Male Turkeys: Good Fathers?

User

Everything I've read about turkeys says that the males do not take part of the rearing of the brood.

However, I am puzzled by something I've seen.

Twice now, I have had a family of turkeys, hen, 5 chicks and a tom, walk across the road while hiking near my place. Same place, both times, two weeks apart.

The female is first in line, followed by the chicks, then the tom brings up the rear.

So, are male turkeys actually part of the rearing process but bird "experts" simply don't realize it?

I'd like to know if anyone else has seen this. I've seen pics on here of a tom sitting on eggs, so that has me thinking....
