and beauty. On the couch side hang a couple of sconces or better put up sconces on dimmer switches -- sexy.

I can't stand feeling hemmed in... I really love the openness of windows -- even teensy weensy windows are better than no windows.

I had interior shutters on both sides of a sunroom window for the same reason. No one ever noticed there wasn't a window there anymore. Stained glass sounds like another good option...

Paying someone to make your window go away, that's a different matter, and I've never done it. Now I'm wondering if there isn't some kind of periscope thingy we could install where we want windows. There should be something like that. Perhaps that's our first $ million? Sounds like a market for Bill Gates. Hmmmm....

I put a very pretty clock in the space a window would be behind my sink since I have an interior townhouse unit. I love the clock I chose that really adds to the kitchen I feel. I wish I had more windows since I love a lot of light.

In my new kit we have no over the sink window. I had a stepped back cabinet for glasses put in. I believe my other uppers are 14 inches and that one is 10.

Put a stained glass piece in the opening...adds some color and light.

I think Igloochic's solution is a great one. Can you get extra cabinets with glass to put over the sink? It will also give you additional storage.

How about a decorative window that lets light in but doesn't open. I couldn't stand to stare at a blank wall when doing dishes.

I have to say the idea of a mirror to me would be horrid. The last thing I want to see when washing dishes is myself! Small mirror tiles would be okay, as long as they distorted the view. If there is not going to be a window there, I would prefer a nice landscape that I could look at to help transport my thoughts away from the job of doing dishes.

How about hanging a landscape behind a window frame?

I hung a piece I found at Michaels for $10 to help disguise the fact that the light switch was no longer centered over the sink.
