Anyone here living in the Great Basin?
Comments (51)Hello everyone, I am a Great Basin cottage gardener in Salt Lake City, new to GardenWeb. Enjoyed reading these posts and thought I would encourage those in the SLC area to visit the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District Demonstration Gardens (83rd S. and 1300 W.). They have a number of types of gardens and turf alternatives that are geared to our high desert area, that vary in amount of water needed and "look". They have a plant list for every garden area and the gardens are gorgeous. Gives you some great ideas for planting things that are likely to succeed and keep your watering needs low. They also will come to your home--for FREE--and test your existing sprinkling system and tell you how to adjust your watering times and locations to provide adequate coverage and not waste water. I don't work there but I have been there several different times and it is a great place. So GB-er's check it out. And BTW, I am gauralady because it is such a great plant and I love the way it blooms so long and moves so beautifully in a summer breeze....See MoreHigh cost of gardening in CO
Comments (25)Hi, and welcome to the Inter-Mountain West. For trees you may want to check out Fossil Creek Nursery on Route 287, just as you approach the south suburbs of Fort Collins. From now through April they have bare root trees for sale at a price much reduced from containterized or balled and burlaped trees. Dig your planting hole, put a mound of soil in the center and spread the roots of the bare root tree (or other plant) over the mound and backfill the hole. Do no soil amendment other than adding about 1/3rd volume of compost to the soil you removed when digging the hole. After backfilling use the remainder of the soil/compost mix to form a saucer around the edge of the hole to direct irrigation water around the newly forming root system Stake the tree against the wind for at least the first season while new roots are forming. If you're interested (as a new gardener in Colorado), I'm giving two talks at the Boulder Co. Fairgrounds in Longmont on the next two Tuesday evenings (7 PM). The talk next Tuesday is on Ornamental Vines for Colorado Front Range Gardens and the following week it is on Ornamental Grasses. The talks are being given as a benefit fundraiser for the Longs Peak Barbershop Chorus so the $10/class fee is paid directly to the Chorus, not to me. There are posters in various garden centers around town (Flower Bin G.C. for instance) giving the details....See MoreIkea Kitchen with high end appliances
Comments (47)@jdesign_gw Thanks for the reply. We might not be talking about the same cabinet. This is what we have, but it's meant to work with Ikea integrated fridge (which is a sliding hinge). I am trying to find if anyone has modified one to fit a Miele fixed hinge (door on door). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiaSXa6GoZ4...See MoreFebruary 2020 Building a Home
Comments (109)@cd7733 I can totally relate to decision fatigue. There are so many decisions to make. When I was buying lights I called Lighting New York with a price question. The lady who answered was so nice and ended up giving me a pretty substantial discount. @shead Congratulations! I remember when you posted the pictures of the damage. It must have been devastating, but now you can look forward to getting back on track. @Lou Myers Thanks! One good thing about our former builder was that he hired an excellent trim crew. I was going to wait until all of the floor is down to post a picture, but what the heck... Pardon the trash and dust. I'd estimate we are about 40% complete. Unfortunately even when the inside is complete in less than two weeks, we can't get a certificate of occupancy without the yard being graded and the landscape installed. The ground may not be dry enough for another month or two....See Morejohn_hyatt
