Congratulations!! I'm sure it's only $30 dollars for the 3 weeks. That sounds so exciting and to think that you will have hands-on individual instruction...wow that is just a great deal!!

I guess I'm going to have to get off my butt and do the same thing. I'm self taught and in the beginning that was perfect for me, but now I need a class or two to sharpen my skills and of course learn new ones!!

Oh! How excited you must be! I used to teach a beginning quilting class and believe me, when you are learning something new, smaller class size is better. You should gain a lot of one-on-one attention which will be invaluable.

Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions! You'd be surprised at the kinds of things people will ask in a class. Just know that your instructor does NOT expect you to know everything; that's why you are taking a class, right? To learn something (and perhaps many things) new? Even what seems like a stupid question to you is not stupid if it helps you to understand how to accomplish something or why it's done a certain way.

I would also recommend you pay a little visit to the shop between now and your class. Explain that you just signed up for this class and you want to make sure you bring whatever is necessary. They may recommend you bring along some fabrics (or they may want to sell you more! Always a plus for the shop) to work with, and they should be able to give you some kind of handout that will assist you in packing just the right items to take with you.

It's great that you've found a place to learn this skill. Good luck, have fun, and show us some progress!

My best advice is to be sure your sewing machine is working well, needle has been changed, bring neutral color sewing thread, bobbins, and scissors --- just in case.

Around here they list one cost price of the classes combined, but your area may be different. Nice to have a small class, you can learn and understand the little tricks they share much better.

Thanks for sharing in my excitement. Both of my machines are working perfectly. I was thinking about bringing my own shears just in case. And extra needles in case I break one, though I bet they sell them there. Thanks for the tips, Babara.

Now, do I bring the metal straight stitch machine, or the plastic computerized one? I'm thinking the newer one so I don't throw my back out carrying it in from the car!

I'm so glad you found a class! Can you believe, I've never been to Cornerstone Quilt Shop?!?!? I didn't even know where it was until I looked up the address. It must be right across Colonial from Home Depot, right? Now I've got one more place in town to check out.

I bet it's $30 for the whole class, but don't know for sure. I agree that you should bring neutral thread, bobbin and scissors. I always travel with a couple extra needles too, along with a small pin cushion with the skinny, long pins I like.

Ask how many hours the class is. If it is 3 - 1 hour classes, I would say it is for all 3 classes. If the classes are 2+ hour classes, I would say the price is probably $30.00 per class. This is based on my experience in my area (which is a high priced area).

Good advice already given. I would like to also add - Do not be late. Get there early so you can set up and make sure your machine is stitching properly and you are in your seat and ready when the class begins. Also bring your 1/4" presser foot. Before the class, practice sewing straight, 1/4" seams precisely. Use / stitch thru graph paper to measure 1/4" accurately if necessary. Only use 100% cotton to practice.

You will have fun and learn alot! And probably have homework :)

I am glad you found a class that fits your schedule. If you like the shop, ask if they offer discounts for supplies that you buy from them for the classes. And support the shop to keep them in business, so you will have a place to keep taking classes.

that is so exciting. In our area, the $30 would be for all three. I started quilting by taking a class for a table runner. You learn the basics and enough confidence to try something else after the class and you'll do fine. You'll also know a place to go back to for questions.

Don't forget a cushie for the tushie! Cushions come in handy if the class is long or you just need a little height.

Thanks again for the advice. I e-mailed the teacher and asked what kind of thread to bring. She said just cotton thread is fine, but we have to pick the color based on the materials I choose. She said they are having a sale on Friday so I should go then and buy the fabric to save some money. I may, but I get off at 11 the night before and usually don't get to bed until 3 AM, so it's not likely I'll be awake in time to make a 30 minute drive each way and still be home in time to get ready for work at 2:30.

Kate, I don't know where it is on Colonial (I'm closer to Disney and don't spend much time in that area). If you don't go first, I'll let you know if it's by the Home Depot or not. You may want to go on Friday and see what kind of sale they are having. I'm glad that you now know about a new quilt shop that you didn't before!

So far, communication with the teacher has been pleasant and helpful so that's a good sign. I would almost rather a bigger class so I can meet more people interested in the same thing, but I know the individual attention will be more beneficial.

You've gotten a lot of good advice here, if I could toss just one more tip your way. You mentioned that you have a choice of 2 sewing machines. I'd use which ever one has a 1/4" foot, or if neither does, find out which one you can get one for (some machines are easier than others when it comes to that). I always suggest students use the same machine in class that they plan to use at home, if at all possible (providing you have homework). That way, all seam allowances will be consistent and blocks will fit together much easier.
And if you have one, bring your sewing machine owners manual along.
