A good man.....my father

My dad died peacefully this morning at 10:15 am with his family and caregivers by his bedside. He was 89 in 2011 and lived a very full and blessed life up until the last three years when failing health meant he had to reside in the Memory Care center at the retirement community where he and my mom are living. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather was Charlie Clark. And the first great grandchild was born, a little boy, January 6, 2012, little Leonardo, born in Brazil.

I'm so sorry, Teresa. You knew this was coming but it's always so sad. I know you'll miss him and my thoughts are with you, your Mom and the boys.

I would suspect rats. They have a habit of chewing seedling, especiall corn, melons, sunflowers, peas, beans. This happened to me last year. I was suspecting rabbits. So I make a rebbit trap. But what I catching were rats. I let them loose in the beginning; I was saying to myself "I don't want to catch rats but rabbits" haha. I kep sprinkling my garden with rabbit repelents, salt/pepper but something didn't give a damn and kept on chewing off my seedlings.This was not definitly a squirrel habit. Squirrel dig up the seeds(corn, peanut..) but do not eat or chew greens. After some internet search, I found out that it was the rat not the rabbit. From then on I went after the rats. Rabbits generally eat the top of the plants, if they can reach it. But rats chew off stems. leaving the top behind. I know this, because I almost eradicated the rats last yar and this year I have some rabbits eating the top of carrots. With the peas on trelis, since they cannot reach the tops, they eat those laying on the ground and the lower part of the rest. So I think, If your father lives in a rural area, with wooded area nearby, then it is most likly that rats are the culprits. Best thing is to get a Mouser cat that can go after rats. It has to be a big cat, rats are much bigger than mouse. The other options are placing all kinds of traps and baits. But be aware of the birds and cats not to eat the poison baits and get caught in the traps. For further information, google rats in the garden. I am sure you will find a lot of information. Naaa, Phil--I have them 'collected' in a file I copy from! :o) Funny--they are all 'timeless' in wisdom of those who were present at the birth of our nation! There is so much prattle trying to pass as wisdom today, that I had to find something of dignity and substance to reflect upon, so I began 'collecting' quotes! Just because you wrote a book on the subject, doesn't make it your claim to fame. While Ed Eby may not have written any books on the subject, they are the true founders of sansevieria as for collecting them. You can look up so many of the Koko, EB, Alva, and so many codes that were in existence before Grigsby or Hermione came upon this. Hermione has never collected much of the plant materials that she gives herself credit for. Many of these plants were in the hands of these collectors well before Hermione ever knew about them. I think the rest of you need to bush up on your history lessons as you don't really have facts, just CONCLUSIONS from what you have read. Juan Chahinian is the first person who actively grouped, and collected the laurentii group and documented this. Before this it was just word of mouth of what was what. You don't see any Grigsby's codes or numbers in any of these collectors, because they originated from Hawai'i and codes and numbers changed after coming into the hands of other collectors. Ed Eby had the largest collection of sansevierias amassed into one collection. His plants originated from Africa and before that, not in any collection worldwide. Just because something has been named, documented and labeled doesn't automatically make them being grown in botanical gardens. Back then you had to be a rare flower or some rare plant to be named after for a botanic garden to house it in its limited space conservatory. Get your facts straight, not everything was in botanic gardens even back when it was described. get real!

Well I was going to have a pot roast and a new recipe, a Banana Cream Pie from a site I just found last night. It looks fabulous. BUUUTTT, as I just started heating the oven to stick the roast in, and was crunching the graham crackers for the pie, I heard a loud POP noise, and looked at the oven and saw it glowing red and sparks flying on the inside. Opened it up, and my element at the bottom of my oven was bright red and sparking, ready to catch fire. So we grilled out and had BBQ chicken, macaroni salad, garden salad, and green beans. My heart goes out to you and yours. When a loved one passes on it leaved a void filled with memories. I am so happy you are left with happy ones. Your father sounds as though he was blessed.

It is so hard to let them go. I hope for myself and mine that we are able to be as active as long as your father was.

Alzheimers runs in our family and my aunt suffered for over 10 years. Very sad!
