A good man.....my father

My dad died peacefully this morning at 10:15 am with his family and caregivers by his bedside. He was 89 in 2011 and lived a very full and blessed life up until the last three years when failing health meant he had to reside in the Memory Care center at the retirement community where he and my mom are living. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather was Charlie Clark. And the first great grandchild was born, a little boy, January 6, 2012, little Leonardo, born in Brazil.

I'm so sorry, Teresa. You knew this was coming but it's always so sad. I know you'll miss him and my thoughts are with you, your Mom and the boys.

I would suspect rats. They have a habit of chewing seedling, especiall corn, melons, sunflowers, peas, beans. This happened to me last year. I was suspecting rabbits. So I make a rebbit trap. But what I catching were rats. I let them loose in the beginning; I was saying to myself "I don't want to catch rats but rabbits" haha. I kep sprinkling my garden with rabbit repelents, salt/pepper but something didn't give a damn and kept on chewing off my seedlings.This was not definitly a squirrel habit. Squirrel dig up the seeds(corn, peanut..) but do not eat or chew greens. After some internet search, I found out that it was the rat not the rabbit. From then on I went after the rats. Rabbits generally eat the top of the plants, if they can reach it. But rats chew off stems. leaving the top behind. I know this, because I almost eradicated the rats last yar and this year I have some rabbits eating the top of carrots. With the peas on trelis, since they cannot reach the tops, they eat those laying on the ground and the lower part of the rest. So I think, If your father lives in a rural area, with wooded area nearby, then it is most likly that rats are the culprits. Best thing is to get a Mouser cat that can go after rats. It has to be a big cat, rats are much bigger than mouse. The other options are placing all kinds of traps and baits. But be aware of the birds and cats not to eat the poison baits and get caught in the traps. For further information, google rats in the garden. I am sure you will find a lot of information. You might have seen a pair of hens escorting their poults. They (and quail) often do the army-style platoon with one adult at point and the other one at tail gunner. Or a male that didn't know how to read his rule book. :) West of here, the pattern is to see hen and poults in a family flock, and then as the poults get larger (and the hens less protective) a couple of hens will join up, with maybe a male or two, into a foraging flock with the poults. They LIKE being in flocks, and if the food is plentiful, can be in flocks of 20+ birds.

A Letter From My Father

Don't you just love this?? After my parents passed I found a box of letters and tapes that my mom and her 2 sisters wrote to each other over the years. Some of these letter are as old as 60 years old when my sisters were babies. The things they wrote about are so funny. Someday I am going to scan them all and send them to my brothers and sisters, then put them on cd's for safe keeping. Times were so different back then and I have so much fun reading about the family and getting a feel for what it was like back then. The cassettes I found are in more recent years when cassettes were the thing to use....they all used to tape to each other instead of writing and I am so glad they did...so nice to hear their voices too! Treasures for sure!

My heart goes out to you and yours. When a loved one passes on it leaved a void filled with memories. I am so happy you are left with happy ones. Your father sounds as though he was blessed.

Teresa, I am sorry for your loss. It sounds like your father had a blessed life. My father also turned 89 last May, and I thank the Lord every day for letting me have him here for so long...and for as long as his health is good. My condolences to your whole family. Hugs!

It is so hard to let them go. I hope for myself and mine that we are able to be as active as long as your father was.

Alzheimers runs in our family and my aunt suffered for over 10 years. Very sad!
